Good one. I find upgrades the best use of points and like to keep a QF balance of 500k. Use progressively though.

It all accumulates quicker than you think when you apply some earning offers and change some quite minor habits.

Re: I've just redeemed my first flights paid entirely with Qantas FF points! Woohoo!!

Frequent flyer points an be very much like money where some folks feel positively impoverished and almost naked when their balance drops below their "safety level".
Others maintain substantial balances for a rainy day use.
I enjoy reading how our members use them so well done jordan85.
Making and using points can be very addictive and getting there on points is an art form for many members in AFF.

Welcome and well done Jordan.

Now you are on the FF points treadmill, you will find it will morph into the status credit treadmill if you are not careful ;)

Spruse, 500k, I'm impressed! I get up 200-300k and have to spend them, I can't help myself

As mentioned previously Jordan, most find the best use of FF points is for upgrading economy flights (Y) to business flights (J) - the letters are the norm on this forum

Cheers

My life has been taken over by QFF - 1.5M points in 3.5 years and I have hardly used them as most of my travel is for work and in that time travelled *every week* (except 1 week) - and I didn't have a chance to use them!

Have travelled o/s for holidays on paid flights because the prices were really good and didn't want to waste points... Finally doing a JASA to DRW over Easter but even then I did it via CBR / BNE for more points and SC I don't need !!! ARRGH I really am trapped in the FF world...... Jordan85 get out while you can !

Same here Munital, just ticked over 350,000 or so and felt the need to redeem them:
2 x J LAX-AKL-ZQN for the folks;
1 x Y LAX-SYD-LAX for SWMBO
1 x J Upgrade SFO-SYD for me.

I almost cried when my balance read 5,000 points :(

But I reassure myself that the selfless warm fuzzy feeling inside is worth it!

Jordan - well done, but as the others have said - it's VERY addictive :)

FWIW,

In the last 14 months we have redeemed
  • 120K on Classic¹ Awards
  • 264K on JASA's
  • 430K on Upgrade Awards

A little frightening to look at it like that.

¹ 2 x Business class SIN - MEL, no need for SC's as already will Qualify WP, so better to save ~$395 difference in
ppplus.bmp
between that and JASA, forgoing the ~15K QFF point earn.

Re: I've just redeemed my first flights paid entirely with Qantas FF points! Woohoo!!

in the last couple of months we redeemed
292000 in 2 classic J awards
128000 in JASA's

almost enough miles in the bank for a 360000 classic award for next year

It is very addictive. My first redemption was when I took the Mrs and her mother on an award ticket to Mexico a few years back. As I had to pay some taxes of wround 50 euros for eacht ticket and could not book the tickets at the same time VISA blocked my card because the AF/KL website took 3 times 50 euros in such a short time :D

You've redeemed how many points serfty? Far out, I thought I was doing well with ~70k redemptions on YASA in the last 12mths.

Just fly 100+ times a year on Qualifying flights for several years.

Also, SWMBO has earned plenty of points for travel (after two ATW's) as a Partner Gold. In that time 200K have been Family transferred to my account.

Re: I've just redeemed my first flights paid entirely with Qantas FF points! Woohoo!!

Can someone please explain if the Status Credits have any benefits if just redeeming FF points and flying on them. Thanks:mrgreen:

If you earn 450 or more SC's, then every 10 SC is worth 111.1 QFF points.

With both SQ and QF points running the decision on SQ points is the hardest to figure.
That 3 year expiry of points could be a real pitfall for the unwary.
As a result I have placed a mental limit on our two Kris accounts with SQ and that number limit is below 4 million.
Currently we are making most points in QF for domestic travel in J using the 42,990 bargain Any Seat redemptions each way for coast to coast long weekends.

It is a bit scary when you tot up the numbers!

In the last 12 months I have earned 656,900 points with 399,005 earned through flying. (I started with an opening balance of 367,754)

I have used points as follows (again in the last 12 months):

192,000 FASA LHR-MEL
128,000 JASA MEL-LHR
256,000 JASA MEL-LHR-MEL

362,000 Points Upgrades  (What a waste, I should have focused on JASA's)

Tony,your points grew.
Did you enjoy the London experience?

Unfortunately I spent 938,000 and only earned 656,900. :(

The JASA's and FASA are for October and December this year. :) My first ever ASA's. I wouldn't have even known about them without AFF. I just assumed all JASA's and FASA's required a ridiculous amount of points.

I'm afraid I'm over the UK! I have to travel there six times a year on business. (In fact just got back today traveling BA whY+) :(

Earned about 400k points this year. Spent about 200k on upgrades (W->J and J->F)

I do find AFF's new attitudes to JASA's mildly amusing. I remember the round condemnation of them when introduced (turning QFF into a frequent spender program), but with the simple addition of SC earn, they are now the "bees knees" so to speak.

Maybe QF should just do that with everything AFF dislikes, and simply bribe people here into silence.

I think you'll find it's also a combination of award inventory showing up as a discounted rate in the ASA engine. Also, I find it hard to believe anyone would pay the full ASA points rates?

When QF is a million for an international J I look up SQ Kris to avoid that problem.
Mostly when you book early as a JASA you don't get to pay 200k points from SYD-PER. Generally it is 42990 with SCs and FF points back.

And generally its the same amount of points going via MEL too, so that give you an extra 80 SC's (but i am guessing cove you were meaning that)

Now i just need to find some good JASA/FASA SYD-LAX, can never seem to find "cheap" ones.

They are the beez neez if you can find those that book into U class.

e.g. It's possible to travel MEL-xSYD-NRT vv this coming weekend for 144K QFF points and $517 on a JASA.

NB Earnings for the trip would be ~14K QFF points and 360 SC's (Instant PS). (A WP would earn an additional 10K QFF points)
