Ibis Styles Auckland - AKA the dog box

As part of my trip across the ditch was wanted a reasonable accommodation option downtown that won't break the bank. Thanks to a recent promo that will see me score close to 200 Euro worth of points from Accor after three stays, the Ibis Styles at $90 NZ won the vote. I also have an Ibis Business Card that gets me 10% off which helps.

I was somewhat intrigued by the room description:

Inviting and comfortable, the 12m2 Studio Room offers all you need for a great stay, including a double bed, a balcony, ensuite bathroom, broadband Internet access, a fridge, cooktop and microwave. Up to 2 adults. No rollaway.

Hmm, 12 square metres yet inviting and comfortable, must be a typo (the size that is).
And so I booked it, how bad could it be???

The hotel is well located in the middle of town, nearest stop is stop 4 for the airport bus.

Checkin was nice and quick, the room was prepaid so a $50 preauth was taken from the credit card. The lift requires a room key for any floor including ground which was a bit weird. There is no room service and only a basic breakfast is offered on the premises, given the location not a big deal.

I was given a high floor room, which turned out to be very quiet in terms of hearing what was happening in other rooms, but the city noise was a different story.

As it turned out, 12 square metres was accurate. As you can see from the room, I needed a drink. As there is not room for a side table and your luggage, fortunately one replaced the other, with my bag being a nice place to perch the glass. I also ventured onto the balcony, well my foot did.

After a good walk around town and dinner at the Federal Deli which is just a block away, I retired for the night. With a 0630 flight and a bus to catch, I knew it was going to be an early start.
I did not use the ear plugs and certainly did not hear any human noise during the night, however the wind and rain certainly made their presence felt. Overall it was a reasonable sleep all things considered, and the shower in the morning was hot and good pressure. Checkout was quick and easy, I was soon on my way.

Summary
The Ibis Styles won't win any awards for style or space, its a dog box that is good for sleeping and accessing the city, but I doubt it would be much fun for anything longer than a night, despite the in room cooking facilities including a hot plate and microwave. Value for money, OK.

Stayed there a couple of years ago, it was cheap and centrally located, my only complaint was that there was only 1 lift working which meant some long waits.

I stayed there ONCE when it was (IIRC) an 'All Seasons' - using a 'hot deal'.

I was an Accor dude back then but strangely could not get to my normal haunt at a reasonable cost those days being the Mercure Windsor.

Not much seems to have changed - although for me it was much nosier - I arrived late about the same time as the myriad of fans from an AC/DC concert were heading back to their rooms (that explained the lack of reasonably priced accomodation) - the city was jumping that night.

Oh.. ummm. Hmmm. It looks like a council flat from the 80s. And the post with the red bed spread... bow chicka bow wow, although if your aim was good, you could hit the toilet bowl from the bed I see.

With room rate and bus shuttle, how much did you end up spending compared to a airport hotel like the Novotel?

It was half the price of the Novotel, just over $100AUD including the bus.
