Phoned up and tried to book a JASA, the operator knew exactly what I wanted and called it a "marginal" award, yet instead of being priced 36,000 for an itinerary it came out as 52,000 points. The operator said they must have recently changed it, and now it costs extra points, thought it should only be 36,000 points herself.

Operator mentioned there was no way I could reduce the points any further, only reduce the co-pay by increasing the points.

Is this explained anywhere?

From where to where and did you check the spreadsheet of successful ASA Bookings?

Check out post 1

Cheers

JASA CNS-BNE-ADL-MEL should be 36,000 right? Where'd they get 52,000 from?
I looked at the spreadsheet but that itinerary wasn't there.

Totally depressing.

Which post 1? I clicked on that link and post #347 came up.

That's priced as 36,000 for CNS-BNE-ADL (which is a valid route: CNS-SYD/MEL/BNE-ADL) and 16,000 for ADL-MEL. CNS-MEL is only valid via BNE or SYD (CNS-BNE/SYD-MEL).

Thanks! Where in the rule book is that rule explained??
It is specific to mASAs?
If you price an itinerary as a Classic Award online, it definitely comes out at 36,000 points.

Right. Got it. 1000 forum posts later, indirect route. Happy days.

it's been mentioned before the these mASA must follow regular fare routing rules or they will be charged as separate components, just like a normal fare

The rules can be found using a tool like ExpertFlyer... only ~$100 per annum, but a very useful tool. And yes, as you discovered, indirect routes which don't have a routing rule mean more points.

The joy of AFF. Well done for persevering with the reading.

Yep. Bit of a shame they couldn't just give me the reason on the mASA line, instead when I asked the reason given was that they must have increased the price recently.

One of my family members booked a MASA in J for so many points I did not think it could be possible. Last night I cancelled him out of the flight between Sydney and Perth and the saving was more than 140,000 points to have him come home in Classic instead but still in J.

If it was that much more than classic, then it wasn't a mASA, but just a regular ASA

Lucky I saw it and only because I was checking to see he picked up status credits on his flight to Sydney that I had booked for him. He is now back on a Classic J for 36,000 points and he is getting the 178,000 odd points back.
No harm done after all.

You let other family members try and book them :o

I rang Q and was quoted 270,930 point for tsv - bne - mel -adl -bne -tsv in J for 2 pax, online classic is 144k + $368 odd for fees/taxes/etc, paying $500 as a co payment to the 270k would bring it to around 200k odd, is this suitable value/amounts or have I gotten the lingo and request wrong?
