I can now advise the outcome from a joyous weekend of QF site crawling in support of this thread. Yes, there's no sport as satisfying as actually testing a theory.
I called QF, and the agent told me that "yes, it sometimes does that as a hangover from the un-completed segment". My heart-rate settled a bit. She dismissed the rogue PNR, and told me all would be good with the world.
Outcome: all good with the world.
So now the money shot. What happened? Answer: not even a hint of an offer. I wasn't even sent a "would you like a hotel with that?" email. Certainly no SC.
Giving up until after my anniversary passes on 29 Feb. Are you listening, Mr AI Reservations System?
- Friday: I took a revenue domestic booking all the way to payment, and then didn't pay.
- Saturday morning: a friendly email arrived, identifying that my incomplete reservation had been politely held over for me (with a locator) until 2359 Saturday. Sure enough, there was the segment and locator in my reservations list. When I went into the record, it offered me a big red "click here to pay" box for the correct amount. Very effective. So... I did nothing. I figured I'd like to see what would happen, and very low likelihood of the fare vanishing. I was right.
- Sunday morning: I went into my reservations list and the segment and its locator had vanished. I checked the locator, and there was no such trip found. Good stuff.
- Sunday afternoon: I made the same revenue reservation, starting from scratch (there's a sale on, folks!). I took that to completion, so now I have a PNR. I went back into the reservations list to discover TWO trips on the same plane: one with the locator from the transaction I'd just done, and another that I couldn't identify (and not the same as the self-cancelled segment).
