Airbus rethinks the aircraft cabin with 'Airspace' - Australian Business Traveller

Bloomberg said:
Q: On overhead bin shortages, what can be done with that issue? In the U.S., bin space is typically allotted based on the order by which you board.

A: You see our latest aircraft innovation, like the 350. The 350 has our biggest bin by volume in the market and they don't have any problems with finding a space for your luggage. We applied that now to the A330neo as we launched the Airspace cabin with it. And one of the biggest innovations in that cabin was to increase bin volume by 66 percent. I would say a relaxed travel starts with easy boarding and stowing your luggage. And if you are afraid of not having enough space for your bag, you know, that's not a good start for a nice flight experience.

Q: Where did you find the real estate?

A: Actually, there in the 330 we have applied one idea that we grow the bin. It's definitely bigger, but we lift the luggage position instead of lying in there flat, moving it upwards.

Q: Do you use more of the ceiling space?

A: We use a little bit [more] ceiling but we also use a little bit of aisle space in the wide body [and] we lowered the bin about one inch. We have other ideas in order to get the bin situation better. For instance, what you find a lot still in overhead bins is flashlights, blankets, pillows, emergency equipment. And all that is taking away space from the passengers. And especially you find that stuff in the first rows of premium seating for passengers. So we launched some initiatives, together with airlines, to find alternative places for these elements.

Plus other Q&A about seating, seat width, transparent cabins, etc.

Flying last year from Tehran to Baku on an Embraer there was a very large gentleman opposite me whose carry on was a garbage bag of popcorn.

Haha! Wouldn't you love to know what was going through his head that morning?

*mental checklist*
- passport
- wallet
- camera
- garbage bag full of popcorn
"Yep, all set."

What I neglected to mention was that he was the largest man i have ever seen (which kind of made the whole thing rather sad). He needed both seats and it was a very tight squeeze, the flight attendants tried to give him seatbelt extenders but it just didn't work. So, he flew wedged into the seats as opposed to strapped in.

I recall a domestic 767 service that was delayed because someone tried to force the overhead closed, and broke it.

The solution is just to ban all bags with wheels!

A tyre (car) from Bogota to Havanna also on an Embraer but wasn't worried about overhead space, there were only 4 of us on the plane and Mrs Nick and I were up front. Still don't understand how he was allowed to carry on board though.

Watched a pax exit the CBR VA chairman's lounge equivalent (name?) and happened to walk behind her all the way onboard (no priority boarding in CBR). Pax places her enormous carry-on in the overhead, filling almost an entire J-class bin. What caught my eye was the "QF Club" bag tags dangling from the bag.

There's loyalty, thanks for access to your exclusive club VA, now let me advertise for the competition.

I think they should be making overhead spaces smaller......

Put every passenger into self contained pods with a maximum weight per pod, whatever fits in there is yours to carry on board. Stack the pods like giant Jenga blocks and load onto plane. No delays, no space arguments, no seat recline issues, no priority boarding issues..its a win-win solution for everyone...

Was on a Virgin flight from Brisbane to Melbourne where they announced that cabin baggage would be checked and weighed. Which they did and consigned about a dozen bags to the hold. Bravo.

I also like WN, and i actually find them better than AA, et al. I also like their FF programme and just so easy to use the points. And importantly very transparent when you want to use them.
