IHG Hotels that recognise status

Hotel: Hotel Indigo Melbourne on Flinders
Room was nice, but very noisy due to city life,

Thank you for the review!

This is one of the downsides of taking old lower class hotels and tarting them up… I’ve found quite often the room insulation and coughpy old windows don’t get replaced and the sound pollution is still bad.

This caught me out at another Indigo conversion which was the same.

Hotel: InterContinental Adelaide
When: September 30-October 2
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: Ambassador Certificate Rate at $265/night. When I originally booked this room back in May, it was $360/night; yay for cancellable rooms! Sydney IC would never be this cheap ...
Booked: 1 King Classic River View
Received: 1 King Classic Club Lounge Access River View High Floor
Amenity Chosen: I picked breakfast, but like last time when I stayed here during the March long weekend, I also got 600 points. Still offering two extra bottles of IC-branded water with a welcome/thank you card, with daily bottled water replenishment.

They finished upgrading the lifts since I was last here; now working on the pool. Sadly, FruChocs weren't offered during turndown service this time round ... However if you had the Food and Beverage credit to burn, you could spend $18 on a 250g bag from the minibar!

I didn't realise the AMB upgrade applied when you've used a suite upgrade cert?

I didn't either but didn't turn down the denied upgrade compensation.

Now a negative experience. On 25/9 had a booking at CP Changi. As our BA flight was 5 hours late checked in online and was billed immediately. Payment shows up on my Amex account.
Arrived at hotel ~ 0230 and basically went through the check in again.
but when I checked my IHG account it shows up as a non qualifying stay with 0 points except for the 600 for a stay amenity which I selected as brekkie always in a lounge and bar not open during our stay.
So mentioned this to front desk when checking in on 2/10 and was told IT would look into it and email the next day. they didn't nor have I been emailed the copy of the bill for those 2 stays. Missing points form has been submitted online.

Now I have always had a survey request in the past. Not for the 25/10 stay and I am betting I won't get one for the 2/10 stay.

CP Surfers Paradise Sep 23.

Booked two rooms King and Double connecting via points.
Got an email a couple of days before to say the rooms had been upgraded, not sure what to perhaps a higher floor and there was a spa bath in the king so perhaps that.
Offered breakfast for all 5 guests (2 adults three children) as Diamond benefit.
Also given two drink vouchers without asking and late checkout until 1:00pm.when I asked for it.
Rooms have been refurbed, and as an older style CP they are larger than modern hotels. Double room had separate shower to bathtub.
Second time here and welcome back card in the room. After staying at the Voco many times I think it’s CP from now on.

CP Surfers Paradise Sep 23.

Quite a different experience to my stay on the 21st! It was booked a couple of days before the trip, 2 adults & 2 children in a standard room.

I'm Diamond Status.

Arrived at the hotel at about 1pm Thursday afternoon to check in. Without saying to me directly, the gentlemen at the desk could not find my booking at all. Asked for verification of the booking, so I showed him the book via the IHG app on my phone.

After 15 minutes, the gentlemen manually processed the booking and gave me the room key. I had to ask about breakfast, after heading to the back to check with the manager he said yes because of my status breakfast would be included and that he was advised to upgrade the room. Received upgrade to Premium Ocean View.

Went up to the room, opened door. 1 bed. The original booking was 2 adults & 2 children. Called the Duty Manager, who asked us to come back down to reception.

Spoke to the same gentlemen that checked us in at the desk (he was aware we were coming back down) and straight away changed our room. This time to a Premium King Ocean View Suite.

Because of the room configuration, we asked for the sofa bed to be made and a roll away bed to be setup. I had to then follow up later in the evening about the sofa bed as they set up the roll away bed but ignored the sofa bed request.

Friday was a much better experience. I asked at the front desk before breakfast about a late checkout, this was the manager who put us on a 3pm checkout and checked to confirm that all the issues from the previous day were resolved.

Overall, the worst experience we have had in our time staying at Crowne Surfers, at no time on the Thursday did the manager even attempt to pop out and apologise. We will be back, and I'm sure if the original booking showed on their system we wouldn't of had the issues we had to begin with.

Hotel: Voco Brisbane
When: 1 night in Oct 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: 24,000 points
Booked: Standard - 2 double beds
Received: 2 Double beds - River view
Amenity Offered: I asked & received breakfast

I only went up to Brisbane for the night before flying back to Sydney the next day.
The hotel was only 5-10min walk from 2 hotels mum would normally stay at.
Both not available and she doesn't like to pay much with about $150n being the limit.

The room had a nice view of the Brisbane River.
Mum liked the room and the fact she got a full unobstructed view of the river 😇
There was card thanking me for being a diamond member along with a plate with a few raspberries & strawberries, a macaron, small piece of cake along with some chocolate.

Breakfast was the usual buffet with 1 free "specialty coffee" each before a $5 coffee tax applied.
Only got the 2 free coffees because I was a diamond member.
The coffee was nice and went well with my made to order 2 fried eggs, bacon, snags tomato etc 😁

Mum still cant believe she got a room with a view of the Brisbane River and breakfast included & cost her nothing 🤗😎

Overall a nice stay and would happily stay again. Although I will miss the free breakfast as a diamond member 😔

Hotel: Holiday Inn Harbourside, Cairns
When: 2 nights in Oct 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: Rewards Nights
Booked: 1 King Bed Premium Seafront
Received: 1King Suite Seafront
Amenity Offered: Offers all options, chose Breakfast for 2

I had noted this was an anniversary trip in the booking. This fact also came out during check-in and the manager (who was doing the check-in) asked if we would like a bottle wine to celebrate and would we like white, red or bubbles - thanked him and suggested bubbles would be nice. He said he would arrange it to be delivered to us. Also given two drinks vouchers to help celebrate.

When we arrived at the room, there was a bottle of bubbles already there (in an ice bucket with 2 glasses). Then a few minutes later there was a knock on the door and the manager's delivery arrived. So ended up with two bottles of bubbles - one for each night :).

Room was large but basic and showing its age. Shower over bath. Small TV that did not face the bed. No power points near the bed. But generally clean and had a nice balcony with a great view from the 7th (top) floor.

All staff we encountered were very pleasant, courteous and helpful.

Breakfast was basic buffet with the usual hot and cold items. Not an extensive range but certainly sufficient and met the purpose nicely. Coffee "machine" was out of order and large "flask" of "freshly brewed coffee" available. Tried it and decided we would find coffee elsewhere.

Location is ok if you don't mind a good walk to the cafes, restaurants, lagoon, marina etc. Thankfully weather was not too hot/muggy and we like to walk. But if you want to be in the marina area and in peak of summer, choose something closer to that area (Shangri-La, Hilton, Doubletree etc.).

Hotel: InterContinental Toronto Centre
When: September 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: 1 reward night for 90,000pts, 1 free night with Ambassador Certificate and the remaining two nights averaged out at CAD $640/night
Booked: 2 Double Classic
Received: 2 Queen Premium High Floor (a two-category upgrade)

Hotel prices are obscene in Toronto (well, Canada as a whole!) at the moment so I was pretty happy to get four nights here for a cash outlay of just over CAD $1,200. For reference had I booked on cash alone it was going to cost CAD $3,000 for the four nights.

Arrived in the afternoon and was warmly welcomed by the same receptionist I had been emailing back and forth with a few days earlier to make sure the bookings were linked, he remembered me from the emails. 4pm check-out was proactively offered however we turned it down due to an early departure. Chose breakfast as our amenity and were provided with breakfast vouchers for each day of the stay.

The room we were upgraded to had been recently renovated, you could tell from the delightful new carpet smell! No lake or CN Tower views but our view overlooking Union Station was equally beautiful in its own right. Room had all the IC brand-standard amenities and was very comfortable. The Ambassador complimentary bottled water was provided, however on one day of the stay it wasn't replenished by housekeeping. When I called to request it I was advised they only provide it on request which I thought was interesting.

Breakfast was alright, but certainly on the mediocre side for an InterContinental. Standard mix of hot food, bakery, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc as well as omelettes made to order. Worst part of the breakfast would have to be the bright orange cheese they use in the omelettes! 😄 Also takes some getting used to as an Australian (and many other parts of the world for that matter) but juices weren't available at the buffet to self-serve, you had to ask your server and they would bring out a jug and top up your glass. One other disappointment was they only started serving breakfast at 7am, which in my view is an hour too late for a big city hotel and meant we had to skip it on our last morning. Given it was included as a Diamond amenity I won't complain too much, but I would probably just get some Tim Hortons instead if I was paying. For those wondering, the vouchers specifically note that taxes and gratuity are covered and you have to hand it over at the start of the meal.

We put our CAD $25 F&B credit towards dinner one night. Ordered a burger and a rack of ribs, both came with fries but the ribs came "smoked fries". Sounded good in theory but they were weirdly almost a cigarette/tobacco smoke which I didn't like at all. Everything else was really good though, including the normal fries.

As for other facilities the hotel has a gym, pool and spa, unfortunately didn't get to make use of them but got some pictures.

Service at the hotel was good, certainly no complaints. Needed to get a suit pressed and although express service typically costs an extra 50%, they offered to do it at no additional charge which was very nice of them.

Location is excellent, right in the downtown core and close to lots of attractions like the lakefront, the CN Tower, St Lawrence Market, Union Station and more. Very easy to get around.

Overall it was a pleasant, comfortable and enjoyable stay. I think having the recently renovated room made it a lot nicer so would recommend booking accordingly. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Toronto!

Hotel: InterContinental Montreal
When: September 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: CAD $487.90/night (Club IC Rate)
Booked: 1 King Premium Montreal View Corner
Received: 1 Bedroom Suite Montreal View (room types are a bit confusing but I believe it's a one-category upgrade)

Nothing particularly special, and desperately in need of a refurbishment. Booked for a Friday night primarily to make use of the 4pm late check-out as I had a late flight the next day.

Arrived at midday and was advised the room wasn't ready. Fair enough, stated check-in time was 3pm and everyone was being sent away but the receptionist was so confused at my simple request of storing my bags, first she suggested I take them back downstairs to the bell desk then she ended up taking them herself. Went to lunch and returned at 3:10pm, spoke to a new receptionist who searched the system for a good 5 minutes but still couldn't find a room. To her credit she was extremely professional and trying her very best at service recovery, she was just hamstrung by the situation management had created for all the frontline staff to manage. She said they would prioritise cleaning the room whilst trying to spin the fact I had been upgraded, which was not particularly impressive since a one-category upgrade is guaranteed, and then offered in a way which indicated it was a courtesy that she would let me sit in the Club InterContinental while I waited. I pointed out I had booked a Club IC rate so I was only being offered something I had paid for anyway, it took her a minute to review the reservation and see I was correct. I was then walked to the lounge and advised she would come to get me, in the meantime I enjoyed the peace and quiet and grabbed a club soda from the fridge. Eventually at about 3:40pm she arrived with my room keys and profuse apologies. Chose the drinks as my welcome amenity and was provided with two vouchers even though I was staying alone.

My suite was on the 20th floor and was the "Suite Tourelle Iconic" - it had fantastic panoramic views of the city and was very spacious, but wow it was dated! The only remotely new thing in the room were the TVs. It was however very clean, comfortable and in good condition. One thing I found very strange were the toiletries provided in the shower; there was a brand standard Byredo soap but all the other items were a variety of completely random brands.

If I had to describe the shower, I would say it woke up and chose violence. There was one water pressure level and it was insanely strong, to the point where it took a while to adjust the showerhead to a level where it didn't hurt to stand under it and I had to turn it off reasonably regularly to let the shower drain (I don't even think it was a blocked drain, it was just that strong!). I considered saying something but given it was a one-night stay, couldn't be bothered. A+ for the towels though, they were massive and very good quality.

Bags were brought up promptly and an Ambassador welcome plate of cheese, charcuterie and a bottle of San Pellegrino arrived soon after. The receptionist had offered a choice of fruit, cheese, charcuterie or mixed along with still or sparkling water and I had chosen the mixed.

Doesn't look like the Club serves afternoon tea and I received no welcome letter advising me of the benefits, however after texting the staff (handy way to get service) I was advised evening drinks and canapés are served from 5.30-7.30pm. Everything was self-serve and they had a respectable array of food including hot pasta and chicken then a variety of cold items. For drinks they had a range of beers, wines and spirits including a French sparkling wine (not champagne though). Staff came through the lounge regularly to tidy up and kept everything clean and well stocked. Seemed to be very popular, there was a large group staying at the hotel either pre-cruise or for some nautical themed conference and clearly going for a fancy dinner later, so everyone was very elegantly dressed in the lounge.

Dining options at the hotel include Osco! Restaurant and the Sarah B Absinthe Bar. The bar looked great with live jazz on Friday nights. I had planned to visit after dinner to use my vouchers since it was supposed to be open until 11:30pm but when I arrived just after 11pm they had already closed.

For breakfast it wasn't super clear whether you could have the club breakfast in the restaurant or the lounge so I just went with the lounge, which was a good option. A variety of hot and cold items were available as well as sparkling wine to make your own mimosa. I was eating far too much good food in Montréal so was quite happy to have a lighter breakfast in the lounge!

Unfortunately didn't get to use the $25 food credit during the short stay. I checked out at 4pm, which took forever as I had to wait in a queue.

Overall the hotel served my needs for the one night but I probably wouldn't pick it for an extended stay. Too many small issues which on their own might be ok but added up to be very disappointing. On the whole I would say the staff were good, just let down by a management team who have not invested in their property. Hopefully a total refurbishment is not far away as the hotel has a fantastic location and could be amazing with a better product. Would be nice as well if they move the Club during the renovations, its current location in the lobby with random passers-by peeking through the glass to look inside isn't great. For the prior three nights I had stayed at Le Square Phillips just up the road, much cheaper but to be honest a better experience overall.

Would only return if the hotel is comprehensively refurbished or I need to make use of the 4pm check-out again.

Hotel: voco Kirkton Park Hunter Valley
When: October 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: CAD $308.40/night (Visa partner rate)
Booked: 1 King Standard
Received: 1 King Grand with Valley View (two-category update, highest non-suite category available)

Back in Australia and a quick two-night trip to the Hunter Valley for a wedding. Believe this voco property was formerly a Sebel, I had a pleasant stay overall.

Arrived around 12:45pm and room wasn't initially ready, but was available around 2pm. Receptionist had a trainee badge but was very professional and provided one of the most warm and memorable welcomes I've received at an IHG property anywhere. I don't think she had seen too many Diamond members come through and while making small talk during check-in she asked "So... do you travel a lot?" which I found hilarious 😄

Chose breakfast as my Diamond amenity and was provided with vouchers. All guests received a jar of home-made salt as a welcome gift and as an additional status amenity a bottle of wine and a jar of home-made honey were delivered to my room.

Rooms are spread across multiple buildings within the complex and I was in the Max Drayton Wing, which was close to the main building. The upgraded room was large, modern and spotlessly clean, with all the comforts needed for the stay. The balcony overlooking the valley was beautiful and made for some great morning/evening views. The bathroom was older in style but still functional. Strangely they didn't have the usual wall mount for the shower amenities installed and the shampoo / shower gel etc were left alongside the sink. There wasn't really anywhere to store them within the shower either so you had to open the door, grab them when you needed and then put them back, which made it difficult to keep the bathroom floor dry. Not sure why they won't just install a wall mount as i would say there was enough room for one. Housekeeping was good during the stay and very efficient, they made up my room in the short period while I was out at breakfast. Interestingly I came back on the second night to find they had turned down the bed and left chocolates, which hadn't happened on the first night.

F&B experience at the hotel was mixed. Had a light lunch on arrival at The Conservatory / Epoch Bar which is their all-day option. There is a variety of seating both inside and outside, I had the voco Beef Burger ($29) which was fine but certainly nothing special. They promote their fine dining restaurant Locavore as being open on Friday and Saturday nights only but I was surprised to find it open on a Thursday night and gave it a go. It was the sort of restaurant which I would say is nice, but not nice enough to last long if it was in a big city and facing genuine competition. At $90 for two courses and $105 for three courses it was also on the pricier side but I suppose could be worse. What made up for it was the "RSL-sized" wine pours and lovely service from the staff, which I find is almost always the case at nice hotels in regional Australia.

The breakfast buffet was extensive but my overall feelings on it are mixed. There was a sign saying you could order eggs / omelettes but no-one seemed to be ordering and it was hard to track anyone down. Likewise they said barista coffees were included but there was no-one around to take the order so everyone was just using the coffee machine instead. Obviously with no-one around plates tended to stack up too. I got the feeling they were deliberately trying to minimise these orders, ideally they should take guests to a table and take an order for coffees/eggs at that point but the way they were operating it was basically check-in at the front of the restaurant and then you were on your own.

In terms of hotel facilities there is a gym, indoor pool, tennis courts, basketball court, a farm with pigs and chickens and of course, plenty of wide open space to walk around. Plenty of car parking for those driving in and it's not far from Cessnock.

Check-out time is 11am which is on the earlier side but understandable given the smaller property. I requested a late check-out and they seemed pretty hesitant presuming I would request 2pm or something, but I only needed until 12pm and they were happy to accommodate it without any fuss. Overall I was happy with the service, as is often the case with smaller hotels it is a small team who seem to pop up everywhere so the staff will get to know you even during a short stay.

Overall a pretty good stay and nothing that would stop me from returning, although certainly a few little areas for improvement. Would recommend for those looking for something of an international standard in the region.

Hotel: Holiday Inn Express Queenstown NZ
When: October 15 - October 20 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: Stay Longer Pay Less. NZD$1,780 for the stay.
Booked: 1 Queen Bed Standard Panoramic Window
Received: 1 Queen Bed Standard Panoramic Window (no room upgrade)
Amenity Chosen: I picked the drink vouchers. Breakfast is free and included in all rates at this property.

The is a recently opened hotel (2020 if I recall) in close proximity to the heart of the tourist centre of Queenstown. there is a bit of a hill to walk up/down between the hotel and the downtown are but the hill gives great views of the surrounding mountains and the lake. I think it's a great spot.

The hotel itself is fantastic in my view. The huge open reception/restaurant/lobby/lounge area on the ground floor is excellent. The breakfast service is very good (the usual suspects - bacon, eggs, sausages, grill tomatoes, cereals, mueslis, yoghurt, fresh fruit, pasties, tea and coffee) considering that it is included in all rates.

I wasn't all that disappointed that I wasn't provided with a room upgrade as the room that I booked had spectacular views day and night and was perfect for my stay. A pic of the view from the room windows is attached.

Very happy with this property. I'd definitely stay here again. Although it is worth pointing out that at the time of booking I actually wanted to stay at the Crown Plaza (it is right on the water in the heart of downtown - but they had no availability for some odd reason, so I chose the HIX instead). I'm not happy with my choice.

Hotel: Holiday Inn Express Newcastle (Australia)
When: October 2023
Status: Diamond Ambassador
Rate: $162/night (Visa partner rate)
Booked: 1 Queen Bed Standard
Received: 1 Queen Bed Standard

Returning to this hotel after a previous stay last November. Some things have stayed the same, others were not as good as my last stay.

This was the first hotel to take a full deposit at time of booking when using the Visa offer, I have used it plenty of times before and most of the time payment is made at check-out or just before check-in. I didn't bother querying it as it wasn't a huge amount of money.

Check-in was efficient. No room upgrade was provided despite the hotel not being full and more expensive categories being available, interestingly the same happened during my last stay. Maybe they just don't like upgrading people at this particular HIX? I'm also not sure what the situation is with welcome amenities at HIXs, nothing was offered and 500pts was posted to my account, despite a bar being available downstairs for a potential welcome drink voucher.

Rooms are on the smaller side but clean and fitted out with everything you would need for a short stay. Not sure if it is just my luck or what but this was the third hotel I have stayed at in 2023 (and second IHG property) where despite being full, the pump on one of the shower toiletry bottles didn't work. This one was particularly annoying because they are pretty firmly locked in the holder so it took a bit of twisting and turning to pull it out of the holder and pour it out. Starting to think I need to test the refillable bottles at the start of each stay and hotels should make this part of their housekeeping procedure prior to the commencement of a new stay!

Breakfast whilst fine was not as good as it was last year. Quality and variety of the food on offer had markedly declined. Breakfast room staff were also not as friendly as they were on the last trip.

Location is definitely a plus here with easy access to Newcastle Interchange for trains, buses and light rail. If you're looking for a nice dinner I would highly recommend Humbug, it was excellent!

Overall for the price paid it was a decent stay but I wish they could get the brekkie back to where it used to be and work on the couple of small issues I encountered. I did raise all the items in the post-stay survey and received a very prompt response from the duty manager, acknowledging the concerns and crediting some additional points to my account, which I thought was nice and not something I had been expecting.

Advice plse, lowly IHG plat expiring December 31. Looking to book either paid or reward at SYD IC around 27 Dec. Does the IC have a members lounge (and would let in a plat?) Thanks

Great info thanks. I'll look at a room w' club access.

Yes they have a club lounge. No they won't let you in unless you book a paid room with club access.

Is the club lounge worth paying extra for or pretty ordinary?
