Screaming brats on the other hand are not acceptable. I don't have children but is it really that hard to control children?
I agree, it isn't that hard. But it can take experience and knowledge of the child. It also has to be targeted at the age of the child. I've had a couple babies on seats that have been troublesome, including one on a long haul to Europe. In every case all it has taken is for me to pull funny faces and that seems to be the circuit breaker. Well except for the child flying to Europe. I have no idea what his parents were doing but he did settle down every time he saw my stupid faces (the price of peace) or my children.
As for upbringing. That is very true, clearly set expectations and consistent enforcement. Something I can thank SWMBO for instilling, in fact I'm pretty sure she does that to me as well. The one exception is that reason only works on 4+. Under 4 it is very much compromise time and a fair amount of pandering to the child, i.e. Funny faces - trying to occupy them.
Of course, my children have always travelled well. Possibly because their earliest travel experience involved 6, 10 or 12+ hours in a car. By comparison a couple of hours in a metal tube is much easier.
