How safe are your details with Virgin?

It came to light recently that Virgin Australia FA's will happily show passengers on the flight the full pax manifest. I would consider this to be a bit of a breach of privacy, however whether the law does or not is another question for the experts.

What do you think?

Virgin Rep, is this company policy to allow this to happen?

Edit: there was a similar 'discussion' on the BA FlyerTalk board around this and the pax manifest available on the iPad.

I also was extremely surprised to see that photo - the nature of the job means it is impractical to keep the manifest under lock and key, so some inadvertent exposure is probably inevitable. But explicitly showing it to pax and allowing it to be photographed concerns me.

I read the subject line and thought not another IT problem.

But this sounds very wrong indeed.

I have nothing to hide. Show 'em my details FA. While you are at it, give me the name of the blonde sitting in 3C on this morning's SYD-OOL. You know, the one who made a call while we were mid-taxi and was still sending texts on ascent.

What was also of concern to me was that the VA FA also had something similar to that, a list of seat numbers of "pax worth having a perv on". Pretty inappropriate IMHO.

For many people this would be a serious security breach, and when this becomes more widely known I anticipate stuff hitting the fan.

Where's the official rep, what is their position?

I've seen manifests on various airlines, especially when in the galley area. I don't recall if the crew showed it to them, or they just took a sneaky shot of it while it was somewhere around. Crew behaviour aside , it was inappropriate for the writer of that report to have been posted on here the way it was.

To be fair, I'm sure there were no bad intentions by the part of the FAs or writer of the TR by having those pics and 'pax of interest' discussion. There is nothing wrong with having a jovial chit chat with the crew especially if you're in J. Yes it may have been a bit of an oversight to post publicly on AFF.

As a photo of the cabin crew is still there from the said flight, I think this topic should be moderated a bit - to avoid any potential repercussions for the crew involved.

AFF is not here to police any companies policies or show favor, nor is a perceived lack of common sense in actions or behaviour by anyone against the rules of the site.

At the end of the day people should be responsible for their actions and be aware of the context of the public domain, by censoring material are we helping foster responsibility?

What I dont want to see is this being blown up, by constantly calling for the company rep for their attention.

Why should a consequence be avoided? I am sure that re-education in this case would be appropriate

There is no way this would be company policy just some very silly Virgin staff.

I'm sure the Virgin rep will be very interested to take all the details!

I believe the crew in question have already been thoroughly "re-educated".

I guess by pushing the point here the OP has ensured the crew have that education reinforced.

There has to be some perks.....surely? (I'm also sure my name is never ever on the "worthy perv" list)

What is on the manifest? Name, seat, FF number, status? Anything else? I am not overly concerned. People lose or throw away boarding passes all the time so they obviously do not care either.

By the way I am not saying it is right but the manifest cannot be protected at all times.

It would appear this is of little concern to most people.

Personally I think if someone is not doing the right thing then they should be reported to cabin crew. But then the friendly people on AFF call you a dobber. Must be some sort of secret frequent flyer I was not aware existed.

Totally agree that it is an issue providing manifests to other passengers. There's a lot of freaks out there. The last thing you want is some sicko random getting your name and stalking you.

I believe it is arguably personally identifiable information (PII) which is governed by legal requirements.

However, those manifests are being used on-board an aircraft for the purpose of flight operations. I don't think a complaint would get very far...
