Re: The totally off-topic thread

Oh, I see what you are thinking there. You are thinking of a tug-'o-war, but of-course that is not what I meant or indeed wrote. My mob on the end of the sisal rope are "towing" the party line...something done from only one end.

But each of the two groups think they have the ONLY valid end...

Happy wandering

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Not sure if this should be in this tread or TOT.

So, the options are :-

a. This is not an error but the truth of the Liberal Party;
b. The result of the new Google management of the ABC;
c. Work exchange experience title writer;
d. Just the usual bad proof reading of the ABC titles.

Or all of the above.

Plain English is new priority for UK government...

Latin abbreviations like etc eg ie are to be removed from all government websites

So etc will need to be replaced by and so on or and others (or similar).

eg will need to be replaced by for example.

ie will need to be replaced by that is.

I suppose that's a minor change in a way. It's not as if that is going to be the new standard all over the English speaking world.

Of course, they can't be seriously banning all Latin abbreviations, for example: am/pm.

I'd like to see us go back to the old short form of et cetera: "&c."

On pronunciation I've noticed that the traditional way of saying "St." as in St George, St Kilda, St Vincent's und so weiter which is 'snt', has been replaced by 'saynt' which sounds dreadful to me.

Yours, &c.

The Olympics brings out the pedant in many of us I'm sure. ("Looks like they could medal here..." "Maybe the could podium...")

The next time I hear a commentator say "The Aussies swum a great race" I don't know what I'll do. They might as well say 'swimmed'.
