"please confirm your account number"
"please tell me your date of birth?"
"and you postal address?"
"and mother's maiden name?"

and we have another candidate for identity theft

Too easy if you're not paying attention or aware of the methods these scammers use.

Which is why I get so annoyed when Citi etc actually call for real and ask those questions

How would this have played out, had you said yes to the $500 transaction from NAB or any other of the banks mentioned? How do they use this to their "advantage"?

The westpac version starts by asking for the customer reference number.

Just had a call from a (surprisingly!!) Indian sounding voice:

"As a Virgin customer with recent flight history you have been randomly selected for a $999 credit to your account" Oh goody!! "Are you over 30?" Yes "Do you have a credit card?" Yes "We will credit your $999 to your card - can I have the number please" Not today Noddy !!!! Then I hung up.

Now how did he know that I had a recent flight on Virgin?

You should have asked what was wrong with TravelBank. Then given him your VFF number of 1234567890

I had a variation on this last week where someone rang and claimed that there had been a "mix up" with my VFF points and SCs not posting correctly on a recent flight, they already knew that I had flown a BNE-SYD leg on the 10th May and wanted the flight confirmation number and wanted my VFF number, I said no thanks and hung up on them, and immediately called VA. I asked if VA had tried to call me and they confirmed that they had not tried to contact me. Reported it to the VFF customer service rep but they never got back to me.

I suspect but can't prove a possible breach either in VFF database or in the VA booking engine, I changed my VFF password. I always keep all my BPs with me and never leave them on the plane.

Reads AFF of-course.;)

Mum told me she received a strange call today. The number originated in Nauru.

Received another call today about the Victoria Government LED program on some dodgy line from an Indian guy. This time the number from Egypt!
The number: 2013517760

On my phone bill I pay a small fee for caller ID on the home phone, and if the number is from overseas I just don't answer it.

Also handy when someone you know is calling you but you would rather not talk to them now or in the future.

A suggestion from a another AFFer add yourself to the do not call register, that works pretty well as well.

The Indians don't recognise the DoNotCall register and call regardless.

I haven't had a call in months and then 3 weeks ago a call. Told them the call was being recorded and strung them along for a while. They kept telling me my internet would be cut off soon. Yeah, right. They ended up swearing at me. lol I haven't heard a peep since.

I string them along for a while until they work out I am using a Mac. They then put me through to the mac support people who start waffling on about all sorts of rubbish. About that time I put the phone on the table and let them continue to waffle until they eventually hang up.

Do not call register only applies to calls emanating from an Australian source.

I never receive any of these calls. Not as far as I know, anyway. Although I only answer calls from a number that I recognise/expect and let the others go to voicemail. It's amazing how few callers will leave a message. Just goes to show how important the call was. ;)

I don't understand why so many people feel an obligation to answer every phone call.

Last week had the call again;
"Inspector prozac here."
After some banter.
Mumbai."You listen to me, your internet will stop working."
prozac. "No you listen to me, this is a police station and you will need to talk to our IT man. He is not here now but if you call back in an hour you can talk to him then."
Click, phone goes dead ...gone. Still waiting for the call-back.

I stopped these calls. I pulled the phone out of my landline and only call on mobiles. I lost my mobile once so plugged the phone back in to ring it. I swear within 10 minutes I got an Indian call centre ringing.
