Hmm. Article in 'The Age' this week on the Tasmanian Devil says that the Thaylicine 'went extinct'. I assume there's no such thing as a sub-editor any more....

Sub editors "went extinct" when online classifieds simultaneously killed two revenue streams - paper sales and the so called "rivers of gold" classified ads themselves.

Simply means 'lawful'.

A Tasmanian company by any chance? Home of the largest lawful opium poppy-growing industry in the world (40% of world production).
 
Thanks JohnM for the input. I had thought poppies were grown in many countries where the country name finishes in "an".
Yes they are in Tassie, Northern Territory and southern Europe.

I tried to get my head around the underlined text to come up with a meaning but failed.

For the sake of my sanity I had to look it up - Mercury is 58 million km from the sun and Earth is 150 million.
