Hula hoop as carry on?

Hello. I'm going from Dallas to Melbourne on quantas. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried bringing a travel hula hoop with them? It's collapsable, and coils down to 20" accross. I've had a friend take hers on domestic flights, by just hooping it over her backpack carryon and velcroing it at the top. I know it meets the size and weight requirements, but will I have to pay extra since it won't fit IN the bag?

I'd put in booked luggage. You're not going to need it on board so don't tempt fate.

Could provide some drama with security and also the CSM might say it is to big even though it folds down.

I would book in as checked luggage.

I have seen one of these onboard a domestic QF flight, but it wasn't collapsible. It ended up in a closet because it wasn't going to fit anywhere else.
