Grammar Discussions

My accountant used to smile ruefully at how many people turned up with records to claim their stationary. ;)
Being a lazy person, I'm overjoyed to hear that my stationary work can be claimed as a tax deduction. Now if they would just reinstate "entertainment" I could wine and dine for lunch and follow that up with a siesta and the whole lot would be deductable. Finally, a job I'd be good at!

Had an email from my old high school last week, informing me "Schools back tomorrow."
Hmmm, little wonder grammar and spelling are in the toilet, if the schools that are teaching them can't even get it right!!

Ok who has a penpal in the USA?

Damon's first letter was in the most beautiful running writing, red pen on yellow paper. I was surprised at how literate he was - and how normal. His apostrophes were all over the place, though. Later, after we'd been writing for a while, I offered him grammar lessons. Damon said something along the lines of "Thanks, but I don't really care about apostrophes." That's one of the things I love about Damon: he's very upfront.

I have a death row pen pal

I'm sure there are heaps of old teachers around with a store of little sayings to help remember all those confusing 'sounds the same, spelt differently' words. I recall one - stationEry = papEr; stationAry = cAr. I did used to know others but me grammar button's busted!

Saw a sign today "Pedestrians Crossing A Head"!

(a very good reason to wear a hard hat)

Saw this last night. Couldn't believe my eyes - was I seeing double?

Just make sure I'm not going mad... there is a difference between all of the following three sentences, right?
  • I spoke to you about February's rent.
  • I had spoken to you about February's rent.
  • I have spoken to you about February's rent.

I've learned things about grammatical and linguistic structures and semantics through learning French for a few months that I never did in 12 years of Australian schooling. Unbelievable.

You are not going mad.

I am scratching my head to come up with the linguistic distinction, though. I will think on it.
