At my work, we're using a wide range of languages, ASP.Net, Java, a bit of COBOL here and there for good measure ... ;) and probably other languages or setups that I don't know about.

Anat0l, I don't know if you're wanting to leave the uni environment at some point (and I'm not even exactly sure whether you're a postgrad student, researcher or what), but an understanding of mining and coding skills would be useful in the companies that making mining software - Gemcomm, Mincom, Maptek, Runge, etc.

As a software engineer, I can't think of anything worse than writing GUI apps for Windows. I'm glad there are others out there who feel differently so I don't have to do it!

I find it sad that 90% of the work these days seems to be making websites and/or databases.
 
Implicitness is inherently evil, and here's the reason why.

Strong typing was only briefly popular compared to dynamic typing. The latter still dominates the popular languages, although I'm not a big fan of it either. (Then again, I'm a strong advocate for OO and Design by Contract).

You could always give the argument, "There are no stupid languages, only stupid programmers".

String typing was advocated by those folk that got burned in C :). They argue against Duck Typing as well.....
