I have always assumed that a domestic economy to business upgrade request would be granted if requested correctly and in plenty of time ( months) and if "u" seats were available .
I applied to upgrade a family member MEL-BNE in april . There were 'U" class seats on EF and checking on the QFF award booking engine , there were classic business reward seats for the relevant flight - I assume this means that there were upgrades available.
The upgrade has not come thru despite the above.
I rang QFF and the agent agreed that there were seats available but my family member was in a queue!!
I know the upgrade for international flights are different but i assume that domestic went thru if seats were availabe.
Have i got it wrong - maybe some recent "enhancement" has changed things ?

It's an ongoing QF system issue. You're absolutely correct that if there is U class inventory available on a domestic sector then an upgrade request should confirm instantly. If it doesn't you do have to call to get it fixed. In this case, I would HUACA until you can reach an agent that knows what they're doing.

Was the booking ticketed at the time of the original request? If it had only been booked/confirmed, but not actually ticketed, then this doesn't work, and the upgrade request will waitlist until closer to the flight date. If you still see 'U' fares available today, I would be inclined to cancel the upgrade request and put it back in for an immediate upgrade confirmation.

Cheers,
Matt.

QF7 1/2 Y Saver to J, rejection text but successful at the gate
QF22 6/2 Y Flex to J, confirmed at T-60 (went out with three empty seats)

As always thank you.
I have made the error .
I am Plat and the U class availability on EF and QFF reflected this .
My son is Bronze so he cannot access the upgrades.
My bad !
