Nice stay, on edge of city, few mins walk to cuba st.

Happy both rooms upgraded,Interconnected rooms made Mrs Mort happy so had the front desk open them as even though the kids are old enough to manage their own room she likes to have them close.

Chocolate Hour was ok, have seen nicer at other locations, was a novelty for the kids.

Breakfast buffet options were above average, could order eggs to order , plus waffles and pancakes, barista coffee extra from what I could tell (I’m a tea drinker)

Staff were friendly, but hotel seemed understaffed at some points.

Accor+ food discounts worthwhile, 50% off makes a big difference to a nice meal (while the kids get uber eats cause the restaurant is too fancy 😀)

It’s more 4 star than 5 star, though at the price could not complain I’d stay there again for the price.

I’ve included some random pics

Another good thing I found about the Porter house in Sydney is that they don’t actually charge anything for the room unless you ask them to.

On checkout they mentioned my drinks and snack at the bar and I said okay to that and email me the invoice. When I looked at the invoice later there was no room charge (it was a flexible booking).

I phoned them, and they very sheepishly acknowledged yes, they hadn’t charged me and thank you for calling. 😊

Free minibar is a published benefits for Platinums at the MGallery brand

Edit: re-reading your post - they didn't charge you for the room? Or drinks in the room?

I'm trying to decide between SO/ or Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour for my next AKL DSC pilgrimage. Any recent experiences? How do the lounges for ALL plats compare between the two?

Have not tried the So, looks nice and I suspect a much better option than the Viaduct location wise. The Sofitel is at the end of a long line of hotel failures and actually went bust during covid taking a few deposits, I didn’t enjoy my stay pre COVID.

I am not a huge fan of Pullmans but the Auckland property is one I would revisit, and has a lounge on the top floor that’s does not get crowded

I stayed at the SO/ this time last year. Location is great, can't comment on the lounge as I didn't have access, but if you search this thread you will see room pics.

Right now I'm staying basically across the road at the Movenpick which is much cheaper but just as comfortable and rooms are brighter.

Review to come.

Property: Movenpick Auckland
Status: Accor+ Gold
Room booked: Superior, 1 Queen Bed, City Side
Room upgraded/type: Sort of. Superior, 1 Queen Bed, Harbour Side, high floor.
Rate: NZ 30% off promo, $590 for 3 nights.
Free internet: Yes
Free Breakfast:  No
Early check in/late out: Not required.
Welcome drink: Yes - via app voucher (see menu below)
Welcome gift: 1 fancy cake and 2 x still water.

Great location in Britomart, easy walking distance to restaurants, ferry and casino precinct. Daily Bread bakery next door does great baguettes and there is a 4Sqaure supermarket next to that should you need more water etc.

Comfy high bed, nice pillows, desk, walk in shower and decent counter space in bathroom, good hanging space in wardrobe and coffee pod machine (although why you'd use it when there is good coffee everywhere in NZ). Plenty of natural light and great block out curtains, no annoying light sources to cover up and good sound proofing.

Bar/restaurant is on top floor. Used my free drink on a rośe but could have had spirits or beer or other wines.

The chocolate hour spread had fondu, chocolates, pastries and cakes including a good number of gluten free option (something my sister who is currently staying at Movenpick Hobart says is missing there).

Due to a lousy turn in the weather, I ate at the inhouse restaurant Boda last night which is Asian fusion. Beef cheeks were melt in the mouth, and the bacon poppers and kimchi fries tasty. Accor+ dining discount happily accepted, although wasn't able to use it on a coffee this morning.

An inconsiderate guest decided to try and smoke in their room yesterday morning (it's a non smoking hotel), set off the smoke alarm resulting in everyone needing to evacuate. Walking down 11 stories of stairs wasn't the exercise I had planned, but two fire trucks arrived quickly, cleared everyone to return.

I would happily stay again when the price is right, it's same neighbourhood as the SO/ but cheaper with better views and more natural light.

Looking for some advice for Singapore please.
Got 2 night stopover later in the year, 2 adults and 2 x littlies.
4 in one room limits available options and there’s no good SNU option, so think I’ll make use of the stay plus perk.

What’s the feeling on:
- Sofitel, $420 after $400 stay + saving for luxury king 38m2
- Fairmont, $692 saving $410 for signature suite 56m2
- Swissotel Stamford, $470 saving $470 for premier room two doubles 40m2

I’ve had great trips at the limited Sofitels I’ve stayed at (Fiji and Saigon) but reading more recent reviews in this thread maybe the Singapore one isn’t the greatest.
I didn’t mind the look of the Stamford but it’s an absolutely massive hotel and not sure I like that.
Appreciate any feedback from recent travellers. We’ve a late evening flight out so I’d like a spot where I’m more likely to get a late check out (platinum) but really it’s a room big enough for the two little ones and a hotel that suits them.

The Stamford and Fairmont (interconnected) are a great location (metro station directly underneath). Yes, the Stamford is huge and can be a zoo but other times fine. It also can have spectacular views. The Fairmont is a lot less manic.

Re late check out, depending on who you’re flying with, there’s also “early checkin” at the Jewel. So you can dump luggage and spend time there with the kids before going airside.

I’ll put one in the mix that’s not on your shortlist, though I can’t confirm root type for 2+2.

Roxy Grand Mercure.

Pros:
  • On an MRT line. Easy airport access.
  • Five blocks to East Coast Beach which has two huge children’s playgrounds.
  • Hotel pool area includes a small but shallow wading pool for kids.
  • Good exec lounge that accepted kids when we last visited.
Cons:
  • Not in the “city”.
  • Step down from the 5 star options you’ve listed.
Finally it’s a crew hotel for a few airlines. That can be good or bad depending on personal preference.

But in my experience it means late checkouts are easier to secure because they’re used to check-in/out at all hours.

We’ve had 2pm checks out reasonably consistently.

Thanks I’ll have a closer look. It’s $483 for 2 nights and available on stay plus - I’d breezed past it looking at the high value stay plus options only…

I forgot about that - thanks! Finnair so looks to be ok from midday for check in if needed.

Pools are way busier at the Fairmont/Swissotel. I think there might be a kids pool there though?

As a plat, I've struggled to decent late checkouts at both Sofitel and Swissotel due to high occupancy. So can't really blame them.

Swissotel has amazing views from the club lounge. Sofitel is also right above a MRT. It's Singapore, you're never far from food :)

Plats at the Sofitel also get access to the Virgin Active gym that's connected. IF you care about that, it's a great perk IMHO.

Roxy Grand Mercure.
I will second the Roxy Grand Mercure. Had a night there in May 2024 on a stopver. About a 15 minute taxi ride from Changi.

Rooms are a good size.

From memory across the main road is a shopping centre with a kids playground. Also across the main road are hawker type food stalls where the locals eat at.

Behind the hotel in Mountbatten Road are very good cafes and restaurants in the old Singapore style. Would definatley stay there again.
