Mental note to self: If robbed in future, do not come to AFF for assistance :)

Depends.

Actually the social networks built by the op did save the day. From what i understand, the combined forces ensured that they were able to get the assistance they needed.

Although i could do the same feat in the same city without assistance as i know ppl, the assistance provided did save the day for them. Horribly expensive consequences of it not working out.

The core issue here was that the email sent caused some to (rightfully) doubt its authenticity. Once that barrier was overcome things did work out.

The collective help of AFF has been of assistance, what you don't see written on the forums was the behind the scenes contact that was made. The original email was forwarded onto an AFF who was in the area.

Note to self - get to some of the social events on AFF so you know who I am just in case!!!

Sorry if my post came across as crass or inappropriate. Should have used more smileys!

I still think that if I was in a similar situation I would have contacted family, policy and/or embassy before sending a note out to my broader social network. I'm happy this worked out for the mysterious unknown member and that his network saved the day

He did all of the above :!:

When I rang him he was extremely relieved to hear a familiar voice as the stress was obviously beginning to tell on him.

I wonder how much a 10 min mobile call to Madrid costs???? (answer $8.25). Now I wonder if it's covered by my cap????

Family were contacted before we got the email, although we didn't know this at the time, although one family member hadn't read their email,

Like your post sometimes what is written online or in an email could actually be read differently by each person.

.... and from the responses here it most certainly was taken differently by different people. Some were still unsure even after I had spoken with him and I was totally comfortable that it was him and there was no duress.

Telstra plans generally don't include international calls in the cap (athough some do).

I did say some do, and it looks like the one most expensive plan in the various families.

If you're on any of the lesser caps, then international is additional.

I am happy to let everyone know that a full passport since been issued and said person is back on track and has continued on the rest of their travels.

Fantastic news, thanks to all that were involved and helped out as appropriate, despite possible risks.

I'm very happy that things turned out ok,that's really good news, and through you Flashware I apologize for doubting the person concerned.
Cheers
