If JQ get the 787 before QF will you walk?

To say it has less room than a 767 or is cramped/uncomfortable is, imho, simply untrue.

If they fit it out 3-3-3 I'd prefer to fly 767. For DOM flights I will search for a 767 over a 737 every time. The age/model has no impact on me....for me, it's all about the layout & avoiding the horrid 3 seat plan.

As for 'walking', is the OP Serious? I doubt 99% of flyers even have a clue as to what aircraft they're flying on.

I've actively walked away from QF in the past. Nothing to do with the type/model of the AC but, how the thing has been fitted out......I have directed my money away from skybed Mk1 flights for a few good years in favour of fully flat J beds.

I have taken this view as a general flyer with very basic knowledge on all things aviation - I.E. well before I joined or even knew what AFF or FT were!

If Qantas thinks QFF's will remain loyal to the Qantas Group, and simply select J* instead of QF, I think this assumption will be the nail in the coffin for Qantas.

It would take me 7 days and 23 hours to walk to my office in MEL from my house in [insert suburb here] - so no I won't be walking.

Personally I make rational choices about with whom I fly rather than spit the dummy if I don't get what I want.

Most people have no idea what the aircraft is when they book or when they fly: big (2 aisle) or small (1 aisle) is a close as it gets. Many do not know if aircraft has 2, 3 or 4 engines.
Here on AFF we notice, but most pax do not.

Never has truer words been spoken. I find it kind of interesting that QF spent so much time advertising it's Airbus A380 product referencing the aircraft type specifically. Most other airline advertisements I've seen whilst sure, they show their flagship type (Typically their largest type), they make little mention of the types of aircraft which the airline flies or if they do it's in passing only.

If QF could get a corporate logo onto a piece of air-borne straw, they'd be clutching at that too given their state at the moment.

I cannot see the A330s getting much of a refurb as its domestic they are slated for.

They can't bring these old A332's back with no AVOD and 3-3-3 J - it will kill them against VA. Remember the EBO/EBP fiasco. Perceptions are everything.

I didn't ask what "99% of flyers" would do. I asked what the members here would do, and I assumed 99% of AFF members know what aircraft they are on and the history of QF / JQ re: the 787.

In the context of this query, the 787 isn't just a stylish new aircraft on the outside.

The question goes to the space, comfort, amenities, IFE etc etc that a new aircraft type will have over 763's sporting a 1980/90 interior.

Dont think they have a choice, the Webber PE seats are the only option now that seating rules have changed AFAIK, at least the only option from the current fleet, so its either leave it or make it a EBO/P clone.

pereceptions everything but given the width of a 787 (extra 20-25cm or so compared to A330) I suspect most operators on regional (which on distance would include Aussie domestic) will be running 2x3x2 in J, with only the long-haul lie-flats in staggered configs retaining aisle access.
And definitely expecting 3x3x3 down the back to be standard.

Whilst I agree QF got a -ve reception with EBO/EBP, DJ also rolled out XFA/XFB in 2x3x2.
Afterall the middle seat is the same as a window, one person to climb over to get to the aisle - you just have a choice of which way.

markis10 - do you mean Weber PE is only choice on 787 or on revamped 330s.
If on 787 - well isnt ANA running 2x2x2 for shorthaul, and if 330s how is DJ getting 2x2x2 on XFC

No... I won't leave QF if JQ gets the 787 first.

Don't get me wrong, when it happens I am looking forwards to my first B787 flight, but ultimately the thing that will make me chose one carrier over another are the things which make up the experience (eg the AVOD, decent meal, decent space for the chosen class, FA's who actually want to be there, lounge access etc)

What seating rules have resulted in the Webber PE seats being the only J option?

This seems a crazy move when VA are bringing in Skybed Mk I equivalents on their A332's?

EBO/P are superb aircraft in whY and the PE seat in J is actually quite comfortable; but the 2-3-2 layout and the fact the seat back ends up in your lap when then person in front of you reclines, plus having the AVOD screen on the seat back (thus havin to adjust it 100 times a flight as the person in-front reclines / un-reclines / reclines) makes these two stand out and substandard J in the QF fleet.

Ps: would anyone consider a 2-3-2 J and 2-4-2 whY with no personal AVOD on an ex JQ A332 an improvement over a 2-2-2 J and 2-3-2 whY 767?

The FAA has mandated new crash ratings of 16g for all seats as well as foam changes etc, this means older designs cannot be refitted to existing aircraft.

The millennium seats stay or they go to the recaro in the same config AFAIK, as the alternative is a new version of the millennium, the B/ E Spectrum PE seat.

While the 787 has its appeal being new and exciting. I fly a lot in Y long haul, and a wide body with 2-x-2 is my preference, over 3-x-3. I'm a window person and trying to get past 2 people on an overnight flight is a challenge.

For Dom short-haul well, it short so plane type is not the end of the world.

They don't have 3-3-3 in J.

The newer JQ birds (i.e the ones after EBJ) are an exact match to the current EBO/P.
However one thing EBK prior have is 2D;)

Yes the 330's will probably come back, but it is just speculation as to what happens with them when they return.

As for the DJ/VA argument about putting Skybeds into their 330's, that is a moot point as the early JQ ones can not handle them fullstop.

If you're a J passenger: no
If you're a Y passenger: no
If you are a QF accountant: yes

Goes to my point that the ex-JQ A330's are no improvement to the current 767's at all, except for fuel efficiency. But as the discussion is really about the 787-8 and 787-9, whether its in JQ paint or QF paint - its all really about what the 787 is replacing.

If the 787-8 is replacing JQ A332s then its a marginal to none improvement for PAX as Starclass goes from 2-3-2 abreast to 2-3-2 abreast and Y goes from 2-4-2 to 3-3-3.

If the 787-9 is replacing QF 767's/A332/A333's eventually then obviously it depends on the exact aircraft config. I don't even see the 787 as a huge improvement over the refurbed 747 either....

Most the fleet re-arrangements such as retirement of B767's, redeployment of A330s and 787-8's to JQ are about fuel efficiency and running costs, not about giving passengers a better experience. Obviously the 787 has some nice things about it like the pressurization, larger windows, new interior etc but I think all that will be spoiled by 2-3-2 in J and 3-3-3 in Y with reduced seat pitches if anything.

Or they create a new seat entirely - assuming they are serious about not losing J pax to VA 332's?

Walk? To where? JQ? No thanks. Unfortunately whichever way you look at it, well for me anyway, Qantas is the better alternative.

What about QF domestic which is where the 787 fleet is essential (to retire the 763's)?
Why retire the 763's? How about retiring some of the 734's and 738's first?

If I had a choice I would take a 763 over a 734 or 738 anyday but it would appear that Qantas has replaced a lot of the flights that used to be 763 on SYD-BNE and vv with more 734's and 738's. No idea where the 763's have gone but I for one would love them back....
