Hand luggage - seriously taking the piss

Over the years I have seen odd carry on and the open abuse of carry on limits. In the QP today I saw this little chestnut. I am not a luggage expert but my guess this about 55-65 litres in size, it looks about the same size as the samsonite or muji spinners I have.

It also looks like it already been expanded and I am supprised it can fit through the X-ray machine.

meh. In LOTFAP you see people bringing on cricket bag sized hand luggage. Everythingis bigger and better in the EWW ESSSS of AAAAA

And the airline did what to stop it? Even the pre-boarding announcements now say "if you have two pieces of hand carry, put the larger one in the overhead and the smaller under the seat in front."

The last time I flew QF (2 weeks ago) the door dragon scanned my phone, gave me my paper boarding pass after looking at it, said good morning Mr eric2011 your seat is 1A, looked at my 2 pieces of carry on, tied a special label onto the smaller piece and said that only 1 piece up top and the other under the seat in front of me.

Sarcastic hat on now....when she completes her training she will know that in row 1 there is no seat in front of me

Love those people trying to board with an oversize 'carry on' bag exclaiming how taking onboard the last flight was no problem when they haven't even bothered to remove the thermal bag tag (paper tag) meaning that it was checked baggage.

Quite right mate. If you do the surveys after the flight I would drop that one in.

That doesn't look as big as many Ive seen..(no person for scale admittedly)... but the title is correct...some folks seriously do take the pi55 with hand luggage. I'm just back from a Europe trip and had a max legal size carry on.... and it was smaller than many others ......

+1 often wonders why I'm keen to board. It's because too often inconsiderate pax take up all the overhead with baggage that clearly should be checked.

I am mostly bemused when people who know they have a carry-on case that needs to go into an overhead locker (aka, won't fit under the seat in front of them) on a busy Gold Triangle flight during peak hour Friday evening board last minute and are surprised to find there's no room for them to put their bag above them at their seat. C'mon people... plan ahead would you.

SBF I just noticed there was a typo (now edited in my above post). It should've said thermal tag (not terminal) which is the paper tag people have on their checked luggage when they aren't using a Qtag.

Many people still have legitimate carry on sized bags with their spare Qtag on just in case they need to check it for any reason.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek - when those Q-Tags were made available, I remember discussion around here about people displaying them. But agreed - I always take off the thermal tags as soon as possible, for all sorts of reasons.

Let's not forget people who get on with large cabin bags and then need help to put it In the overhead bin because it's too large or to heavy or both. Amazing.

Well I'm slightly miffed! My 3" high Asaron mudman was broken by an idiot who was trying to force his too bloody big wheelie into an overhead!

In his defence, his bag was somewhat obstructed by someone else's 2m+ assortment of bows, arrows and spears at the back of the bin (all hand luggage mind you ... no risk in that assortment, but I assume ISAS is not as yet, a genuine interest in GKA - POM sectors) but his arrogant demonstration of unbridled force manifested before I had a chance to leap from my seat and berate him for his self indulgent ignorance. Too late, I'm afraid, the damage was done. The only upside (if in fact it is an upside) is that my K12, de-legged mudman was refused entry into AU upon declaration, so all was lost regardless.

I am totally pi**ed off by those who think their oversized baggage is reason to shove and force others correctly sized HLO though. At the time, I did think seriously about inflicting similar on that arrogant little twerp who broke Mr Mudman's leg!

My carry on is ridiculously small by most standards. I'm always happy to check stuff in. But yes, the Septics have always loaded up with ridiculously enormous amounts of carry on. Why? So they can get to their car/taxi/rental a few minutes quicker and get to a restaurant before they die of starvation. Not.

It's mainly because most airlines charge for checked bags unless you are an elite.

When I flew Southwest BNA/LAX I checked in 2 pieces free which can be up to 23 kg each.

As it's open seating, they board in zones A, B & C. I did OLCI at T-24 and was assigned sequence B08 but I notice that even when the group C's came on there was still plenty of overhead locker space for their carry on.

I always fly Southwest in USofA. Cheap but reasonable airline.
