I ask because I can't find mine!
I put it somewhere safe when I moved (like the topic suggests), but I can't think where that could be. I have looked in all the usual places you might think of - scarf draw, jewellery case, spare bags, desk etc.
Open to suggestions, even crazy ones - I found my keys in the freezer once, so right now anything is possible.

One of my ex-flatmates in the UK kept his passport between two books in the bookshelf - the idea that nobody would look for it there, and it would be safe.

He calls me up in a tizz one day wanting the PP number and details for a work trip he was booking. Sure enough, even with about 5 mins instructions it still took another 10 mins to find!

Have you thought of looking in a box of random papers that you have somewhere? It's the sort of place I would expect a passport to live.

I had a similar issues at Christmas, after my last international trip about 3 months earlier. I usually keep my passport in my wardrobe with other personal stuff, in a certain spot, and it wasn’t there. Took me forever to work out that I’d come back from a cold place, so was wearing a leather jacket, which I wouldn’t be wearing in summer… and sure enough in the inside breast pocket was my passport.

So, when did you last use it, was it cold or hot? :p

What carryon luggage did you have with you on your last trip? Did you have a ticket wallet for all your documents you might have put it in?

It's not in your laptop carry case anywhere is it? That's where I found mine eventually about 10 years back however I'd already replaced the 'lost' passport by then.

From now on I always put in back in exactly the same spot each time after use in case I forget.

I did that! After a 40 minute journey to work and back and ransacking all of the drawers in the house it finally dawned on me! :)

Thanks for the suggestions.
I haven't used it since I moved, and I was holding it when I moved and remember thinking "I need to put this somewhere safe."
Maybe a little too safe.
Looking through loose papers and my spare portfolio now. Checked jackets already even though I knew it wouldn't be there.
PS. It isn't in the fridge or freezer - I looked there.

... and while we're on the hunt for things, has anyone seen my Medibank Private card? I needed it today (eye check, new glasses) and after ransacking my wallet realised it wasn't in there.

Need to find it before I pick up my glasses ... It's probably a $300-$400 difference in price.

You will find it in the last place you look.:p
Mine is usually in the plastic document folder in the draw beside my bed.

I am a fan of the bookcase... or alternatively my filing cabinet (under "P", obviously!). The travel bag is also common if I forget to put it back to the 'safe place' :)

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

When i moved house a month and half before flying to Europe last year i put my passport in a bag seperate with other travel stuff so as to be sure not to lose it, then promptly forgot where i put it... Things were getting desperate with only three-four days days before flying out and a day or so before having to make a last ditch request to DFAT for anew passport ($150 or so) when i was looking through a box in the shed and have a guess what was in the top of a box near the top of the pile...

Very relieved!!!!

A couple of hundred dollars buys a little "fire-proof" safe from Officeworks that you can put at the bottom of a cupboard to keep passports and all other such stuff in. It may not really be all that fire-proof and someone could steal it (if they were strong) by just hefting it up and carrying it out, but at least you'll never forget where it is!

Well that is logical, I mean why would you continue looking once you found it? :p

Do you have a round the neck thing you put it in? Is there a storage area that you just toss stuff? I found a missing GPS unit in my place like this recently after turning the house upside down.

Hope you find it soon.

Should we all go round to Tae's place before drinks tomorrow night to find your passport.

Glad someone commented.

Indeed!!!!!

Bunnings sell cheap safe's, from memory for about $50

Can bolt it to the floor, and it's not fire proof, but it's a good safe spot and it's hidden in my house where you wouldn't expect a safe to be :)

Have had it for 4 years so far, and only thing I have had to do is replace the batteries as it's a keypad code safe :)

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

I have lost count of the number of times I have lost things I have put away for safe keeping. Some turn up years later and some are never seen again. :(

You will find it in the last place you look.:p
How about if you can't find it and give up looking? :p

Mine is usually in the plastic document folder in the draw beside my bed.
My mother is back in charge of my passport. When I get home I ask her to put it away and check if it is still there about 2 weeks before I am due to leave.

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

Last time I couldn't find my passport I got to the stage of completing a replacement passport application form. Just the thought of having to pay extra for not providing my old (by then expired) passport was enough for my brain to conjour it up.

Maybe try filling out the form for therapy.

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

I continue to look in vain. Problem is, my birth certificate extract is somewhere in storage (also from the move). I thought I could just do an expidited one and still make my Easter plans work, but now I am not so sure.
I was going to rip my room apart but am way too tired. #sadpanda
In the morning I am going to look in my car... no idea why it would be there, but heck - running out of places to look. Thanks for the ideas and support folks.

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

I assume you've already checked the baggage you used for your last trip?
This is where I usually find mine, if I haven't put it back in it's 'home' - the shoebox full of boarding passes and train tickets from previous journeys.
Also, things have a weird way of showing up in my car glovebox. I think because it has that illusion of safety and security? haha:lol:

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

I, probably irresponsibly, usually just leave mine on the bedside table and as such would suggest looking through current and old reading material.
Other than that it's turned up with my "next time" foreign currency stash, with my foreign public transport smart cards and with some collections of tickets/souvenirs from previous trips before as well...:-|

Good luck!

Re: If you were Tae's passport she put somewhere safe when she moved, where would you

Still up and looking at 12.10pm.
I have to book and pay tomorrow during LAN call centre hours if I want all flights on the same ticket.
I can head into the office a litte later (ie 8am) but right now I can't sit still.
