hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Heard an interesting one on another forum-
Someone being denied their gold status unless they took a flight within 3 months first, with KF. Very bizarre, not sure what to make of it.

That is odd.

Wonder if they got their status matches mixed up? There are some that require a round trip on SQ.

Or maybe the KF agent was unfamiliar with HSBC?

They seemed to get an email direct from star saying there were issues processing the gold. Very odd

If that came from the SQ call centre, then I’m not overly surprised.

Just got approved for the card, as a retiree, and experience pretty much mirrored what has been told here.

In my case, I make ad-hoc withdrawals from my SMSF for living expenses - basically to pay off my existing 2 cards monthly. I got my accountant to provide a letter saying that my annual withdrawals exceeded the min income required over the past 4 years to 6/2023 and the balance of my SMSF had remained static.

Submitted on-line. As HSBC don't exist in Tas, went into a branch in Brisbane while I was there and they accepted an image I have of my passport photo page as ID, as I had forgotten to take it with me.

Couple of days later I got a call basically wanting me to confirm my particular arrangements.

Couple of days later got a call asking me to send bank statements showing payments IN from my SMSF 7/23 to present. Strangely, they didn't ask to see the balance of my SMSF - so as far as they knew, I might have drained it!.

Approved the next day. A little bit tedious, but I'm impressed overall.

Got my email about 5 days ago saying they’d renewed my AC status (this was 14 days after the “select your airline” renewal email). Still showing 31/12/24 for expiry.

I couldn't see any reason why it wouldn't.

Another retiree that has just been approved. I just upped my super payments to get above the salary and now will reduce them again.

I sent an extract of the last six months super payments and they wanted to see all transactions for the last three months which I wasn't that happy about but as soon as I sent them I got confirmation of approval within about 10 minutes.

This morning I got this.

Does anyone have any suggestions which Alliance to join - I was thinking Singapore

I would think it depends on whether you use Aeroplan to buy miles or not. Singapore gives you free luggage and lounge access on Virgin Australia flights Aeroplan only lounge access

Agree. SQ points expire. Awards aren’t cheap.

Aeroplan gives you two years (well might be shorter if joining in December?) Plus has excellent, cheap awards.

Thanks - my Aeroplan account is currently locked out so I'd best get that sorted.

Bugger. They can take months; we escalated by saying that we had a choice - flying United or Air Canada, and unless they could unlock the account more quickly than six months (which was what the initial quote was), we'd be flying United.

They managed to get things sorted more quickly.

It appears that if your name matches someone who has an Aeroplan account and an address in Canada, the lock your account, and make you jump through hoops - slowly - to get it unlocked.

I can't say I'm enjoying my interaction with HSBC. They have somehow pulled out details from a card that was cancelled in 2015 with old home and work numbers and you can't change it online and they wanted to know what the numbers were before they could change them.

They are sending emails to my old and new email address. I don't like their app or their website much either.

Rant over
