Head to Head: Singapore Airlines Suites vs Emirates Airways First

No amenities pack was disappointing.

Oops. Just realised you were talking F. BIG difference.

Having been in Emirates F twice I cant imagine how good SQ must be to beat it.

No pjs or amenity pack in SQ J is a downer even for long long haul flights.

I think SQ F consistency and being always there even when you don't expect it. We did have a nice EK crew but more shortly.

As a background to this trip – we were eloping to Las Vegas!!! :p :) :D And what a better excuse it is than to fly up front and fly the long way around!! But a bigger reason is ‘once you step onto a plane and walk left, it’s hard, very hard, to go the other way’. You see, this forum has corrupted me!! Flying up front – proper long haul First class that is – was only a dream not so long ago, even turning right when entering a plane and seeing Business Class was like thinking “oh, I wish I was there” or “these guys are so lucky” whilst needing to walk a further 30 rows before getting to my seat – that cramped Economy Class seat. But nowadays, long haul Business Class is just so ordinary – sure it’s nice & comfortable – but being right at the front, that’s where it’s meant to be, and that’s why I am corrupted (and spoilt) – all thanks to you guys.

Congrats on your birthday and wedding!
I'm always happy to see another F travel TR :)

You wrote it very well Alanslegal, once you fly F, everything else seems very ordinary. Lucky airlines keep coming with new products to keep us flying addicts excited ;)

Haven't flown SQ F yet (will do next year) and as I can see by each and every TR I read, it's a winner product!

Will be interested to read how you compare EK F to TG F. I hope TG gives a good fight ;)

Haven't flow F anything yet :( but am hoping to one day. Maybe I shouldn't have used those million QF points doing all that Dom J travel.

...
There is more standing room than seats, so when there is turbulence and the seat belt sign comes on, the passengers either have to find a spare seat and strap in or are asked to go back to their seats.

...

I'm imagining Musical Chairs. :) Do they play music at the bar?

Congratulations on your nuptials.

Sorry that I have been a bit slack with the posting of most posts. With 2015 coming to a close, I spent the last two weeks solidly researching my 2016 holiday plans and decided that it will be the year that will involve warm weather, golden sand, and tranquil beaches. The last few days I have been consumed looking at Bora Bora - it looks like paradise - and I am glad that our flights and overwater accommodation is now booked and out of the way.

Back to this Emirates flight though, the prepared bed was comfortable although feeling a bit narrow. With the Suite doors closed automatically at the press of a button, it felt even more cramped. I did manage to get a good seven hours of sleep though and just waking up in time for my scheduled Shower Spa experience 2 hrs and 30 minutes prior to landing. Every F passengers is allowed 30 minutes usage of the Shower Spa bathroom. After the shower I had planned to shower and freshen up, and then have a leisurely light breakfast prior to landing. There are two shower attendants who exclusively manage and look after the two on-board showers. For such a long flight, I would think that their jobs must be quite boring, standing there and really doing nothing for most of the flight.

Anyway, it was my first shower on a plane so I am given a quick tour of the facilities, the shower, the sink, the spa products, where the hair dryer is and what to do if there is turbulence. The most important thing to know is that there is only five minutes of water for each guest, however you can turn the water on/off if you want to shampoo & condition their hair, or have a nice body wash and quick scrub with a loafah, before rinsing off. Oh and then the heated flooring in the bathroom too, just to make the experience a bit more enjoyable.

Here is the bathroom and the shower that I have been so wanting to experience.

The size of the bathroom is similar to those found on Thai Airways A380 First Class. Here’s a photo we took of that bathroom just for comparison.

And if anyone wants to see the candid video of my shower experience, here is a video that I took using my point and shoot camera. Sorry for hand shake and bumps – I do promise to practice using the camera better between now and my next shower flight ;)

Luckily there was no turbulence however we were told that if the seat belt sign came on or if it was too bumpy, we should cease the shower, sit down on the inside bench and hold the hand rails inside the shower and/or use the call button and an attendant would come inside to give immediate assistance.

It is definitely worth putting the shower on a plane experience on your bucket list and I am glad I got to experience it. It was totally fun and even though it was a bit gimmicky being my first time, the ability to freshen up after close to 10 hours in the sky, no doubt was very beneficial.

After the shower, it was a light breakfast before landing into Dubai. I am personally not a fan of breakfast on planes – for some reason, I have never had a good breakfast spread on any airline, in any class, including this flight – so I usually have some juice and toast and I am done.

At Dubai, First and Business class passengers have expedited immigration, and from there, you go to the dedicated Chauffeur Drive check-in lounge landside, to arrange your complimentary transfer to your hotel or home. As expected, we are driven in a new Mercedes Benz E Class saloon.

Next: Emirates Airways Dubai to Bangkok

Dubai to Bangkok | A388 | Emirates Airways First

Again, a similar looking near new black coloured Mercedes Benz arrives at the hotel entrance at our scheduled pick up time. Our driver does all the heavy lifting and our luggage is carefully placed into the boot and then we are off. Despite being a 30km drive, it is not too long before we arrive at the designated First Class departure drop off area. We are dropped off and forced to do our own thing. I was really expecting good things to happen upon arrival - maybe a porter, or a host, or someone to give us assistance from the moment we go out of the car but that didn’t happen. At the same time there are about another dozen or so cars dropping more people off so it does not feel exclusive at all – especially when comparing this to Lufthansa’s First Class Terminal which really is the best lounge experience I have ever had. The Emirates’ terminal is large and new, many check-in areas so nobody is ever left waiting but the BYO luggage to the desks, that’s a bit of a negative for such an over the top airline.
With boarding pass in hand, security checks and immigration completed – we are off to the lounge. The First Lounge occupies the entire floor of the terminal and has direct aerobridges to the planes – this is supposed to make the whole experience a little bit more comfortable.

We have a 9:30 am departure so it is breakfast time in the restaurant. There is a couple of interesting items off the a la carte menu (mushroom filled crepes) but the self-serve buffet, that didn’t really excite me and I didn’t eat anything from their either. One thing about flights and lounges – I am not a fan of breakfast time. I always enjoy breakfast when I am in Sydney though where there are so many great cafes choices and am out most weekend mornings searching them out.

Boarding commences and it’s a complete screw up. There is no dedicated boarding from the lounge to our flight today and there are no announcements either. Like our drop off, we are again forced to work out ourselves how to get to the flight. We find an elevator and a staff member directs us to the floor below us. We go to that floor and it’s completely deserted. There are no connected aerobridges or staff either, so we head to the next floor down which is where general boarding is and that’s where we board from.

This is a short flight, a bit over six hours of flight time, so I work out my game plan - lunch, one movie, shower, light dinner and then we land. The crew, again very multicultural, is not as good as my previous flight. Maybe they appeared less friendly but then maybe it’s just me today, especially after a poor boarding experience. Service appeared a bit rush and they didn’t show the finesse that the last crew did.

No pyjamas were offered on this short flight, nor was an amenity bag offered. It is available on request as I have read but it is a bit awkward asking for something that should be offered in this type of cabin class.

Food was again, anything you wanted at any time, so I ordered the caviar, chilli and coriander king prawns, grilled salmon and a dessert.

EK 10.JPG

I am not a caviar expert at all but it’s consistent to what I have had before, the king prawns were OK, and the grilled salmon was terrible. It was completely dry and overcooked, just like the grilled sirloin steak on my last flight. I sent it back and didn’t bother getting a replacement meal.

On both our Emirates flight there is ob-board wi-fi. There is a complimentary 10 megabyes per person and then after that, you can opt to buy 500 megabytes for USD$1.00 – sounds very good value but too bad the connection was often dropping out – and if you were connected, the speeds were extremely slow or no existent.

I experienced my second shower on a plane which was still very enjoyable. I skipped the next meal service - not that we had any fixed timing to eat. We landed on time and thankfully for those express immigration passes – which is expected for any first class flight – we bypassed the meandering queue of the general passengers and no doubt saved an hour of waiting, easily. There is a sign at the baggage carousel directing First and Business passengers to where the Emirates chauffeurs were waiting landside so that was easy and nobody was going to get lost. Sadly we are driven in a much older Mercedes Benz E Class saloon.

Overall, the Emirates experience started really well, with great crew, with great service especially my never ending glass of champagne – and then it got really ordinary, really quickly. Two out of two main meals were completely inedible for a start. The other foods were comparable to what is offered on other airlines (I mean, you really couldn’t stuff up a caviar course or a dessert course for example). The on-board shower was the fun part and now it’s ticked off my bucket list, I am in no rush to be flying them again.

Next up: Thai Airways, Royal First

Could not agree more re EK - IMHO lounge damn ordinary / communication to F pax re delays and gate changes non existent / trek to board totally confusing / initial service WOW but quickly went downhill / assessment of so-called Suite disappointing / Champers warm / food Coles cafeteria / bed lumpy / toilets OMG FANTASTIC / shower WOW LOVED it / on board bar fun for 30 mins but way down back - given what I paid certainly won't repeat. (Well not until next year anyway and only if these banks are still stupid enough to throw me 2 or 300K QF pts as CC sign on bonii for next to nothing in next 12mths!)

Did I mention how disgraceful the tarmac arrivals are in DXB for 777 on FRA-DXB route?

A L how did you book the EK flats? Pts? FWIW I booked EK F FRA-DXB-MEL 2 days prior to dep for 192K QF pts + A$825.

I read it's not uncommon for 777 flights to use the bus to the terminal - that's pretty cough for such a big plane. Add the heat and it's appalling.

I used QF points. Jfk-dxb was 126k + usd $730 and dxb-bkk was 75k and ~aud$500. Crazy taxes.

Ah ok - about what I thought - again to be concise IMHO if we set SQ R at a benchmark of 1 - I would rate EK F at about a .7 at 1.3 cost - does that make sense to anybody?

I think so. EK F is 70% as good as SQ R but 30% more cost?

Thanks for writing this, I have really enjoyed travelling along with and your new spouse/partner, all the best for the future.

Now seriously, did you say that there are not PJs or amenity kits on SQ in F or suites? If so, I'm going to have to re think my flights next year.;)

; )...You will love it but perhaps your credit card won't. ...happy to give you a few tips next Thursday night:)

Having tried both Emirates and SQ we are certain SQ is really good. As for CE and his work in mathematics I thought that was pretty good.
I have never been to DXB and getting on a hot bus transfer is not going to get a tick from us and we are quite happy flying over places like that. No need to land there ever until they get air conditioned air bridges for all their flights.
Great TR Alanslegal !

Yep my first visit to DXB also and no burning desire to return - I was gob smacked when I realised we were deplaning onto Tarmac - BUT - EK did have a designated full size air conditioned bus for F cabin - all 2 of us - it was a great bus with only 14 or 15 lounge chair type seats on board - great bus - but then we followed in convoy of all other buses for what seemed like an eternity - 1hr from landing until I was in the F lounge - OMG - very poor indeed!

I need all the tips to save $$$ whilst over there :D ;) :)
Better just to shut your eyes to the prices and enjoy it :). We stayed at the Four seasons on Bora Bora in an overwater bungalow and just loved it. We actually went to Taha'a as well and liked that more - not as luxurious but more Polynesian. One thing we did was pick up a couple of bottles of French Champagne at duty free and drank that on the verandah of the room, rather than always paying crazy prices for alcohol. :)
