Asking for help

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Just answer that I have a detective friend in London who i will ask to meet you at the airport on arrival. He will arrange accommodation for you.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

If the person is a regular traveller (Sounds like they would be as they mention AA miles) they presumably have a credit card,in that case many credit cards especially AMEX
offer emergency cash advances and help in situations like this.
Maybe I have a sadly poor opinion of human nature these days but it sounds like a scam to me.
Cheers

It's a scam. Been around before, so looks like they are recycling it.

A friend of a friend on FB was scammed - she sent $300.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

It is a fb scam - a friend of mine had his fb status updated with essentially that, saying he was in trouble in spain and needed money wired to get him home. Which was strange because he was asleep on my couch at the time the update happened.

Thanks Lindsay, yeah looks like a friend is recycling it, they are just adding their own personal touch to it.

I thought I would mention it see if anyone else had received something similar.

As docjames said, scammers are hacking FB accounts and posting as if the person - so they are sucking in friends who don't pay attention, don't know where their "friend" is.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Not yet, but my Facebook may have had an unauthorized access Friday night. As we discussed at your birthday dinner, it may have been me trying to log in on a friend's phone, or some stranger with mischief in their heart. Will see if all my FB friends start phoning me ..:oops:

Maybe they are having a laugh, but I wrote back and said No.

What do you suggest.

Bundy Bear & others, just checked my emails and I got the same email from our friend at 9.09am, then you emailed it to be at 9.54am.

So he has been hacked. If I wanted to know where he was, I'd check FT or AFF for recent posts to see if they gave an idea to current location.

It doesn't even sound or look like him - no spelling mistakes and perfect grammar and punctuation ;)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Of course it is a scam.Mrsdrron and I got such an email from our daughter-in-law stranded in Europe and flying into london.Problem is we were staying with her in sydney at the time which is why I sent my previous reply.
Her Yahoo email account had been hacked and she couldn't access it.

I received that email and did reply offering some generic assistance and some names of ppl around.

I thought it was fake but there were enough clues for me to think it was possibly legitimate. As the request didn't include a money portion i wasn't too worried at this stage. However would have verified details if anything else was requested.

I received a similar email but it was not asking for money!

You should have read it, actually there are a few clues, that most of us didn't pick up on immediately, our friend was having a bit of a joke.

Ditto, although a member on AFF forwarded it to me as I'm in London. Until I saw your posts, I didn't think much of it:!:

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I am reasonably convinced it's not real now as I've now received a message, on FT though rather than AFF! I don't remember him ever having gone to OzFest in ADL.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

That being said, it's not a straight copy/paste from something and seems to be done on the fly. Some of it does have truth.. the mystery continues...

Re: The totally off-topic thread

This is really very personalized.
wonder how many OzFest Adelaide participants have received it. And the dialogue is very Australian.

It almost does actually seem legit. Does anyone have a photo of <the member>?
