IHG Hotels that recognise status

The only time I can recall getting points in addition to another amenity benefit was when I stayed at IC Adelaide and chose breakfast. As the reception lady at IC Melbourne noted, it's only 600 points; the other options are better value.
Yes - definitely need to consider value. IHG Rewards points are valued roughly between US 0.65c and US 0.7c per point, so remember before accepting 600 points that it's only really worth US$4 / AU$6. Almost anything else will always be better value, given the choice. Of course, if you don't want/need a free drink or breakfast, then it's better than nothing.

Cheers,
Matt.

My most recent experience, at a HI ...
Leads me to believe, that there is some form of 'incentive' for the staff member who convinces a customer to accept a lousy 500 - 600 IHG Reward Points, in lieu of a $25. - $45. a head buffet breakfast.

I also think, there is now a 'water saving' conspiracy !!

They won't offer it, or leave in room ... until you ASK for it !!

I think you have the arithmetic a little off there ....
You meant to say, that points are worth some $0. 065 - $0.07 per point.

The bathroom tap is always there… though I obviously wouldn’t use it in countries with less than stellar water treatment.

And in those countries hopefully they have an electric jug so boil the water and refrigerate it is the way we go in hotels where bottled water isn't supplied.

If you're on business. and your company is picking up the tab, the points could be the best option.

Hotel: Crowne Plaza Christchurch
When: June 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: NZD $200/night (flexible rate which I had originally booked at NZD $300/night, but cancelled and re-booked.)
Booked: 1 King Standard
Received: 1 King Standard City View High Floor (a two-category upgrade, made even better by being allocated a room on the very top 17th floor and in just about the largest format that this particular room type comes in.)

A really good stay, which made up for my horrendous experience at another New Zealand IHG property, the Voco Auckland late last year. Had originally expected to arrive at around midnight however my flight from Sydney got diverted to Wellington due to the fog. I called the hotel at 2:45am local time and spoke with a cheerful receptionist who said they had suspected I might have been on that flight and didn't need to worry, as a valued Diamond member they were holding my room and would see me when they saw me.

Arrived just before 9am and check-in was good; my receptionist was a bit inexperienced but there was a more experienced guy also at the counter who was able to help him out. Welcome letter provided and took breakfast as the Diamond amenity. The junior receptionist thought my free brekkie would start the next day but since I had booked from the night before it was included for me on the morning I arrived too, as the more experienced receptionist pointed out.

Room was excellent, spacious and with excellent views being on the top floor. Air conditioning was great, there was a fully stocked minibar and the bedding was seriously, seriously good, like to the point where I have been googling it after to see if I can buy some for home! Only disappointment in the room was that the shower water pressure was mediocre.

Breakfast at the Market Place restaurant was of a high standard, staff had the Diamond amenity noted on their list. There was filter coffee at the buffet, there were barista machines as well however I didn't see anyone ordering barista coffees and I didn't enquire either. Lots of variety for the hot food, good range of bakery, cold cuts and fruits and a chef's station where you could get pancakes, porridge or eggs to order. Other hotel facilities including the gym and bar downstairs were good too.

Hotel is in an excellent location, just two minutes walk from New Regent Street and not more than five minutes from Cathedral Square. Christchurch is flat as a pancake so getting around is pretty easy and I did a lot of walking around town. Pretty chilly this time of year so pack a quality jacket! Thankfully not very windy though. This was the first time I've been back in the city post-earthquake so it was unrecognisable from what I remember. Would recommend Twenty Seven Steps on New Regent Street if you're looking for a highlight dinner.

Late check-out to 1pm was provided without any fuss. The receptionist re-programming my key for the late checkout was shocked to see they had given a Diamond member a Platinum key card, something I too had noticed but didn't think was a big deal! 😄

Excellent value for money and a close-to-flawless experience, reminiscent of the good old days before the pandemic made things more difficult. Loved the CP and will definitely return the next time I'm in Ōtautahi Christchurch!

Hotel: Holiday Inn Little India - Singapore
When: June 2023
Status: Diamond
Rate: SGD $213.84/night WSJ partner rate (3 day cancellation)
Booked: Standard Room
Received: 1 Queen Bed Std Loft (13th Floor)
Bathrobes: Yes
TP: 2-ply

I arrived at 1pm but no room was ready (I was offered a smoking room but chose to wait). WhatsApp message confirmed room ready by 2pm.

Hotel took a $300 SDG deposit (including the room).

I was glad to get the loft room and it was nice enough. At an angle there was a good view over the terracotta roofs of Little India. For some reason I thought the property was newish but it didn’t really look it - ancient and coughpy looking TVs, cough coffee machine, worn bathroom etc.

The loft is marketed as sleeping 4x but I cant imagine more than two adults being comfortable - the stairs up to the bed had hard metal railings which could really bang you up if you hit your head on them (maybe I’m just a klutz).

Breakfast was not great - I recall the HIX in Clarke Quay being better.

I probably wouldn’t stay again given there are other options like IC Robertson Quay which I quite liked last year - though the rates for both ICs in SG are at least 2x this one I believe. Maybe I’ll try the Voco or other HIs next time.

Hotel: Kimpton Hotel Shinjuku, Tokyo
When: June 2023
Status: Diamond Elite
Rate: YEN ¥54,000
Booked: Standard Room
Received: 1 King Bed Essential Separate Bath (11th Floor)
Bathrobes: Yes and Kimono's
TP: 2-ply, but with a lovely Bidet.

The staff to guest ratio was superb at this hotel, nothing was too much trouble. About a 10 minute walk to Shinjuku station, so it was a little further away than needed but I was happy with the location and it was right next to the Park Hyatt.

Room was very comfortable and all the ammenities you could ask for, internet was lightly quick. Breakfast was complimentary as a DE and it was quite over the top in a good way. Service was impeccable.

Nightly complimentary drinks were served on the 16th floor. The gym was well stocked with the latest and greatest and the late check out to 4PM was appreciated (apparently only 2PM at Kimpton's). Rooftop bar offered good views and a cool atmosphere.

All in all I will be staying here again in January.

Hotel: Kimpton Fitzroy, London
When: June
Status: Diamond + Ambassador
Rate: IHGR Advance
Booked: 1 Single City Single Bed
Received: 1 Queen Bed ($155 value in terms of booking cost difference)
Amenity Offered: Can't recall the choices, but I took breakfast option for both dates of my stay (2 x $55 value). Also received 600 free amenity points - every little helps. :)

Definitely very please with the value received from managing to snag this IHG Diamond membership last year during the promo code leak. This was my second occasion staying at Kimpton Fitzroy. I highly recommend it for a London stay: great location, stunning architecture, delicious breakfast and friendly (but not fawning) staff! Secret Password also got me 2 free coughtails! 🤩 That's a lot of extra value overall.

Intercontinental Tashkent

Brilliant hotel - only opened three months ago and I was apparently the first Australian to stay there. Great service, a lovely open-air rooftop bar and I was upgraded from a standard room to a premium corner room as a diamond member.

Holiday Inn Almaty

All diamond benefits honoured and I was upgraded at check-in to a junior suite. The hotel is a bit dated but perfectly serviceable.

One of my pet peeves with IHG is that they seem to have 25 different levels of standard room, especially at Intercontinentals, so they can always upgrade you as a Diamond, but only to a marginally better room. Never had a genuine upgrade to a suite. Get plenty with other hotel chains.

Fair. At the Intercontinental, the room I was upgraded into is also one that normally comes with Club Lounge access (it specifically said this on the room type on my invoice), but I wasn’t able to use the lounge. This is standard policy with IHG, is it the same with other chains?

(I’ll shortly be able to select a lounge subscription as a milestone reward anyway so not really an issue for me.)

At Hilton, if you are Gold and are upgraded to a Club room, you also get the associated club access

The trade-off with lounge access being relatively hard to acquire is that the lounges tend to be on the better end of the spectrum. You'll enjoy that milestone reward!

Well I have been lucky. I had 2 suite upgrades as a plat at IC Double Bay once with club access. I have had 3 stays at IC Sanctuary cove and suite every time with club access. This year now as diamond suite upgrade and club access at IC Porto. And high floor room and club access at IC Lisbon.
This year I will also qualify for the 12 month club access. Though my 40th night is 30/12 so just making it.
The clubs are definitely much better than other chains.
