Looking to rent Hertz for the weekend at Gold coast. New to car rental, so need some help:

a) Is it worth building reward points if i am not a frequent rental user?

b) Which airline is the best to send points over - VA, SQ or EK?

c) If I have car rental insurance on my credit card, do I listen to the counter guy/online choices, and buy the insurance?

d) Where would i get a better deal, online offers or at the counter on the day of my arrival?

e) Is the Fuel Prepay is worth it?

Cheers!!!

If you are an NRMA member you can get a discount from Thrifty. I never pre purchase fuel in Australia - easy enough to refill at/near airport on return. My annual travel insurance; credit card insurance cover any excess - never touch the up-sell insurance pushed at the pick up counter.

a) Probably not. I'd take whatever points may come with your car as a bonus.

b) Which airline do you use the most?

c) I'd check the terms of your credit card insurance VERY carefully.

d) Online from my experience

e) Rarely. Except if you are in a hurry or if you don't know where the nearest petrol station to the airport is.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

Occasionally hertz will offer triple points or something and then its worth it. In general its not but there is a site frequentflyerbonuses.com or similar whee you can see the best promo

a & b) Each airline lists its award rates, and sometimes, airlines can have promotions. e.g. SQ can have a double/triple points promotion. Note that Hertz does not send points to QF.

c) Read the credit card insurance conditions like your house depends on it. I don't have credit card insurances, so I sometimes use https://www.worldwideinsure.com/car-hire-excess-insurance.php which is a lot cheaper than the rental car companies. Keep in mind that, should something go wrong, the rental car company will still charge you as per their non-protected conditions, and then you need to make a claim with the credit card/3rd party for reimbursements. So if your finance situation does not allow you to be out of pocket for a few thousand dollars for a while, this type of insurance may not be suitable for you.

d) Check out the discounts page as well. The specials normally require some sort of a code, and won't be automatically included if you simply did a search. On pick up, double check the invoice, as sometimes the discount codes don't stick. The websites for other countries can have different discount codes as well, although this can be very time consuming to check out. I also know that some like to declare they are in different countries from what they actually is. This can yield better rates in some cases but I wouldn't recommend on this. Should something goes wrong, this might void the insurance which the car rental company has, and you can technically be liable for the full bill. I haven't seen this happened yet but I most certainly wouldn't want to be the first one to see it. Likewise for using discount/corporate codes which you aren't qualified for.

e) I generally have a good idea where I will be driving to and how much fuel I'll use, so I do take the pre-pay option sometimes.
