Have you had to change/cancel travel due to COVID-19 (involuntarily or voluntarily)?

I thought I would start a thread as a resource for AFFers who have changed or cancelled travel plans directly or indirectly due to 2019 n-CoV.
  • Did the airline/cruise company cancelling or change your flight/cruise? Or, did you proactively or reactively cancel or change it on your own (and why?).
  • Did they notify you directly, or did you discover it on your own?
  • What was your original plan, and what was the revised plan?
  • What was your experience like?
  • Did you go through any travel insurance claim process, and how was that part of it?

For the record, part of my role at work is to monitor medical related issues, filter out mis/disinformation, and brief other staff using only verified facts from trusted sources, so I am not one to buy into sensationalism or hysteria. BUT, I am also an advocate of forward planning and monitoring situations that could affect travel plans.

To start it off…. We have begun voluntarily changing (or making back up plans for) our upcoming holiday SYD-(+/- SIN)-LAX-SJO-LAX-HNL-LNY-HNL-SYD

We are booked to the USA via SIN on SQ in a few weeks (F Saver Reward Booking). A few things caused us to start making contingency plans on getting to the USA including:
  • Reading posts from Buttermilk Chicken regarding her RTW flight being disrupted between HKK and CEB
  • Member Pushka raising a good point if Singapore will be next.
  • Monitoring the World Health Organisations surveillance on n-CoV (as part of my responsibilities at work). Singapore confirmed infections were 28 on 5 Feb, 40 on 8 Feb, and 43 on 9 Feb. Several of these cases were human-to-human contact, with no recent travel to China.
  • Bloomberg’s article this morning HERE, which discussed the spread of the virus from a conference attendee in Singapore, via a resort in France, to people in France, Spain, and the UK.

We contacted SQ, to discuss the options of alternative carriers, to which there were no available flights. The agent was very friendly, and said she understood the desire to rebook and avoid an Asia transit, but she said until official bans are in place, there were no options, but “we will offer options if Singapore becomes affected by travel bans”.

We began searching other options. We contacted VFF, who found one seat on DL SYD-LAX in W, and one seat on VA in J SYD-BNE-LAX. No other business or premium reward seats (except any seat) were available +/- 1 day of our desired travel (with pre-booked hotels, cars, and other flights to South America, and Hawaii). We will keep looking for another J seat on same day, and hopefully two on the same flight to free up closer to the date.

We have left our SQ bookings as is for now, and will cancel either that booking of the DL/VA booking closer to the date as thing develop.

Overall Experience:
  • Wait times on the phone are obviously a bit longer, but I’ve not been on hold longer than 15 minutes with either VA or SQ.
  • Staff at both SQ and VA call centres have been friendly, empathetic, and helpful in searching, but have no/limited availability and flexibility in voluntary changes so far.

Hmm not so sure about that. Schools in Seoul have been closed for 2 weeks already and the government there have extended the school closure until 23/3.
Wikipedia indicates at the moment that 89% of S Korea cases are still in Daegu and neighbouring Gyeongbuk region. but that still leaves 700 odd cases elsewhere, and the intel they have will be running ahead of the test results, which have a lag associated.

Here's a map of locations of cases in Korea.

Coming home in just over a week. This has been the most fraught travel I've ever done, after the trip over went off without a hitch.
Originally booked HGA-ADD-HKG-BNE in early Dec
Cancellation 1. CX cancels direct flights HKG, BNE, rebooked as HGA-ADD-HKG-SYD-BNE
cancellation 2. ET cancels ADD-HKG, rebooked as HGA-ADD-BKK-HKG-SYD-BNE
cancellation 3. QF cancels SYD-BNE, rebooked with a longer layover in SYD
cancellation 4. ET cancels ADD-BKK, rebooked as HGA-ADD-BKK-SYD-BNE

FFS. What next? Haven't booked anything future given the endless changes, other than a desultory DSC or two. Still uncertain when I'll get home.

Cheers skip

They SHOULD say DURING an epidemic. No one cares what happens after. There'll be NO government restrictions After an epidemic. Geez.

Wikipedia might be correct but I have 2 family members who are teachers in Seoul. That is the current on the ground information.

Mike Pence tells us that they do not have enough test kits. Does Aus have enough?
Currently Australia is acting like they have enough given their testing regime. USA simply have not been testing much at all and have even refused to test a couple who are off the ship from the cruise where two people have died from it and that is currently in isolation of SF.

This is the problem with ambiguous wording. You’d think that the amount of pouring over these T&Cs that presumably their lawyers do they would actually be able to see that that’s a nonsense statement.

I've just taken a $600 x 2 hit on cancellation. Booked CX to LHR in May with my brother, whose health isn't brilliant. Just as concerned about being in a flying petri dish for 14 hours as I am about the 5 hour layover in HK, being denied entry or getting stuck somewhere in transit. England and the relos will still be there same time next year.

Could you not have just paid a change date fee?

Have a trip booked for a biennial conference being held in Providence RI, am due to depart on 17th Jun and plan on spending a week in Boston before the conference and a little over a week in NYC afterwards. The trip was booked with mother's CC as we are travelling together, but I am not covered obviously. Like most people (I would assume) I tend not to book TI until closer to departure. Personally I'm not worried about contracting the virus, but if I contract it in the USA, I will be up for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Having yet to buy TI, the risk of being that much money out of pocket is causing me concern, thus making me lean towards cancelling. This is annoying because I booked and paid for airfares in August last year before this outbreak, and feel as if there should be some way that I should be able to get medical coverage. I booked through QF. This sucks even more as I will lose my status if I cancel.

Any ideas? Would QF offer me medical cover as they know I booked well before this happened?

No.

And the USA is the most expensive place on the planet to get sick.

And why do you think that QF would offer you anything? They are the airline, not the medical insurer... :(

Just read PDS from QF Comprehensive TI, this policy is effective from 1st March, no mention of coronavirus exceptions

We were planning a DSC trip on QF to requalify for WP for BNE-MEL-SIN (1000SC) on March 20 weekend in F but have decided to cancel since it’s not possible to get insurance cover.

Such is life!

Can buy more Pinot now.:)

Oops, obviously it is outsourced to NIB, which won't issue cover. Interesting as I went to NZ 1 week ago, bought TI the day before and no mention anywhere of coronavirus .

Anyone else here planning to risk travel to the USA?

We’ve got a QF/QBE annual policy that’s good until Oct. Like you say, no mention of epidemic or pandemic, but it does have this clause...

A loss caused by, arising directly or indirectly from or in any way connected with any Government intervention, prohibition, or regulation.

That pretty much covers all their basis IMHO

We purchased our policy last year, but if you’re buying new - be careful.

We did similar. For me anyway. Figured we wouldn't be flying much overseas to enjoy the privilege. We have an annual policy with Insure and Go and they do cover for pandemics. Ours doesn't expire until January 31, 2021. I purchased it in November last year but knew we weren't travelling until February 2020 that's the date the policy cover started. Had a panic because of course they called Corona virus exceptions on 27th January 2020! But the company said it was the Purchase Date that was the reference. Phew.

A concern is the USA. Interesting article in the NYTimes on Trumps handling of it. And, yesterday Pence said they do not have enough test kits.

“Trump’s Calamitous Coronavirus Response
A whole-of-government mobilization to protect the president’s ego”.

ahhh well MrMac got into the mix and was concerned the money paid to the TA might disappear (no logical reason for that brain snap) so as she's a friend just got her to cancel the lot.

Just listened to the Vic CMO recommend travel only to NZ and Canada by Vic Schooles. Apparently he doesn't trust anyone else. He said he may go on to recommend no O/S travel at all.

He also said that a Doc had continued to practice whilst sick with the virus and now they are going to find 70 pts.
