How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

The new domestic policy is up to 14kg which can be split in 2 bags with no item exceeding 10kg. You are also allowed a personal item, but it seems QF is almost trying to hide the personal item info on their website and I've seen cabin crew arguing with Dom J PAX about this.
If you are flying Y on the SYD-JNB, the policy is still 1 bag with a maximum weight of 7kg and a personal item, I have only seen QF weight international cabin bags once in BNE.
If your JNB-DUR is with Comair/BA you are allowed 23 kg per cabin bag.

I just asked at the Mel lounge for their thoughts and the response was “10kgs total”

My intention is to have 1 55cm wheelie at 10 kg plus a small back pack 14, ish total .

The 55cm wheelie is the problem (see https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/carry-on-baggage.html )

You can have

1 x 115cm bag = 56cm + 36cm + 23cm Up to 10kgs.

or

2 x 105cm bags = 48cm + 34cm + 23cm One piece up to 10kgs; 14kgs total.

or

1 x 105cm bag = 48cm + 34cm + 23cm + 1 x 185cm non-rigid garment bag = 60cm + 11cm + 114cm

The backpack might be pushing it as a personal item.

ANd if you are in Economy, you are still stuck with 7kg for international

UM!!!! the 14kg is only for domestic. 7kg international. Is your 23kg carry on from experience or websites? I cannot imagine what the flight would be like with 23 kg carry on unless there is a size limit! Is there a size limit? I know one European carry which has no weight limit but there is a size limit and you must be able to put the bag into the overhead locker yourself.

That’s what I thought. Up to 10kg in one cabin bag, with QF, and balance of the 14kg all-up maximum is domestic only, and does not apply to any international. No changes to international that I’ve seen.

Yes. But then I carry two bags, one with camera gear and electronics (big bag), and been weighted together, no problem for 14kg!

Sometimes I need to travel with 2 laptops - a 15inch macbook pro and a 13inch macbook pro.
The 2 laptops plus a backpack won't leave much room for more carry-ons.
Does Qantas consider the weight of laptops included as the 7kg limit or not?
I think that you will find that laptops are included in the 7 kg limit. I have had no problems flying JQ with a carry on bage and one laptop. I am usually 1 -2 kg under the 7kg limit. Careful packing and weighing BEFORE going to the airport helps!

You could carry one laptop in your main bag and one as a separate item, then it may be OK, even if your bag is at the limit. So two bags up to 14 kg plus a personal item, e.g. laptop in its own bag.

I was wondering how they interpreted this. Re the 10 vs 14 total.

I also hadn’t actually realised international was still only 7.

Oh well. This is just the way it is I suppose.
Will keep planning..!

BA allows 23kg for hand luggage and Comair is the BA carrier in South Africa, so yes that is definitely allowed. However there are size limits, so I can’t imagine how you can get to 23kg without packing gold or lead in there.

Flying ADL-SYD earlier this week, the CSM announced he was part of the project team involved in the altered weigh allowance and he advised that, due to the 10 kg bags, FA's would no longer be able to rearrange carry on in the overhead lockers. He referred to previous injuries sustained moving heavy bags.

Does not seem to be a problem for Asian airlines' flight attendants.

I don't know about you but I'm glad I live in a country that has rules in place to protect workers. I don't expect a flight attendant, Asian or otherwise, to touch my bags.
I don't think we'll ever find out the injuries sustained by Asian cabin crew.. Id hate to think!!

Wow news to me that's it 7kg on international Y. I have boarded with 3 pieces on the A380 without any issues. Store the 4 wheeler down the back cupboards on upper deck and overnighter above with the emirates F goodie bag but do not advocate this.

Have to agree. 10 kg above your head on a sustained basis is going to do damage. Didn't think about that sort of thing when I was younger but you pay the price as the years roll by.

Definitely agree with the flight attendants not having to move the bags around, I know of 2 VA crew with shoulder injuries due to repetitive lifting. As I heard a Q cabin crew member advise a passenger "if you can't lift it, it might be overweight so why should I lift it for you" fair enough I reckon
