I have a trip booked PER-MEL-SYD and back in January.

This morning I was notified that two of the flights have changed, and I could accept these changes or view alternate offerings.

The flights were the MEL-SYD and MEL-PER legs, and only shifted by 20 mins, so it was no big deal, but I did think about getting up to SYD a touch earlier, so pressed the hyperlink to see what options I would be offered...

25hrs in economy via Dubai didn't really float my boat. I will phone the call centre and sort that one out a bit closer to the date.

But on the way back:

That would be interesting! Curiously I wasn't even offered ANY viable QF Domestic flight pair.

I wonder how on the hook Qantas would be for honouring these offerings if I selected them?

Strange days.

If I had the time, I’d click the SYD-KUL-PER option in Business just for fun. 🤣

Until you realise the SCs are a fraction of what you expected!

Edit: although academic generally on CR booking (apart from PC/PC+ members).

I wonder if there are any cabotage issues with those offerings?

I do like QF's new rebooking system, but someone seems to have forgotten to exclude options via other countries on purely domestic itineraries.
Does cabotage apply to award bookings? The OP’s original booking appears to be a classic reward.

MH122 on 7/1/24 doesn’t seem to be available as a classic award. I wonder if the system would make it available and issue ticket.

Cabotage is a fairy tale governments tell their citizens. It simply doesn't exist. How can you say for certain that a given routing operating from an origin in a given country to another destination in the same country (via a third country) is cabotage? In the case of the EK option, one could certainly argue that it is a legitimate routing. For instance, if you had to meet a colleague in DXB before heading back to SYD then is that really cabotage? Where do we draw the line here (if one can even be drawn)?

Is it though, if offered as a replacement for a PER to SYD itinerary? The passenger may not even own a passport.
Presumably they'll just get a domestic sticker stamped on their boarding pass. No doubt DXB doesn't care if you have a passport or not for transit! 🤣

I can't tell if you're being serious, but this is very poor advice if so.

As @AIRwin says, Australia will require a passport to leave and re-enter the country. There are no D stickers provided unless you're on the domestic leg of an international flight, which PER-DXB is not.

The OP would also need to show their passport to Emirates gate staff in DXB when boarding the DXB-SYD flight. If they can't do this, they'd be denied boarding (and would then possibly need to enter the UAE to go to the Australian embassy and get an emergency passport - which they couldn't do since they have no passport).

There's also a chance the OP may be asked for their passport and boarding pass to clear transit security in Dubai. And even if this doesn't happen, what if the DXB-SYD flight gets cancelled and the OP needs to leave the airport and go to a hotel while waiting for the next available flight? etc. etc.

Whether it makes sense to accept the EK flight, I'm not so sure, especially in Y. The benefits I see would be the access to the various lounges along the way (namely the QF International lounge at PER and EK lounge at DXB). On the other hand you'll be sitting in Y for some time. What would be interesting is to see if there is anyway you can break up those two sectors. Like PER to DXB with a 2 week layover, then catch an onward flight to Europe (which should be cheap ex-DXB). Technically that shouldn't be allowed since it's no longer a connecting flight, but one could also say the same thing about QF offering EK flights for domestic travel too!

I thought the laughing emoji made it apparent that I was being facetious here.

Probably because any classic reward seats are being "held" for re-routed passengers and hence not available for others to book.

There isn’t a QF lounge at PER T1 anymore but the EK lounge is supposed to be solid.
