IHG Hotels that recognise status

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Canberra
When: July 18-19
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR RATE (the flexible one)
Booked: 1 King Bed Standard City View
Received: 1 King 1 Bedroom Suite Jetted Bath (Park View)

Called in the morning and was told room ready, so checked in 4 hours early - nice. Suite is big(?) with 2x singles and 1x king. Drinks vouchers or points offered - the vouchers say house red/white or beer, but Mum managed to wrangle a sparkling.

The property is definitely showing its age - the "jetted bath" a little grimy. Nice views over Glebe park though.

Hotel: Holiday Inn Express Nürnberg
When: July
Status: Diamond Amb
Rate: E89 (+E6 parking)

Excellent family hotel - usual HIX size, new-build, couch bed big enough for two medium sized children. Quiet and convenient. Parking on-site. Adjacent (non-affiliated) restaurant (cafe/bakery) an excellent family dinner option with pizza, pasta etc. In-house breakfast buffet excellent - probably amongst the best HIX breakfast's I've experienced. Staff friendly. Easy drive back into old town (~ 15 mins) and easily accessible off autobahn having driven in from elsewhere. Would 100% stay there again if visiting Nürnberg.

Edit: forgot to add, has a pretty decent sized self-serve (and free!) laundry in the basement, so if staying there mid-trip, a good place to do laundry!

Holiday Inn Munich City-Centre
When: July 2022
Status: Diamond Amb
Rate: ~ E750 for three nights in King Bed+Premium Sofa bed incl breakfast.

Good location - easy walking everywhere. Roadworks nearby currently made car-access mildly difficult (bridge works - will take a while to complete I suspect). Good nearby restaurants and an excellent gelato shop just around the corner. Easy access to S barn station nearby. DM, supermarket etc nearby. Room as booked - living area converted to large (queen size!) sofa bed. Separate main bedroom. Newly renovated bathroom. Staff friendly. Looks like it gets significant numbers of tour groups - often buses parked out front and met a couple of guests from tour groups. Large hot and cold breakfast buffet with wide selections. Has conference centre (not inspected). Would 100% stay again.

Property: voco Kirkton Park Hunter Valley
Dates: Jul 16-18 (2 nights)
Status: IHG Diamond Elite Ambassador
Rate: IHG Rewards Advanced Breakfast @ avg $640 p/n
Booked: Manor Suite
Received: Manor Suite

First stay at a voco hotel, and my first stay since the new IHG benefits came online. We were pretty impressed with this property, overall, except for a few niggles here and there. No upgrade available to a room type we'd have wanted. There was a bigger suite, and I have a feeling it was ours if we desired, but as it was an open plan suite and didn't have the separate bedroom we prefer, it wasn't good for us with our little master in tow.

The property was previously a Sebel, and reopened after a refresh and rebrand under IHG about 3 years ago. Location is reasonably central in Pokolbin, about 10-15 mins from most anything in the Hunter, or the town of Cessnock, for a bigger range of supplies. Design and décor I'm told is 'country vogue', but with most of the mod cons you'd be looking for, as well. It's all done very nicely.

Recognised at check-in with thanks and my choice of benefits. Offered b'fast as one of these, though included in the rate. Discarded the $1 worth of free points and opted for a couple of drink vouchers instead (which I found in my wallet today - oops). Given local gift of a jar of chilli salt at check-in, and in the room there was a letter, and a bottle of decent shiraz (of another state's origin!) and a small jar of honey, produced on-property. Late check out to 4PM given, though we didn't need it past 12PM on this occasion.

The Manor Suite was very nice, feeling larger than it's noted 40 SqM, with high ceilings, and with an amazing outlook over the property and Broken Back Range. Large balcony area off the lounge overlooks the Manor House garden area below, and was great for the sunset view with a glass of champagne or can of Hope Brewery Double West Coast IPA (which is my preferred bubbles!). Small, period bathroom was ok, however with a shower over the bath and water that was weak and impossible to get to the right temp, somewhat annoying. Nice big TVs in both the living room and bedroom, but neither had options for streaming or to cast to, and no connections in for a laptop or device. The rooms in the Manor House were all occupied, and there was quite a bit of noise that came in from adjoining rooms and balconies, together with the large common foyer entry to the house that some used as a meeting place. Most seemed to have kids with them, and so all had quieted down by 8:30-9PM or thereabouts, so that was some relief.

Food was of a high standard, though pretty simple.
Service attentive, and staff friendly in all areas.

I'd maybe reconsider the timing of another visit, ours coinciding with NSW school holidays and the big winter family event at the Hunter Valley Gardens (absolute mayhem out there, it was!), but we'd happily go back. Tough call vs the Crowne Plaza up there, where we are always treated really well and has the better amenities... but for a proper getaway - especially sans kids - this one edges it.

Some pics inserted below (full disclosure, the 1st one is nicked from IHG, but everything looks just as it does there).

EDIT: to add - that couch in the loungeroom is a double sofa bed, if that's helpful to any!

Cheers,
Matt.

Holiday Inn Express Karlsruhe
When: July 2022
Status: Diamond Amb
Rate: ~E450 for 4 nights (THursday and SUnday notably more expensive than Friday/Saturday)
Parking: on-site additional cost but the adjacent street has nil restrictions, and we had no issues getting a free park coming and going arch day and night.

We chose this property as we were attending a wedding in Karlsruhe, and it was located easily to get the the wedding couple’s home outside Karlsruhe (10 min drive). It was about a 20min walk to the main downtown shopping area, but closer to the main train station. There are also plentiful tram options if you don’t want to walk (weather / other). There are a couple of restaurants nearby albeit about 5-10 min walk. A DM and Supermarket also 5 min and 10min away. Nice park also to walk along towards city. The whole city is very flat so a bike would also be a good option. Nearby sports facilities also (7 min drive).

A bit underwhelming to arrive to a HIX having just been at a decent HI, but in the end we were hardly at the hotel. THe fold out bed notably smaller (more a small twin size) - our kids managed - just. Luggage storage the main issue although we decided best approach was to repack everything going to Aus and just leave available what was needed for our last few days. Modest amount but just enough hanging space (for wedding clothes etc), additional wall hooks helpful also in this regard. 24hr bar menu - basically food was pizza (choice of ~ 5) or crisps/nuts. THe pizza tasted decent when immediately arriving, but pretty quickly turned to cardboard. Given it was relatively late and we didn’t want to have to drag the kids out for protracted dinner (merely top up the junk they’d already eaten), it was ok. Decent spirit selection although beer choices limited. Breakfast selection looked average but in the end none of us went hungry and getting a table was easy, although i feel they probably needed to refresh it a bit more during the breakfast window - we were much later than usual to breakfast on the Sunday morning and it was clearly busy and some items hadn’t been replaced (eg. croissants). We stil found enough to eat, but there were less options.

Karlsruhe isn’t a typical tourist town and this hotel reflects that - appears their major clientele is travelling business people, hence the higher mid-week rates. So the simple offering probably works and if i was travelling alone would be perfectly adequate. As a holiday hotel for a family, the HIX Nurnberg was significantly better despite the room being almost identical in size but a better fold out and a better overall ambiance in the common areas.

Given the specifics of location requirement for us, this was perfect, but otherwise I’d probably look for another option if staying longer / expecting any more time in the hotel / wanting a more upmarket experience (yes I know it’s a HIX!). They could do a lot to make this place more inviting with a subtle improvement in the breakfast offering, and/or a 24hr (or even to 8pm) coffee/tea machine (its sitting there just not on). It’s run lean like many HIX (mostly only one staff for long periods, with bursts of additional cleaning/breakfast staff only), and despite booking for 2+2 I had to a number of times ask for 4 towels (they kept leaving three incl at initial setup). Always done happily, but something fairly simple - suspect 4 is a rare number in one room for them.

Super high quality review!

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Perth
When: 28-29 July
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR ADVANCE
Booked: Queen Premium
Received: Standard Balcony River View

Arrived quite late ~1am and just keen to get to room but in hindsight, none of the usual acknowledgment of status, no welcome amenity offered (nor received so far).

Pre-Covid, I’d stay there on average once per month. Always some sort of upgrade (like this time), but normally a bottle of wine and card waiting in the room.

This was my first time back since mid-2019 and probably my last. The place is looking very tired. It was approaching “knock down, rebuild” phase before Covid and hasn't improved. I’m no longer travelling to Perth for work, so if I were to return soon, there are newer and nicer places around.

I got one of those post visit survey emails and reported as I saw it - including no offer of amenity etc.

Within minutes of submitting, I received an email confirming 600 pts “Welcome Amenity”. Coincidence?

Bunch of properties in the past week or so:

Hotel: Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport
When: 24/7-25/7
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR ADVANCE
Booked: Queen Bed Standard Room
Received: Queen Bed Standard Room (as far as I know) on high floor, far from lift, as requested.

No late or early check in/out as I arrived at 10pm and left at 5am. Nice enough room but no runway view (not sure if there is one?). 500 points amenity. 10 minute walk through the carpark from the airport. Definitely paying for location here.

Hotel: Voco Auckland City Centre
When: 25/7-27/7
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR ADVANCE
Booked: King Bed Standard
Received: King Bed Standard Bay View

Definitely a nice view and one of the taller buildings in the city (room was on 32 iirc). The top half of the building is the Voco and the bottom is a HI. Asked about a suite upgrade but no dice - "sorry sir, you've already received an upgrade," though they were still selling suites for that night online. The sparkling water amenity is really nice, I wish CP would do this instead of giving you 4x plastic bottles of water. New property so looked pretty good. 600 points amenity. Other points haven't shown up yet so I may have to chase the booking up.

And 4x nights in SIN with the 100% bonus on purchased points - $740USD for 148 000 points which saved me about $400 over the four nights as opposed to booking flexi rates - though obviously received no points for the stays.

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Changi Airport
When: 28/7-29/7
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR REWARD - 36 000 points for one night
Booked: King Bed Standard Jewel Wing
Received: King Bed Standard (apparently an upgrade as the room is 8m2 larger than the Jewel Wing standard rooms)

1200 points amenity (600x2 for some reason)

Hotel: Intercontinental Robertson Quay (Singapore)
When: 29/7-31/7
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR REWARD - 40 000 + 42 000 points for two nights.
Booked: King Bed Classic
Received: King Bed Classic

No upgrade (though I'm not sure if I asked about it) or comped club access. Definitely a cut above the CP Changi service and looks-wise and the room feels reasonably big - I think I saw a post on here or FT about how they were designed well in that respect. I arrived at 9 or 10am and my room wasn't ready, but they held my bags and called at 12pm to tell me it was (3 hours early check in). 2pm late check out also provided. I ordered room service once which was ~$60 for a pretty great pizza and pork meatballs with good bread - similar if not lower prices to some restaurants near by, though obviously way better value to just go to a hawker centre. My biggest gripe with the property was that it wasn't closer to an MRT station (Fort Canning is a ~10m walk, so it's really not too bad). 600 points amenity.

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Changi Airport
When: 31/7-01/8
Status: Platinum
Rate: IHGR REWARD - 35 000 points for one night
Booked: King Bed Standard Jewel Wing
Received: King Bed Junior Suite "Lounge Access"

Nice surprise to finish a few days in Singapore, upgraded to a suite which I definitely didn't need, but was nice regardless. When checking in I did specifically ask about an upgrade as they didn't proactively give one. I was given an A4 sheet which said I now had complementary breakfast, 2 items of laundry, club access etc. Too bad I didn't see it till I woke up. When I went for the "complementary" breakfast I was told I didn't have access - too bad, I'm sure I didn't miss much, though let me know if I did.

1200 points amenity (600x2 for some reason, again, there must be a problem on CP Changi's end.)

Thanks - not sure the HI Mel has much of an airport view - location and terminal obstruct most views of any use. It;s primary selling point is proximity/convenience to airport (Ie. “On site”).

Keen to hear on both the Kimpton and HIE Barcelona please.

Hotel: Crowne Plaza, Hobart
When: 2-3 August
Status: Platinum ( by status match)
Booked: Regular on line Queen room
Received: same type of room but upgraded to club access ( incl b’fast). The club here is pretty good actually; very nice canapés in the evening and some fairly decent wines on offer.

Have attempted to purchase points @IHG during promo periods firstly about 3 weeks ago and again this week....get email 3 days later saying transaction cancelled...will phone after weekend to sort out.
Wondering if they is a qualifying time as member before you can purchase points with bonus offer...
I just matched status in July and wanted to do 5 required stays in UK over next 2 weeks...
Thanks in anticipation

Have you already exceeded you annual allocation (or does the transaction take you over it)?

If you are trying to use points for those stays, are you sure they will qualify for the fast track promo? Some of my reward nights seem to have but I'm not not sure if they are supposed to (there is a $30/night minimum, and I don't know how that works with points nights in the fine print)
