Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Booked a SYD-WLG JASA last night and was having a chat with the CSR. She was of the view that they'll not be keeping these around for longer....was well on top of the fact that I was doing this for the SC's.

Took about 15 minutes as she had not done one for a while and had to check how to do them.
Looks like they may have already been briefed ahead of the announcement today :o

I Can't understand why they would want to remove them...

  1. They make a lot of money off points in the first place, so removal of any sort of redemption will affect this revenue stream to some degree.
  2. When booking a JASA/MASA/xASA or whatever you want to call them, there is also a significant payment of Cash required...more revenue.
  3. These types of bookings are more lucrative for Qantas than the basic vanilla classic version (excluding the points & SC earn)
  4. The points earn is trivial when compared with other "easy" points such as 10 point per $ voucher promotions.
  5. The SC earn, while significant has a good effect on "customer retention / loyalty" so can also be seen as a positive to the bottom line.
  6. People that are using these types of bookings for status, don't really fly enough anyway to clog up the usual high tier status perks.

I'm pretty sure that they know if these fares are removed then there will be some effect to pax flying habits, not easily measured but I'm thinking they dont want to take the risk.

If they were going to go...they'd be gone already...
Obviously QF didn't share your thoughts, shintaro10x :(

QF call centre will go into overdrive tonight in order to beat the Fri 28th March deadline.

I missed the significance of "the Fri 28th March deadline". What is it that I've missed?

From the FAQ Page ( Frequent Flyer - Program - Fairer Flying FAQs)

Q: What if I've already booked?
A: If you have flights already booked (booked and ticketed on or before Fri 28 Mar 14) for travel on/after 1 July 2014, you will earn the Qantas Points and Status credits that applied at the time you made your booking. The applicable Qantas Points will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer Account approximately four weeks after the dates of the flight(s) taken.

For members with a booking made prior to 27 March 2014 in a fare class impacted by these changes for travel on or after 1 July 2014, we will automatically credit your account within a month of flying with the Qantas Points that applied when you made your booking.

that is what it says

your link no longer goes anywhere!!

Can anyone tell me what masa is and how it works? Or where do I find out about it? Is this used for Status runs? Excuse my ignorance

Yes I know that they are knocking it on the head. Is it a short cut for people to gain platinum?

two answers

1) see first answer

2) RTT..read the threads. Sorry to be blunt but EVERYTHING you want to know about MASAs can be found on this site

Is it a short cut for people to gain platinum status

Whatever! a simple yes or no would have sufficed, thanks for the help

It was a way for people to get status credits and points when redeeming points for rewards flights was known mainly as any seat awards. It was used by some to reach higher status levels and to help maintain a level if just short

Shortcut, no. Much cheaper way, yes. However it is dead as of midnight tomorrow.

Thommo, maybe it's like you've walked in on a grieving family and asked what was so special about the deceased. OK, that's overstating it, but... it is like having your cake and eating it too, a loophole that allows you to earn points on an award ticket at classic reward (or better!) rates. Fuller detail around the threads.

Others, no, I think we have until 30 Jun to book.... Red Roo says:
[ see the thread called "[h=2]Heads up about program changes[/h]"
(Thommo, witness the subsequent flurry and sense the emotion!)

I agree there's a conflict in the FAQs that is ambiguous, specifically in red:

Q: When do these changes take effect?
A: The changes are effective for travel on and from 1 July 2014. This means if you book on/before 28 March 2014, for travel on or after 1 July 2014 you will earn Qantas Points and Status credits in line with these new Airline Earning Tables.

No worries and lucky you :-)

WP for me was entirely work related. A redundancy put paid to any chance of retention this year. Will only be at QF's graces. Given minimal flying in the immediate future it doesn't really matter.

While the MASAs will no longer be sold from 1st July, are they worth anything for bookings made after today?
The new earning tables don't list X, U or P, so while we may be able to still book them, will they earn, and if so, in which categories?
