Noticed that acronyms and abbreviations are used alot in AFF. In one thread alone, I've noticed the following abbreviations being used:
- YMMV, LTG. WP, SR, SG, P1, CLPO, FWIW, CSM, CSS, HLO.

Being a novice in this game, can someone point me to anywhere in AFF where such acronyms are defined.

just type in 'abbreviations' in the search box at the top of the page..

The thread that Hvr linked should explain most of the abbreviations used on AFF.

This is what the abbreviations you've pointed out mean:
-YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary - in other words, you may or may not experience the same result
-LTG: LifeTime Gold (status with Qantas)
-WP: Platinum frequent flyer status
-SR: Status run - a flight/s taken in order to earn some extra status credits
-SG: Gold frequent flyer status
-P1: Qantas Platinum One frequent flyer status (Qantas' highest status level)
-CLPO: I'm going to assume that this one means "Chairmans Lounge/Platinum One" - a very "elite" Qantas frequent flyer who has Platinum One status, as well as membership of Qantas' invitation-only Chairmans Lounge
-FWIW: For What It's Worth
CSM: Customer Service Manager (aka. the purser)
CSS: Customer Service Supervisor - the 2nd in charge (after the CSM) of the cabin crew on a flight
HLO: Hand Luggage Only

Here's a couple more of the most common ones:
PS: Silver frequent flyer status
HUACA: Hang Up And Call Again (what to do when you get a lazy/unhelpful call centre agent)
J: Business class
Y: Economy class

If you're viewing AFF on a computer, you may also notice that some abbreviations (including several of the ones you've listed) are faintly underlined. If you see that, hover the mouse over the abbreviation and it will explain the meaning.

Hope that helps, and feel free to keep asking questions if you need anything clarified!

6 years a member, you'd think you might have ponder on some of these before... :)
People often sign-up on a forum, and forget about it, only to re-visit it years later (i've done this on car forums). Length of tenure does not necessarily mean they've been loitering around here to learn our strange language ;)

CSM: Customer Service Manager (aka. the purser)
CSS: Customer Service Supervisor - the 2nd in charge (after the CSM) of the cabin crew on a flight

I think that may vary between VA and QF. I understood that VA's main cabin crew member is called a CSS.

On another note it gets slight more confusing with things like FWIW, ISTR, IIRC. These are all general internet abbreviations that I first encountered over 20 years ago.

And 23 posts, so I'm going to assume they haven't had much of a chance to see acronyms.

. 0513 must be too early in the day..

I must admit I get annoyed with myself for not knowing every airport code in the world. :)

I realise it's no biggy and I can use the web to find, but why can't people write Chicago instead of ORD, not many more key strokes, or do people do it as some sort of one upmanship? Dunno.

ORD apparently refers to Orchard Field and not Orlando, which to me would make more sense. Anyway, DOH, OMG this SUX, LOL. Or as James May would say, cough.

Some cool stuff here..... Airport Codes and yes, I'll bookmark it for future reference!

Yes, Orlando is MCO, not to be confused with FCO being the code for Rome airport.

AFAIK ORD is O'Hare airport.

I must admit I find the abbreviations for status used here more whimsical than informative. And too context-dependent.
Especially when they conflict with IATA or other, external, established acronyms (eg PG - Partner Gold / Bangkok Airways).
I'd prefer to have something straightforward like QCL, QP1, QP, QG, QS, QB & QC for QF status and VC, VP, VG, VS, VR & VL for VA status for example.
However I'm sure someone will soon point out that at least one of them would conflict with an IATA code.

EDIT - I noted after posting that only two of these acronyms were in use and appeared underlined. When I hovered for the explanation in each case the explanation was obscure enough to require a second explanation.

No changes, please. I've only just got the hang with most of them.

That one is fine.

The ones that do my head in are the stupid abbreviations used such at TT for TransTasman, TP for TransPacific, TA for TransAtlantic, CD for ChauffeurDrive. Yeah right. Each one of those is a totally different accepted abbreviation so why confuse the matter?

If we didn't use aiport codes people might assume I am flying from Brisbane to Melbourne (MLB) in Florida.....as the QF (damn there's another) website offers me the option all the time.

I'm particularly struck by the contradiction of QCC and VGW. For consistency sake it should be either QC and VGW or QCC and VGWC.

Thanks. I don't even have that excuse, I posted at 0513 in your time zone. It was more like 813 for me. And I'd even had my coffee by then...

Fair enough, but how about using the following format Chicago (ORD) so that dummies like me know what you are refering to. As I said previously it wouldn't add too many more keystrokes. That way when people write Sydney (YQY), I'll know they are referring to something other that Sydney (SYD).

Apologies to you as well, my smiley came out as a question mark.

I prefer to write SEA-PHX-DFW-ORD-BOS, etc. I wouldn't ever bother to write that sort of routing in full. To me it just makes sense to do it that way.

Anyway, you get the hang of it after a while. ;)

Edit: Also, some cities have more than one airport option. If flying into Washington, DC, for example, you could go through DCA, IAD or BWI. The Washington, DC area is served by three different airports (You could use any of these airports depending on travel needs. Depending on your destination, some airlines may offer better prices from one location than another. You may also find direct/indirect flights from one airport and not from another).
