Hi,
Didn't want to necro a dead thread.

Just wondering if anyone has had recent success with interlining luggage on separate bookings.

I'm flying QF1 to LHR (paid booking), then catching an Iberia flight to MAD (reward booking) with 5 hours transit time.

On the way back, i'll be on QF2 but am looking into flights to LHR from LIS. There are options with BA but they're a bit dearer however if they're likely to put my luggage onto QF2 for me then i'd be swayed towards going with them.

Anyone had success getting BA, on a separate booking, to check your luggage onto QF2 (or similar) back home?

Thanks

I don't think anything has changed in the last few months. You should be good to through-check to MAD per QF policy, but you should assume that BA won't do it for your return.

How did you book your return flight? If through a travel agent, maybe you can get them to add a leg that you want to your booking?

They have never done that for me..
For example SYD-MEL-LAX (domestic $$, international J award) - twice its happened.
There's been reports that they are meant to. It was heavily reported they would after oneworld changed their rule requiring that members transfer across tickets. Though it no longer appears to be listed on their Through Checked Baggage help page.

Didn't for me as previously upthread QF to QF 2 PNR.
And yes I printed this section out to show them but no was the answer
QF to QF is through checked regardless of same booking or mix of booking types!
I'd have been calling for the supervisor on that one. Someone was having a bad day.

Ok, seems like on the way over to MAD it *might* be possible, depending on the check-in agent. Regardless, with 5 hours connection time I should be ok should they not.

And definitely a no with BA, so I'll save some coins and book with a cheaper option.

Booked it myself :( I don't think it'll be worth the change fee etc. It's ok though, I have options that get me to LHR with lots of time to spare.

Will report back on my experience when I do go.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the quick responses - ya'll are great!

I've never had a problem with QF to QF separate ticket and through checking baggage.
Last did it successfully in 2021. At Sunshine Coast too, where you might expect the agents to be less knowledgeable.

Have not tried QF to OW since the rule changes.

They do that all the time for me in the last couple of years as i regular book 2 PNRs as my partner often just initiates flights from MEL.

It is always possible even when against policy, so it never hurts to ask. Just don’t rely on it.

I was through checked by AA on AUS-DFW-SYD on two separate tickets (AA rev to QF CR) and I didn’t even ask. The guy was the supervisor and figured I probably wouldn’t be ending my journey in DFW so proactively offered.

But QF to QF always, and QF to OW if mixture of revenue and award is policy. However I think OW award & QF revenue is easier as both are 081 QF tickets. I think it’s slightly more complex for OW revenue as it’s not already in their system. But the policy doesn’t say which combination so either way should work. It also doesn’t specify QF reward, so other programs should work, although maybe not VA.

The ticket stock doesn't matter, nor does commercial vs award. When you do a manual through-check, you don't actually enter the ticket number. It's just name and flight details. The system then sends a query to that airline and the airline responds yes or no.

Sure, that’s why I said it’s always possible.

Whether it’s policy is another matter.

Wow - I'd have ended up on TV with my reaction to that
When you do a manual through-check,
Whwn i tried to through check at SYD for SYD-MEL-LAX they said unable, then i showed them the printed QF policy. When i asked for someone more senior to assist, that person said the system is disallowing the check through and there was nothing they could do. They were actually very nice about it as they actually tried...
