Holidays and Airport 'Chaos' since COVID

I have an incoming flight from SIN to MEL next saturday/sunday and with the upcoming strike it looks like it is going to be chaotic at the airports. Are ground staff including luggage handlers part of the strike ?

Brace yourselves

Hopefully keeps to dnata only - which would mean my decision to book a back-up Virgin itinerary against my up-coming QF one, will be a good one (I can't see that Virgin is a client of DNATA).

Here was the line for T2 terminal in Syd 😳
I realise its not a short term solution but all that photo above says to me, is that the footprint of T2 should have been expanded into the area between T2 and T3 to give T2 more floor space pre-security screening and also post security screening, this should have been done years ago, and there is no need for administration buildings, airport staff parking and offices and Qantas Credit Union offices to be taking up valuable airside real estate at Mascot. The very old original 1930s terminal is of dubious heritage value at the moment anyway, as its inaccessible to nearly everyone, but if they really want to save it could be incorporated into the new design if required.

Something like this as an added incentive to stop the narrowbody every 15 mins madness in the golden triangle, that also contributes to gate shortages and ground and runway/slot congestion at Mascot. No reason why T2 can't be connected to T3 airside either. You also get to increase the size of the T2 passenger drop off zone as another benefit. But that would require long term planning - something that airports seem incapable of.

The only issue I had arriving this morning on QF2 was that we were due in just after 5am, captain said not enough ATC’s had come in to work so we had to circle over the southern highlands until 6am. We were first in the queue and it was a good run. Checked in bag at the domestic counter at international, I missed my 7am flight to Canberra, but was put on a later 717, my view down the back.

On arrival into Canberra we waited for quite a while for the air bridge person to do their thing, well over 20 minutes, not the first time this has happened here.

Did you have checked bags and did they make it?
My bag was checked through from Bangkok to Sydney, via Singapore, Jetstar to Qantas, no problems with it arriving in Sydney, then separate checkin to Canberra, bag was on the carousel as I exited.
I was a bit concerned about my initial Berlin, Munich, Muscat, Bangkok, but no problems there either.

Oh you only did the final leg of QF2, I assumed incorrectly you flew form LHR as that is where QF2 starts, was hoping for some good new wrt baggage from LHR.

Meanwhile in Bali, sounds like DPS has had a complete meltdown. 5+ hr immigration queue yesterday!

Australian school hols are over - where we’re these peeps coming from?

The “concierge” service mentioned sounds like a good investment.

Peak summer holiday period for Europe and UK, im lead to believe Indonesia is popular with Germans. Cant see the appeal myself.
That’s true and the thought did occur to me. Especially with August upon us.

Might also explain the conga lines at SIN T1 arrivals on Thu. I was checking out the DF (a lot busier and mostly reopened compared with T3 in Mar) and saw the lines near the D pier immigration. Although hardly anyone at the C pier immigration.

We saw a Sunday street festival whilst recently in Germany - sponsored by “Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia” (complete with food stalls, info etc).

Direct flights to DPS not as yet but tons of one stop options ex-Germany.

Mate flying to Bali today from Sydney on Jetstar. Got to the airport 3h15 minutes before take off incase of delays noted above. Made it through to the gate in 30 minutes. Had 2h45m to kill now he has been informed the flight is delayed by 2h20m. Probably becasue of the delays out of DPS noted above. 5hours at the gate for my mate, lucky he has an e book. Can see the bali bogans being blind drunk by the time boarding begins!

No long queues at SYDi today, walked straight up to QF J check-in, used priority lane for egate (1 person in front of me) then had to join the regular queue for security as no priority lane. However singles were being sent to first lane and i was through in under 5 mins.

QF J lounge busy but not chockers.
