Grammar Discussions

Not exactly grammar, but consider the pronunciation of these two words - phone, tic.

Now join the words - phonetic. When joined the pronunciation is completely different, you dont say phone-tick.

Kids used to trick each other similarly with "mac" and "hine".

Talking of pronunciation, I just heard the FM News 24 radio announcer talking about the 'furry' strike in SYD. :D I'm sure those w' possums scampering across their roofs will be very pleased.

That would be a NZ accent. They think they are pronouncing it correctly.

I spotted this one in a convict era cemetery at Richmond (NSW) yesterday. Don't let anyone tell you poor spelling is a new thing.

The headstone could refer to the perpetrator of the crime - a barber (as in Sweeney Todd)?

It was not until last week that I was helped into a new spelling for a word. That word used was yesTURDay. If yesterday was no good for you I do hope today works out so much better.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Well, I'll be! I think I have never known the difference between these. Thanks!

That said, I use 'stationary' a lot more than the other one, so I've probably just been lucky.... used correctly, of course (stationary meaning still or not moving).

I guess 'stationery' would be more common if you're into office supplies or if you're a petty cashier.
An easy way to sort it - stationery - remember it's "er"as in paper; stationary - it's "ar" as in car (because cars move or stay still)
Bought and brought - bought as in buy; brought as in bring

My sister in law was a primary teacher way back when, and used to say children should know their times tables and the list of what she called 'demon' words by heart by grade 4 or 5, or they'd be sunk.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

This thread is pure entertainment, thanks for the laughs! Here's a little gem I see often: rod iron. "Rod iron table and chairs for sale."

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Or "wrot" iron! Another I saw was on a ute advertising a house underpinning firm - called "House ReBloking". Conjured up an interesting mental pic!
