Anyone advised these guys that they want to cancel the auto-renew? Here's the response I got:

"Unfortunately we can not cancel auto renew this was in the T&C that you accepted when you took out the offer . My best advise is to highlight a date in your online calendar and just send us a quick email a week or so before your contract is due to end and we can cancel your account then ."

Seems a bit of a joke - suggestions, aside from actually doing the above? I don't recall seeing any T&Cs that required me to wait until a week prior to cancel the auto-renew (and legally is there such a thing as giving too much notice?). It's annoying, as I'd rather not have to keep track of something for 11 months and 2 weeks...I did get the 18K voucher, but it'll be poor value if I pay twice...

Cheers

Just looked at the offer and on the Irish newspaper site it shows only 9000 Avios points on offer.

As reported up-thread, the offer changed on 1 September down from 18 to 9 Avios :(
I am travelling around Scotland at the moment and was looking at this with a friend who was interested....I didn't have the time to read the thread so thanks for the confirmation....appreciated.

This is how they get you, I suppose.

I've just sent an email requesting to cancel the subscription (I don't really care about accessing it). I don't think they'd be in their rights to prevent you from cancelling. Surely under Australian/EU law you always have the right to cease custom with any business, albeit you won't get a refund.

Other than that I'll change the credit card details so they don't work.

  1. You will also receive access to 7-days of the digital edition for the time period above. Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of the 6 or 12-month period.
  2. You may cancel your membership after 14 days of your membership start date without giving any reason and any remaining payments will be refunded to you. If you choose to cancel your subscription to the Independent within this fourteen-day cooling-off period, your Avios points will not be due or credited to your AerClub account.

  1. As I expected, the auto-renew is in the T&C - but you can still cancel at any time (you just can't cancel the auto-renew only). So if you don't care about accessing the news, just cancel the subscription.

I got the following reply
You will be sent an email towards the end of your subscription asking if you would like to renew.

There will also be an email with another special avois points offer coming up towards the end of your subscription.

If you cancel your account now you will not receive this email and you will not have access to the irish independent online.

For any further queries please do not hesitate in contacting us.

I just responded with "that's fine, please cancel now".

when clicking through to the purchase page it says "** 9,000 Avios Points (International subscribers)
** 18,000 Avios Points (ROI subscribers)"

not sure how they'll know - if it's address its easy to put something but if they're tracking IPs and having the use a VPN then it might a bit trickier, even more so if it's a combination of both.

or track credit card? unless you have an Irish bank, it could be the flag which gets them to look closer at your residency.

Anyone pulled the trigger on this amended deal for Irish residency yet? It seems the only gates in the billing addresses are 1) Country - Ireland, and 2) Contact number - must be Irish number.

Even with a legitimate number, each individual's card provider may have different levels of security to pick up on this activity.

Would be cheaper to wait for an avios 50% bonus at those rates? 12K avios + 50% bonus would come in around AUD369 for 18K. But of course you get the Economist with this deal :)

Many jobs could tax deduct the subscription
