I live in regional Qld so I have to abide by the 4kg max inside and 7kg max as premium hand luggage QLink rules before I can get onto the bigtime QF.

I carry a netbook in a all leather breifcase along with papers, diary, pens, phone and book/magerzine to read.
Its a pain but all meeting papers are on USB, so I read them at Qpub or in hotel room.
If the breifcase looks too fat I carry the book in my hand. Unless it looks heavy they leave you alone.
Although at SYD earlier this year they bailed the guys in front and behind to check the weight, maybe the Gold Tag got me off the hook as the other two were not QFF (one time the bag was fat and around 6kg).

The other bag is not a roller and is a QFF bag my wife got me a few years back.
I can do 4 nights away and be under 7 kg.
1 spare trousers - never needed them because a spill but did have a zipper bust while I was wearing a Mr Smiley jocks so ... I was glad I had the other spare
3 b/shirts
Wear polo shirt down and back - wash 1st night in
1 change of underwear and wash each night
Only time I take 2 sets is if I am in only 1 night
only take one pair of shoes - the ones I am wearing
t/shirt and shorts as pj's
summer/autumn I am around the 7kg
In winter I am wearing a heavy coat so usually the bag is around 6 kg going down
Coming back I bring home the toiletries and coffee/sugar sachtels (dont use them so bring them home) so that bumps me up to around 7kg

BTW it seems that when you are flying those at the meeting/conference always wnat to send you home with heaps of paper/brochures?

My wife (only when she flys with me) can do the 7kg and 4 kg thing as well.

I got my "normal" deodorant confiscated in LHR last month. The guy said because it was 2 big, but as I pointed out to him, the other 7 airports I'd been in in the 4 weeks hadn't even said anything so how could it be? It was at that point MrsGurio took over because she knew I wasn't going to let the point go and he was going to end up getting to know internally a bit better. He also had a problem with our snow globes, and I sure as hell wasn't going to let the 22 of them go without a fight but thankfully he dropped it. Normally I take one of the little cans with the "proper" lids as opposed to the locks on them, and the only issue I have is that the security people reckon it looks like a can of mace so they ask to see it but after that it is generally fine.

Tell ya what munitalP - I'm going to try that theory next week. Even though with what I go away with they wouldn't let as carry on, I'll give it a go to see what little I can take! However my tech bag is the one that weighs the most, especially with all the chargers and general paraphernalia you seem to need to carry these days.

I'm really interested in this plastic bags, $2 shop you say? Basically like lunch bags, or more sophisticated? Anyway, might quiz you on the 15th. Otherwise, I don't travel with a roller, but the plastic bags might still be useful.

The QF site on dangerous goods (remember that one we breeze past when finalising OLCI?) specifies that aerosols are OK in checked bags but not in carry-ons.
Made it out of BNE with aerosol in carry-on (after they confiscated my dangerous small scissors:evil:), now to see if TSV security are an enlightened bunch.

Very impressed! However, I travel overseas every six months to volunteer on Archaeological projects. Can you PLEASE advise how I am to organise my packing when I need: 2 changes of heavy duty long cargo pants, 2 t shirts, 2 long sleeve men’s’ shirts with tails (to cover up in the ‘clothing sensitive’ Middle East and Central Asia, 2 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of underwear, 2 bras, (I operate on the one dirty/one clean theory with a lot of rotation!)heavy duty work gloves, tracksuit, comfy shoes (to wear AFTER digging), thongs (for wearing when bathing/showering), swim suit (IF bathing is the only option for getting clean) and sarong, decent outfit (a pair of tailored pants, silk shirt, ‘soft’ underwear), large travel towel, toiletries bag (with minimum 2in1 shampoo, soap, talc, deodorant, body lotion), first aid kit (alcohol swaps, tea tree cream, blister pads, headache/nausea/diarrhoea treatment, bandaids, sprain bandage, Insect repellent, Suntan cream) Archaeology tool kit, industrial kneepads, stainless steel drink bottle, Plastic/heavy Duty Tea mug (for morning tea break on site)‘Duct’ tape, small sewing kit, spare batteries, spare camera ‘cards’, pencil case ( black and blue ink pens, 2 Sharpies’, eraser, 2 HB pencils, small strip of Blue Tak, small tube of Super glue), couple of packets of travel tissues, torch AND headlamp, small fold up camp stool, binoculars, small laundry kit for washing clothes that I don’t want destroyed’ by the local washing woman who usually ‘terrorises’ washing in boiling hot water and industrial strength detergent. I struggle to fit all of this in my Blackwolf Grand Tour 65 Litre Travel Pack with Wheels
In my day pack (aka carry-on bag) a change of T shirt, underwear, socks if main bag goes ‘missing’), airline approved toiletries kit, a book, mobile phone charger, spare pens, pencils and small pocket notebook, travel pillow, packet of ‘Wet Ones’, and a couple of packets of ‘Soothers’ for the flight
I wear my boots, carry my rain jacket and my Akubra hat. Now I want some hints on how to pack it!.

Easy answer - you don't do carry on with that stuff!

Either lose most for forget it.

Should I have qualified it with 'hold lugguage' or 'checked bag' - how do you pack?
Trust me - I would never try to carry this load on when travelling my one of my Dig trips.

When travelling Solo, it's HLO world wide - but then again, I don't do digs ...

FWIW, I'm very adept at Hand washing in hotel basins ... ;)

I have the 85L one and it would probably fit it better, but then you are definitely checked baggage!! no hand luggage for you!

Ship a big chunk of it to site?

I'd pack your clothes and such in carry on, then check in the heavy duty work stuff - first aid kit, boots, mug etc. Otherwise, do you have the option to buy in country for stationary, mug and such

TSV security wanted to see the can so I duly removed it to show cap-on so they re-screened my carry-on without the can(?) and went on my way:?::?:

Having taken inspiration from MunitaIP I've decided to give carry-on only a go for my Sydney trip next week. I picked up a 52cm Samsonite Ultralite roller at Myer this morning for $149 (after their usual 40% off) which was better than the best price I could find online so was pretty happy with that. I think they also had 30% off Antler and Samsonite B Lite.

I tend to overpack and don't end up using half of the stuff I take away so this will be an interesting challenge. The wait for bags at the carousels in Melbourne of a night seems to be getting longer and longer so I'm looking forward to being able to bypass that, particularly on a Friday night when you can't get home fast enough.

I also love the space bags idea, but couldn't find any at the local $2 shop so checked out Big W and found this 4 pack for about $23. Just the right size to fit in the roller.

... But the key Q is how much does your carry on weigh? Mine on average is 10-11kgs!!...which can be a problem on some airlines.

...

As pictured, the bag weighed in at 9.2kg

I could loose the chargers into the laptop bag and the belt for weigh in, and this takes it to 8.8kg

Nice work. I haven't checked in luggage in years (save the occasional domestic flight such as in Canada where you cannot fit any hand luggage on the plane). I travel up to a month at a time with only carry-on, and can fit 2 suits, shoes, 5 shirts, casual trousers, 2/3 t-shirts and polos, boardies, undies, socks, ties etc and toiletries into my rollaboard. I generally keep 'liquids, aerosols and gels' in my laptop bag so it's within easy reach going through security. Weight is my only issue for these long trips but have only been weighed once in the last few years.

Like many others I'm a hand luggage only kind of guy. I was converted about 4 years ago when travelling home from Calgary with my boss (hand luggage man). We had a tight connection in LA and my checked bag didn't make it. The look on his face as he strolled off towards the domestic terminal in Sydney and jumped onto an earlier flight is was did it for me.

I've never had any real problems with carry on. The main issues being:
  1. Weight - I have a briefcase that usually would be around 6-7kg plus main bag that comes in at around 8-9kg. Usually no-one questions this although last week my main bag got weighed in Perth at check in and I was advised to mover some items into my briefcase (which luckily wasn't weighed as it was overweight):).
  2. Hotels - as others have noted the number of nights between a 2 night hotel stay fixes how many shirts (and underwear) is needed. I usually take advantage of the hotel laundry.
  3. Drink - and this has often been my downfall. I have a nasty habit of only packing late on the night before a flight. This usually means that I've sunk a fair amount of wine and the consequences can be disasterous when I open my bag up in some far flung part of the world. If any of you have seen a bloke with one brown and one black shoe on in meetings - that was me:shock:. I'm also the person with his shirt cuffs sown together (or a pair of comedy lone star of Texas cufflinks) due to forgetting to pack any; with his trousers falling down (forgot to pack belt) and with tissue paper stuck all over his face (forgot my razor and had to rely on one supplied by the hotel - in deepest Russia).
As I say - can't see what the issue is:)
