Seems a sensible outcome. Taking this thread as an indicator, most people feel that 7 kg is too low and there's some logic to the argument that a 3 kg case and a 3 kg laptop leaves you with no-where to go. The lap top in the carry-on wasn't a big deal when the 7 kg limit was originally determined.
I'm with JohnK though, the enforcement of carry-on restrictions has certainly eased the over crowded locker situation.

For anyone interested, here's the new signage about carry-on allowances. It started yesterday.

I noted too that on my 737 flight which had the drop-down pivot bins, two FAs together were closing each one.

Interesting that mention of the personal item i.e. handbag or laptop in slim bag is relegated to the fine print, are they hoping most people don't see this?

I would like to know what the definition small is. I have seen female PAX drag on a couple of small wheelies and a handbag that looks to be about the same size. Now just to be fair I have also seen a number of men bring on a couple of wheelie bags and the mobile office over their shoulder.

Seems like only a few airlines define the size of the personal item. Here's a list from US carriers.
The rule seems to be that in needs to fit under the seat in front.

Sydney Plat/Gold/Business lane manned this morning by 2 Qantas Staff/ Main cabin lane nothing and some bigger bags than mine going through the Xray. Mine was 7.5kg at the kiosk weight digital unit. At Premium entry it gained .5kg. I mentioned it and shoulders were shrugged.

That's the thing isn't it? If they aren't calibrated and checked occasionally, there's going to be arguments. What if your bag suddenly weighed 10.5 kg instead? I'd definitely argue that one myself.

Was weighed for my flight from PER-MEL last Thursday, made it by .06kg! But I could take a bag out if needed. They did advise me, however, that as I was connecting to QF10, I was actually going to be way over for an international flight.

That was quite ok, but surprisingly, there was no weighing of baggage at the gate, so I didn't need to take out the camera gear after all.

In MEL this afternoon the QF baggage police were weighing bags at the priority screening area. Maybe they are checking for those with greater than 10kg. ;) Also looking for total weight over 14kg and those that fail the weight limits are being sent to check their luggage.

This has made me nervous for a MEL-AKL QF flight I have coming up. How militant are they likely to be on a J ticket?

That won’t make any difference. They don’t check the ticket before acting. And I’ve found they police the priority line worse than the general line.

I haven’t seen the bag police at international check in personally not have I seen bags being checked at international security entrance but this may have changed in the last week. I’m flying Air NZ to LA next week and will observe any shenanigans across airlines and report back

Hrmm.. its incredibly frustrating as the connecting flight with Hawaiian allows for 11.5kg, which is perfect for camera gear + scuba regs in carry on. Dont trust either of them in checked baggage.

Qantas allow 2 x small cases, each 7kg. Any chance they'll let it be if I only have 1 case thats 10.5kg?

Flying ADL-SYD earlier this week, the CSM announced he was part of the project team involved in the altered weigh allowance and he advised that, due to the 10 kg bags, FA's would no longer be able to rearrange carry on in the overhead lockers. He referred to previous injuries sustained moving heavy bags.

I am wondering if there is any recent experience with this.
As someone who normally checks everything in and just carry’s a small back back on board, I am looking to go the other way around.

I just asked at the Mel lounge for their thoughts and the response was “10kgs total”

My intention is to have 1, 55cm wheelie at 10 kg plus a small back pack 14, ish total .

MEL. SYD. JNB DUR for the first leg... (is J) but lounge attendant didn’t seem to think that changed anything. I guess it comes down to the cabin attendant on the day.

I know JT said in another thread it should be ok but I am just wondering if there is any recent info.

I think my GF will be quite happy if I just say she can take the full sized suit case. Hahah
