Instant IHG Diamond Status by Registration

The free night weekend certificate at a nice IC pretty much covers the points or $200 USD.
Agree. With the diamond renewal over, I plan to wait until I next need to stay at an IC and buy ambassador then, for this reason. That way the amb benefits will apply for longer into the future.

Whoever manages the ambassador program should prepare for a massive drop in yoy revenue vs last December.

I think they'd be aware of that, they've just opted to monetise Diamond extensions in other ways (buy the points, double night credits, and so on)

But they’d be different revenue streams. AMB and the broader One Rewards. Someone might get a bigger bonus than another.

Also unlikely to be equivalent.

The cost of buying Ambassador to extend diamond was about 1/4 of the cost that they are now selling 100k points for to extend diamond.

The Ambassador cost could pay for itself in free breakfasts, even if you didnt use the free night at a IC. But the number of free nights you can get with the points purchased may not give the same return.

Especially when you can purchase cheap reward points pretty much anytime using the “alternate” method.

BTW, what was the lowest offer anyone received the “buy” Diamond retention? Sounds like those who weren’t even close? Did anyone already over Gold or Platinum retention level but still short of Diamond get the offer?

Im 95k EQPs short but you can only buy 90k ($1150) or 100k ($1250) - weirdly the link not does say if this is AU or USD, whereas if you buy points via the normal purchase page it is USD.

Last year 4 nights at Crown Plaza Hobart cost me ~90k points , but cash price for same room was ~$950 (i booked 2 identical rooms for same stay, once cash and one points); so Im doubtful I would get AU $1250 let alone USD$1250 of value from the 100k points purchase given limited travel in next 6 montsh (none at IHG) and uncertainty of travel Jul-Dec 24.

If like in past years I had a good 20ish nights booked at IHG it may be a different story.

I am currently one night short of gold with 19 nights, but because a few of those are redemptions, only have earned about 25k points this year. So I would need to buy 100k.

I am also in the middle of a double status nights promo through end of year but that's capped at 15 nights and in any case was not going to get close to 70.

Strange, I can buy up to 120k.

They‘re USD. Click through and it shows the total after your name, address etc.

If the AUD was a tad stronger, the Diamond purchase would be slightly more compelling.

Who reckons the Diamond extension with AMB renewal will restart next year? 😉

Oh I can buy up to 120k too, but I'm only 95k short so wouldn't want to buy more than I need

I asked up thread (with no response) that I presumed that the “offer” amount at the time was what one needed to get to 120k status points. Since I was under 10k at the time it offered me the full 120k. My tally is now higher and I’m assuming I only need to buy sufficient to get to a total of 120k status points.

In your case, that’ll still be a min 100k purchase - unless you can squeeze in 5k stay before 31 Dec and then a 90k purchase.

I don't think it will restart, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some status challenges enter the arena - probably targeted at people using corporate rate codes, and with slightly stricter criteria than last time around.

Agree that a stronger Aussie would change the equation on this for me. It's about 30-40% too expensive to be compelling for me. Or, as you posted earlier, if it was combined with a bonus points on purchase offer, it would make it compelling too.

I already registered and now a Diamond. Worked with my friends too.
Nothing in 2023?

I guess we'll see next year, but we've already started seeing offers that don't seem to have been around before. Ambassador was a good trick while it existed (2016 for me) but thats over now.(although we shall see what happens when the reviews actually happen)

This. In early 2020 (pre-covid), they renewed my status despite not meeting the requirements. Wondering if they intend to do something similar this year.

It seems most people who earned enough to get Plat or close to Plat have been ineligible for the recent point purchase offer so it may be a possibility?

I’m still showing up as a diamond elite despite not meeting requirements to maintain status. Room upgrade and free breakfast this week in Canberra.

Nice. I'm still Diamond too but borrowed time it seems. In my IHG account overview:

"Our annual review of your 2023 qualifying activity is in progress. Your 2024 status will be updated in your account soon."

Here's to being overlooked! 🤣

I got an email from IHG congratulating me for requalifying diamond but still have that same message on the app.
However it goes on to say you must reach the qualifying number of eligible nights or points.

My current Ambassador membership ends 29 Mar 2024. But my status says “Diamond Elite until 31/12/2024”. (love the non-American formatting)

Just renewed my Ambassador membership and no change to the expiry date. I needed to do this to finalise a free night redemption for June that I wanted to be done ASAP.

It still says "Our annual review of your 2023 qualifying activity is in progress. Your 2024 status will be updated in your account soon."
