That reminds me.

What do hand-luggage-only guys do for razors?

Just look for a cheap place to buy some disposables at your destination?

I always seem to be in a situation where all I can find is 10-20 packs. I leave a lot of unused razors behind. :\
 
I take my normal razor - actually I have two razors - one for travel and one for home. Things like a gillette fusion power get through security screening fine. I have never used a traditional razor with replaceable blades (I think although I might have done at one stage just to be different).
 
Same here - my Gillette gets packed (when I remember). Never had any problems. For shaving foam I use those small cans of Gillette Foamy that Qantas used to have in the J toilets (nowadays I have to rely on F upgrades or Emirates flights to restock)
 
I think they're referring to the ones that Sweeney Todd used to use - cut throat razors. I went through LAX the day after the shoe bomber had a go and had all my bags emptied and scrutinised (never seen choas like it). No problems with the razor.
 
Razors as we tend to know them today are fine.

The comment by simongr 'I think you might be misinterpreting the prohibitions - they are on straight razors (aka "cut throat razors") and razor blades (the loose ones that sandwiched between metal plates that your grandfather used to use).' is correct as far as I can see.
 
Wow. I had no idea. Have wasted a lot of money on disposable razors all this time. What a goose. :/

Haven't tried an electric razor for many years but they were cough last time I looked into them.
 
I had a problem with an electric one a few years back at SYD when it activated itself in my checked in luggage, I got paged in the terminal but by the time I got to the bag area, it's battery had gone flat!

At the airport in BRU we had a similar issue once but with a different buzzing elecrical device in a ladies hand luggage... :shock: I asked a friend who works at security and this happens at least once a year apparently :D

I stuff mine with socks, and always keep cedar shoe trees in them when not travelling. That, plus keeping them in a shoe bag when travelling seems to work well. :)

On the carry-on vs checked luggage issue, I always go carry-on for domestic, and checked for int'l (unless it's a really short trip, 5 days or less for business).

If I need a suit (or two) I take my Victorinox roller - the built-in suiter is excellent, and the bag has plenty of space for a week (and my briefcase sits nicely on top of it). If I'm checking a roller bag though, my carry-on is always a hold-all, or a big leather duffle bag I have. Two rollers is too much hassle IMO, plus a carry-on roller is easy to fit on QF flights, not so easy on US domestic flights.

It depends where you're flying a bit - no problem on Qantas with free checked baggage, on the US airlines or budget airlines that charge for checked baggage, the bins tend to fill up quickly and it's a pain to try and fit anything overhead.

I purchased a small AA battery shaver, and it works very well and does a close shave. Alternatively, I carry this shaving oil and a disposable razer

I have had issues with the KoS stuff leaking and also have moved away from oils as I now seem to need a hacksaw to shave with and the oils arent as effective. Still searching for the perfect razor/liquid/foam combination.
 
I had exactly the same problem with KoS oil just not lubricating enough for a decent shave and foams just not cutting the mustard either. I have now been using for a while a gel I get from Coles called Shave Gel Fast. It comes in a handy 100g tube which the perfect size as it satisfies the LAG restrictions and it lasts ages as you only need a small amount. The pack is blue and has an Australian flag on the top above the words Shave Gel Fast.
 
I use this stuff (comes in a box) which I get from Woolworths/Big W. I also apply Sorbelene cream before as well (I carry that in a small 40ml container).
It's a great size for travel, fits in a zip-lock bag for accidental spillage (approx. 17cm x 5cm) and is small enough to carry through as LAGS (75g).
