So daughter booked and paid for her ticket in Y LHR-MEL. We then booked J on points. Next we looked at an upgrade for daughter (23yo) on points, but cant do so as her discount Y ticket doesn't allow upgrades.

What to do?

can we

1. alternate 1 person in Y other 2 in J swapping when we want (subject to hostie Ok)?
2. beg for daughter to be upgraded at LHR, or online...or elsewhere?
3. other?

Obviously it is out of the question to move the 2 of J to Y. Whilst I'm keen I'm not that desperate, but would love to get daughter into J if we can.

Your collective brains and ideas would be appreciated.

item 2 should of course also include as an option "beg for her upgrade on board"

We depart LHR on SG305 on Sep 10th and the Singapore-MEL SG217 on Sep 11

Hi mandja, probably the only thing that might work is if you contact SQ and ask if you can use the cost of the Y ticket and purchase a J ticket.

Swapping cabins is frowned upon and if allowed only one swap for the journey is permitted.

Of course the lesson here is for daughter to consult with parents before booking a ticket. :)

Are you on Singapore Airlines? as in SQ?

They are notoriously strict with upgrades. Paying up to an upgradeable class may be an option. SQ Y is good (for Y). She's only 23, she'll survive.

I've had visitors from Y come and join for a chat and a coffee. Not sure how the rotation of the seats goes.

a)You could consider refund of the Y tix, accept the penalty and use miles for a redemption booking.
b) Upgrade the current Y tix to a flexi and then do the upgrade.
c) Call the Call Centre, to see what ideas they can suggest.

Do keep an eye on the availability of J redemption seats so that they will still be available of you do go through the pain of the process.

Don't let her discomfort get in the way of your flight or your lounge.

As an additional run, J pax cannot guest Y pax into the lounge.

Are you sure about this, Alby?
I have just offered to guest 2 pax in to F lounge on my redemption tickets....
Based on advice from CE on this forum? Can anybody clarify?

As a general rule, non status F and J tickets cannot guest, across most airlines in pretty much every lounge. There may be exceptions, what flights and carrier?

Is this with SQ? 'Normally' IMHE, F and J tickets have same rules on guesting lounge access whether paid or redeemed. PX status just adds extra lounge access.

Nothing to do with how you paid. It's class of service vs status benefits. Not sure on SQ, I have *A gold when I travel in J.

I imagine no guests, though, for F or J with no status. Happy to be wrong.

star alliance rules are clear - J pax no guesting, F pax allowed one guest. This applies to paid or award tickets.

Status pax have different guesting rules (ie one guest regardless of class of service).

Other than a paid upgrade, you should all expect to travel in the class ticketed. This means no visiting the business class cabin by your daughter in economy. It is possible the crew on the day might allow a visit, but you should expect the answer to be a (polite) 'no'. You are of course free to visit your daughter in economy from business class.

It is however possible to swap seats before the flight starts... so you may wish to consider this for one of the legs (either to, or out of, Singapore). Simply advise the crew that Mr (or Mrs) will be taking the seat in economy, and the daughter taking the seat in business class. If you make this swap, you should assume there will be no visiting rights by the passenger in economy to the business class cabin.

As my understanding, quick search found F rules for oneworld

"
  • First Class passengers may invite one guest to join them in the lounge. The guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld airline."

Indeed. It seems skyteam is the odd one out - First class cannot guest at all unless they are skyteam elite.

Good to see I am wrong. No guests in J only. Probably could be guesting a few more people then...

Is this pertaining to SQ in particular? Haven't done it on them, but the 2 or 3 times (only) I have wanted to have a Y pax join me in J on long haul on other airlines (QF, AY) I have asked and been granted, including once 2 Y pax on QF when the J cabin was practically empty. My technique and I suggest the OP try this:

* Do only if there is a vacant seat next to you (ie no visitor standing in aisle chatting);

* Approach the CSM at a time when he/she is not busy; don't ask from your seat;

* Acknowledge that I'm asking a privilege, and hoping the CSM doesn't mind me asking;

* Would the CSM grant to favour of friend(s) / work colleague of mine in Seats(s) Y of Row XX of Economy to join me in the J cabin for a short while, perhaps after the meal service?

* If yes, ask the CSM to throw me a nod when my guests should retreat back to their own seats (saves CSM and friends embarrassment at the time of retreat :) )

* Afterwards, go find the CSM to thank (assuming the favour was granted).

Re swapping seats before departure, I think this should be a request also, rather than 'advising' the crew? I recall a couple of instances posted on AFF when the crew took umbrage when finding a pax who was in a non assigned seat during take-off. I think the form is that everyone takes their seat for take-off but ask if 2 can swap for the duration before take-off, then do it at seatbelt sign off. But I stand to be corrected.

SQ protects their premium cabins and it would be an exception to the rule to allow this sort of visiting. You can ask - along the lines you have mentioned, but the expectation should be a 'no', with anything different a 'bonus'. The business class passenger can always go to economy! CX is the same, visitors are almost certainly denied.

Swapping before departure is a different issue - it's not two people trying to get the benefits of a higher cabin... it's simply swapping one person for another... there's no 'doubling up'. The reason for advising the crew is so they know not to be surprised when 'Mrs' is actually a 'Mr' (or vv). Of course that swap won't work if a child fare is involved if the child fare has been paid for the higher cabin.

The couple of times I have heard a passenger in QF F request a family member come join them from business class that request has been denied, and one of those was on a 747 where there were just two of us... me and the other (non-related) passenger who made the request. Maybe business class is handled more leniently.

Not sure about SQ but Emirates did not allow one of us to swap. But in the end they did even better - upgraded both of us.

Heavans above. My understanding is that she's 23. Leave her in whY. It's character forming.

No joy asking to have a quick drink together on Air NZ; was told it would 'ruin the integrity of the cabin'. :shock: If the airline has a bar a drink together would be easier (apparently NZ no longer utilise their wine bar).
