Grammar Discussions

It's really a bit of fun mixed with a vent. I reckon we are all learning and we've mostly all shared our own Achilles heel here. And joked at grammatical mistakes in our own and others' posts. (Not sure if that ' is in the right place.)

It is, as long as you mean others, plural, as opposed to just one other.

Repeatedly so I see.

I'm bowing out. I, with poor grammar, will leave those with even poorer grammar to complain about others with poor grammar. ;)

...and medhead you are alway right so I agree with whatever it is you have to say. :)

Oh gee, I'm so evil for having an opinion. Perhaps the thought police would like to tell me about my other failures. At least I can blame The mad peanut farmer for my poor grammar.

Do you mean it is fun as long as it's a plural others or are you saying what I posted is grammatically correct. :D

Two much whine. ;)

Even i've used Pyjama grammar on this thread, granted I'm usually in daggy home clothes on AFF anyhow. I keep my suit and tie for my professional work :P

Do you see a lot of the SMS speak disappearing due to autocorrect and Swype? I don't need the shortcuts any more (anymore is another one!) as I have Swype which is faster on my keyboard than any abbreviation.

[deliberate error]Or is that the worse idea so far?[/deliberate error]

Let's move this thread slightly OT so we can leave each other alone...I find enunciation errors as frustrating as written spelling and grammar errors.

Pet peeve's include the "Ostralian Alympic Team". i hear it all the time from supposedly educated news presenters.

No need to panic.

I think of Grammar as being a bit like clothes. Most of the time you can wear t-shirts and jeans, be comfortable, be yourself and most people will still know who you are. But, sometimes you need to impress or be a bit more formal and that's when you dress up.

Just like in the FLounge?

That would be Ostrayan.

The Queen of Soul may disagree....

On pronunciation (which isn't quite the topic) who is annoyed by:

'vunnerable'?

There's an 'L' in there isn't there? How can people miss it? I'm looking at you Bill Shorten.
It's not silent like the T in 'often' (although half the population seems to like to pronounce that T.)

I won't comment on that as I am from the Adelaidiwws. (translated: Adelaide Hills)

Yes I have no ability to comment. my pronunciation is screwed. Never really taught phonics at school. Born in south east Queensland with family from there, best childhood friends were Victorians, moved to Cairns at age 12 and now living in Adelaide. I've had no long term standard of pronunciation. My children laugh at the way I speak all the time.

Vunnerable is the go-to word these days. I am sick to death of hearing it. Whichever way it is pronounced.

I've never heard you give a speech, but having met you in person, you seem perfectly understandable.

My children laugh at [-]the way I speak[/-] what I say all the time.

Fixed.

Children laugh, adults just run away. :p

*runs* Just kidding...

Some of the recent comments remind me of hearing about an area of study called Socio Linguistics. Where I grew up we said, 'mis cheeevius', and as an adult I had to train myself out of that to learn mischievous. An interesting example is the Irish who tend to say they are going to see a fillum and some of that was transferred to Aus. That's as I understand it. Do we have a socio Linguistics person available? :)
