Indian WINDOWS call centre ... Be careful

Maybe it's urban myth but I read of someone who responded to the call by saying they were Detective ABC at the house investigating a murder scene and they were recording the details of every call for further investigation as potential suspects. That created a hang up.

Oh that is hilarious, they would have been sh****ng themselves. If I've got time I might try that on the next one of these

Someone at an overseas call centre who can absolutely prove they weren't in Australia would have been pooing themself? I think not.

Getting them to hang up is not much of a challenge. If you want to end the phone call as quick as possible just hang up yourself.

Essentially that is what I posted sans the murder when I started this thread. Told them the call was being traced and got a very concerned response "Oh, please don't do that." Contrary to what has been suggested that these people are innocent participants and just be being paid, they do know what is going on from their reactions when challenged.

It's sad that we need to have such a guard up for scams like these

The reason I started this thread was to alert those less computer savvy.

Sure. But I heard of the murder call a few years ago, when these windows calls first started. We've been without our landline for a couple of years now so well before then.

Well it works.;)

Tend also to string them along for a bit.
Then tell them I'm running Ubuntu.

I am getting a few of them at the moment. Noticed two things recently they are 'routing' the calls through the US as they use to show as blocked caller ID, by displaying a US telephone number it looks like it might be coming from Microsoft.

Also saw on the VA website last night a scam calling saying need to confirm flight details and requesting credit card numbers. Please be aware.

Had one of these on a quiet Satrurday arvo ... strung them along from memory right to where they instructed on how to download when I said "AVG Security Alert has appeared" ... they tried another way and I said the same thing about AVG ... they hung up ... took around 35 minutes.

I had plenty of these as well, but the latest one is the Indian call centre rep asking if I have been involved in a car accident in the past year (or past three years). They must be bad drivers in India because they find it hard to believe when I say "NO".

Of course, I string them along too when I have time; but never thought of getting a recipe for a curry. LOVE IT!

We might be able to start a new thread on Indian call centre curry recipes.

A sister's friend did the same thing (similar buggery - something about cleaning a virus or some other BS) whilst she was up in Rockhampton. Sister called me soon after and described the situation; had to diagnose the thing over the phone, which was a bit painful. I think they eventually found another computer guru in the local area to clean things up after I flagged that it was a hoax.

I guess you have people who fall for Nigeria 419. This is more dangerous in a way, because less people actually understand computers and what the hell is going on (also discretion ends up being the better part of valour, as it were), even though for most of us in the computer headspace, this is a rather rudimentary "attack" in the grand scheme of things.

Interesting... Also occurred in rocky for me. Not doing the towns rep any favours!

There's a time share scam in Bali where the prize is attendance at a sell promo at a resort. MrP was having a discussion with one of the sellers while I was in a 7/11. The seller could not understand why he received so much grief from tourists because they are told in their training they are giving away a prize. They genuinely thought they were doing a great thing.
Same in Thailand. They would get ~20 baht for each completed survey.

I usually let them talk for a while then put the phone down. I pick it up about a minute later and if they were on the other side, I would just hello... hello. Generally they catch on that I am playing them and disconnect. Using this method I think it deters the same companies from repeatedly ringing.

A mate of mine plays a game with blocked numbers. He answers, and before they can commence their spiel
quickly says " Its done - but there's blood everywhere" then hangs up.:D

Latest one this afternoon:

Hello I am from NAB, did you authorize a $500 transaction in New Zealand?

I don't have an account with NAB.

Sorry, I meant Westpac.

I don't have an account with them either.

ANZ?..............................

They hung up when they heard laughing.

How would this have played out, had you said yes to the $500 transaction from NAB or any other of the banks mentioned? How do they use this to their "advantage"?

They'd probably then start trying to sucker in someone by saying that there's been some sort of compromise, then you would give personal particulars or some other BS.

"please confirm your account number"
"please tell me your date of birth?"
"and you postal address?"
"and mother's maiden name?"

and we have another candidate for identity theft
