Heads up about program changes

Please do take the time to read through the changes via qantas.com. I’ll be closely monitoring this thread and passing on feedback to the various stakeholders concerned.

Hi Red Roo. Do you have a link to the changes? Are they posted yet? I can't seem to find anything on qantas.com

I'll reserve ultimate judgement until I read the detail, though changes are hardly ever good for the customer. I'm sure everyone will have to evaluate how the changes impact decisions for choosing their frequent flyer program. Will also be a good adventure working out the quirks and hidden advantages of the new "system"... there's always some -- though Red Roo, you'll just have to turn a blind-eye to those for us... ;)

The decision has now been made to discontinue “MASAs” as they represent a short cut to tier status and add a significant cost without the revenue in return.

As someone who has benefitted from this, I see your point and knew it was coming, I just hoped I had more time :p

I certainly hope I make it to LTG before that goes, as it's going to be a harder slog to get there without them, and moving to a revenue and zone based system is probably also going to disadvantage me, despite my ~80 flights last year and ~50 already this year, as I tend to book in sales.

I do understand though, and hope I can at least earn Gold in years moving forward :p

Thanks for the heads up.

As Ewing mentioned, it was a matter of time for MASAs, and hardly surprising. TBH I am surprised that they were offered in the first place and then for so long, but that's another question for another day.

The new pts and SC earning chart will be of interest to many on this forum also. I shan't speculate, but await the official announcements.

"MASAs" will no longer be available to book after 30 Jun 2014. Travel can be after this date.

Please note, existing bookings will not be impacted.

Thanks Red Roo,

I'll reserve judgement on this particular issue.

We survived before ASAs, we'll survive after.....

QF needs to make its business decisions, I respect that.

But QF needs to respect and understand that every enhancement of the program will cause members to reevaluate their own personal circumstances and cause them to reassess their program loyalties.

Enhancements flow in both directions.

Your boss is fond of reminding us that "points aren't free".

QF should also remember that neither is our loyalty.

My initial view is the same as QF WP's..... But I'll wait and see the details .

(Please tell the captain not to interrupt tonight's entertainment).

OMG! Taking screens shots to read on my flight... but my initial reaction is.. we'll end up knowing more about this than the Customer Service Agents... good luck trying to convince them what we are eligible for on a retro claim.

What a complex joke. Is it really April 1st already?

Ps. Yes, this is the first stage of dealing with change: denial. I'll hit rock bottom soon I hope.

I gave up on MASAs after they were taken offline. I hate phones and reading about people's variable experiences were another turn off. I have been trying to screw up the courage to try one, so at least this means I won't have to torment myself.... I wonder if they are going to change status earn in F on domestic trips in the USA?

The decision has now been made to discontinue “MASAs” as they represent a short cut to tier status and add a significant cost without the revenue in return.

The financial realities of our business have been well publicised, and I hope you can see the logic.

Hi Red Roo,

Yes I can see logic in that you may need to make changes but to think that MASA's aren't bringing in revenue is not right in my opinion, at a best guess I would say 80% of flights booked via masa by AFF members are flights that we wouldn't have otherwise booked (Status runs). Due to U class limited availability on a per flight basis and all the MASA flights I've been on have been half full in J class, ie we weren't taking up scarce space. That means the points we burnt and co-payment are giving you revenue. and helping cover the costs of the flight.

According to the AFF MASA spreadsheet, and this is only a sample of what people have booked since the spreadsheet was started, AFF members alone have potentially booked almost 18.5million points worth of travel, and with co-payments of $165k.

The only reason I fly QF is because I have status with you, take that away and suddenly I won't want to pay more for a QF flight over another airline.

But I guess QF thinks this is a good change and that it will become more profitable, however I think when we see the next QFF results it will be done, in terms of billings and number of points redeemed.

Time will tell!

There is no way that the new earn table is "simpler".

And I can't find anywhere were short/medium and long is defined for domestic flights??

Simpler?! OMG!

As a current QF WP, can I put my AA FF# on a QF (or any OW) booking and still get into the lounges? I've no status on AA.

Bit of a noob question but I've never done it before (never had to).

All those tables, definitely do not try to explain a 'simpler' frequent flyer program. This has definitely changed my flying behaviour, as I expect it will for most.
