Can't believe I'm about to rant about my iPhone 4...it's on the way out after only 18 months

Started to fail a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Sure I knew I had a lot of photos and videos, but with an AFF'er help, I offloaded most of them to Picassa. So after every day, I'd do a full turn off and let it sit to see if it would work itself out. Now it's litany of fails including not letting me open:

App Store
Camera (still comes up with "Cannot Take Photo: There is not enough disk space to continue taking photos. Please make room by deleting videos or photos")
Facebook
Phone
Mail (although in the past week, it shows the last screen for a second, then flicks me back to Home)

At least it lets me open (sometimes):
Contacts
Messages

THANK GOD it's letting me into AFF and Zynga Poker apps, otherwise I'd have chucked it in a bin!

It is also not powering down automatically (after coming back to front screen or even when in an App and has maxed the time I set through Settings), thus going through battery life like a leech.

Then I try to book an appointment this morning through the Genius Bar - well what bloody Genius made the area where the available stores sit there and say "loading stores" without actually loading them . No bloody genius at work there:rolleyes:...

There, now my rant is over...and I feel a little better . Bloody technology ....

That's no good, sounds like it might be worth doing a factory reset or at the very least doing a backup/restore with itunes if you can? I have had my iPhone 4 for nearly 2 years, admittedly I am on my 3rd as I had some issues in the warranty period but that was kind of my fault!

Or hopefully you can book a genius appointment and I'm sure they will get it sorted..worst case if its hardware you might be up for a replacement for ~$200 but it sounds more software related.

Thanks for the words of support, netgrom. Thankfully was able to do a back-up through iTunes about 2 weeks ago, will try and see if it lets me do another - but only want to do it once; just before I go to the Genius appointment.

Sometimes a back up then do a software upgrade and then re load all the data back on to it can fix it up.

Depends who your carrier is they will have an ETC that you can pay and get another new phone.

There is regular updates for the phones.

We have had a few come back with some strange faults.

We then advise the customer to do a back up and then do software upgrade and all is fixed

Lindsay, how much spare space do you have on the iPhone at the moment? I.e., have you deleted any of the photos that you transferred to Picasa from the iPhone? If there's no free space on the phone, willing to bet that that's a big part of the problem - Apple operating systems start behaving like a complete dog when there's no space available.

Other than that, I second netgroms advice - make sure all your photos are transferred to Picasa, do a back up in iTunes and then restore from back up (also using iTunes). Doing so has fixed wonky iPhones for me before, and providing you're all backed up you have nothing apart from time to lose by trying :)

I notice that LW's text messages do not go through as iMessages which I believe they should if the software is up to date.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are mad at the Iphone because you depend on it so much.

I can't live without my Iphone, best invention since sliced bread.

What I love about my Iphone.
I don't have to be in the office to get my emails,
A great place for storing lots of photos.
The new Imessage feature is great.
Facetime is gimmicky but a lot of fun to use.
I can get in contact with a lot of people anywhere I am.
Safari is a decent web browser maybe not the best but it suits my needs, I can check the web pretty much anywhere in the world.
Some of the apps are great, AFF for one, plus Tripit, Skype, Flightboard, plus a whole lot more.
Ok so I am a little bit addicted to Facebook, but means you can keep in contact with a lot of people, and my Facebook friends can get in contact with me even if they don't have my phone number or email address.
I could go on.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You're absolutely right - Lindsay, update the software for your phone! :p Click the Check for Update button in iTunes to get it .. fixes a bunch of problems, which may help you as well :)

But, but. Apple is awesome. It must just be you lindsay. Lol.

Id try a different browser or computer to book your appointment. Sounds like a browser issue.

Otherwise all of the info in this thread looks good. Backup, software upgrade and restore should fix most glitches like yours.

Also, once you're onto iOS 5 you'll at least be able to offload essential backups to iCloud and do over the air updates, so not have to worry about hooking it up and syncing to your computer as often.

Be careful with using iCloud if you are using the mobile network as you can go over your data limit very easily.

Try and use Wi fi as much as possible.

Okay, I have tried to follow all the experts advise, but still have a fail. But firstly let me backtrack.

I had 1,700 photos and movies in there before notzac' assistance. Now I have only about 300 and the movies after the Picassa transfer. All of these phoros and movies are the kids and my travel photos. But it doesn't look like the phone has recognised that they have been downloaded, as when looking at my iPhone under the "Capacity" area, it still has only 0.1Gb free (still saying 12Gb photo storage, Apps 1.56Gb, Audio 0.01Gb, Other 0.46Gb).

I tried to sync but it has come up that it needs 1Mb of space to continue (IIRC).

Do I need to jettison some apps or similar to be able to have enough space to upload the upgrade?

Oooh, it let me into Photo, but is now trying to update Library - it has failed previously when attempting this.

Maybe I am one of these people who (like the joke goes) should put it back in the case and give it back to the store where I bought it :o :(

Typically when you sync with a photo program like Picasa, it won't delete the photos on the iPhone unless you specifically tell it to. I'd triple-check that you've definitely got all the photos stored on your computer in Picasa, then use the Photos app on the iPhone to delete the copy on the iPhone... once you've deleted them, the upgrade will probably work. :)

You two are presuming that I actually know how to do those step :o

notzac, information in my previous message.

No, you are correct - not upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 or whatever it is...but need to sync first.

Do not give up,

I would suggest you delete some of the apps, you can still add them later through your Itunes account.

My latest issues on my 18 month old iPhone have only started since I did the software update (they started in the betas and continued into the releases).

On the weekend, taking photos, it was not showing any images. i'd see a black screen and nothing else. Also, every other time I open settings, it crashes, and just about every other app freezes regularly.

Either it's had a few too many drops, or Apple are building in bugs to force me to upgrade to the new iPhone when it's announced/released :S

(I've regularly threatened to throw this piece of junk against the wall the past few months!)

Hmm, how long will that take me to work out :o

Pretty sure I toggled one of the drop down boxes at the bottom of the Picassa screen, asking them to delete from iPhone. cough, this is just too difficult for me ---- aaghhhh, I think I'm going to have some lunch and do some work instead

Thank God, somebody I know, who's in the know, yet still is able to experience my kind of problems.

Make an appt at genius bar and take your computer and the phone and let them sort it out.

I have one client who did that.

I have a staff member who has done the I phone expert training course.
