hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Mrs BJReplay got approved, but right at the point of getting ready to set her up for Star Alliance linking to Aeroplan, it turns out that her Aeroplan account has been deactivated.

Your Aeroplan account has been deactivated. Please contact us at 1-800-361-5373 for assistance.

This has hit a few people, apparently. Not good. Not looking forward to getting her on the phone early next week to try to sort this out.
i signed up aeroplan few days ago, found out mine is deactivated too. Rang cust ser got told system did this and should send my ID to aeroplan compliance to resolve. Annoying. Has yours been resolved?

No, not yet.

It is now a week since the ID and proof of residency was sent though. There's a reddit thread where someone who works for Aeroplan answers questions, and that person reckons 2 to 4 weeks.

I'm annoyed with myself though - I thought for some reason it was $4,500 spend to earn gold, and I had my spending on both cards planned to tick over in January - both are sitting just over $4000, and the plan was to spend the remainder (each just over $500, on the remaining 1/2 payments on AirBNB, which would also enliven the insurance), and trigger Gold - potentially through to the end of 2025.

I mucked up though - the threshold is $4000, so I've trigged gold early.

I'm an idiot.

proof of residency? I thought the ID and proof of address hence drivers licence would suffice.

Time is right is awesome. If not its not end of game. Plenty of future opportunities. Keep playing

Yeah, that's apparently what they ask for - like a utility bill. Only thing in my wife's name is rates.

Licence has address as you point out, but given how slow they are, I figured providing too much rather than too little was the way to go.

You will still get time to make your selection !

Undecided, but probably not.
Main thing was to get Gold from 1 Jan which should last through all 2025 with Air Canada.

It's not clear if the status gets cancelled the moment the card gets cancelled.

Air Canada seems to offer the best chance of long status and 50,000 bonus miles.

Reading the terms and conditions it indicated status would end immediately the card is cancelled.

So unless you were willing to fork out the $450, status will only be for a year.

the 50k miles are sweet… but the star gold is of little use to me if in a premium cabin anyway… although for the likes of SAS, Lufthansa, and EVA, the star gold lounge is better than the business lounge. Not worth $450, which could buy me another 25k aeroplan points… probably more than I’ll earn on the card.

The status gets canceled as soon as card is cancelled . Confirmed reports .

Yeah, that's my expectation.

I think that there is a way around that, but I am not about to detail that here...
Not worth $450,
I tend to agree.

However, what I haven't yet done, but will, is compare, in detail, the T&Cs of my current preferred travel insurance, CBA ultimate included insurance, and HSBC included insurance.

At first glance, the HSBC included insurance is very good. Activation only requires spending $500 of pre-paid expenses. It also includes domestic insurance.

If the comparison stacks up, $450 is very cheap for an annual TI policy.

$450 is a fair price… but my ANZ card is just $79 annual fee for the same insurance, and only $250 to activate.

I’ll give the card a go for a year, see how the points earning stacks up.

let us posted how you go.

I wonder what is the impact on accruing star alliance points whilist Aeroplan conducting their review of the issue. The Aeroplan account would not be in open or in“good standing”. Their T&C has given them absolute power to do any they deem approprioriate. Its tricky to deal with foreign companies.

Yeah, will do.

I've got to double check - I have until the 9th of Dec to nominate or re-nominate for Mrs BJReplay. It is possible that we haven't yet nominated the status/earn airline for her, yet. Which might be good, because at least points won't be potentially lost, but 50,000 bonus points are worth a lot.

I got star alliance to de-link aeroplan until its fixed. otherwise this card has no value to me unfortunately. Agree, as least the points are siting with star for now.

Had this card for nearly 2 months, met the spend in the fist 10 days. Has anyone got the 50,000 aeroplan points yet? Still waiting...

Question… did some transactions on the new card… they have hit the account (no longer ‘pending’)… what happens now? I haven’t reached the $4000 spend yet, but when and how do the points hit my generic star alliance account? Is that automatic, and when does the transfer happen? Is it daily or weekly?

HSBC sweeps my card (not the *A one, mind you) to the rewards proram / QFF with each new statement
