International phone calls in wifi

I use Skype to call mobiles/landlines in Aus if I'm OS. Have activated own number sending too so clients/friends know it's me calling.

Much cheaper than global roaming (obviously) and I just use an auto top up of my account rather than subscription (my OS trips are too infrequent to justify subscription)

I find skype quality is really dependant on good wifi and often have better results calling from a prepaid 4G sim (using data) than hotel Internet (if it's dodgy).

I also use Skype in Aus when calling clients/suppliers OS.

I find Skype to be best used when calling more expensive places on a Subscription. $5.49 buys a lot of value for 300 minutes.

I have been using Skype since it began
I use a Skype premium subscription, a Skype to Go number for my family to call me when I'm OS, which is a local Landline number in Oz, but gets me anywhere in the world.
And a Skype number (virtual) in the US for US clients to call this also gets me when I'm back home

FWIW I can call Oz mobiles to and no additional charges even though I states land lines only , shhhh

Interesting raleoyoz, have always used payg.
Currently in Malaysia on Celcom Xpax 4G and Skype works great

How much is a premium subscription?

Do the 'Skype to Go' & virtual Skype numbers only come with the premium subscriptions?

Interesting no one has yet suggested Vodafone Red Roaming. I am on a BYO Red month to month plan; $50 per month gets me unlimited calls and text within Australia plus 3Gig of data. It also includes 100 minutes of calls to ANY country (landline and mobile). When overseas in any of the nominated 48 countries I pay $5 per day to get to use my mobile as if I am in Australia (unlimited calls and text within the country as well as unlimited calls and text to and from Australia plus 3Gig of data). You only pay the $5 on the days you actually use the service (I turn data off on the days I don't need it). If traveling outside of those 48 countries, calls come off that 100 minutes per month included in the plan. And this is a month-by-month plan, so one can opt in and out as one sees fit.

i pay $214/ yr for a Premium Unlimited World inc China which i just found out is why i dont pay for any mobile calls in most countries :D. if you dont need mobiles in Australia (and lots of other Countries) then it is $99/year

I'm on my way back home at the moment to investigate this as I'm sick of cough Viber/Skype due to satellite connections with the internet options. Will the Voda option work with any mobile service .... ie Digicell or B mobile in PNG?

What cough are you speaking of?

The Voda thingie is not an add-on to your existing service. You port your number to Voda and you get the service (I am on BYO Red $50 plan). But as it is a month-by-month plan, you can port your number back to whoever you want whenever you want.

Dropouts and unintelligible distortions with Skype and Viber due to poor internet.

i think that is more about the quality of your internet connection than an issue with Skype/Viber.

Not sure Vodafone internet connection would be good enough anywhere in the world IME.

That is what swanning_it said as well; you need good internet connection for decent-quality Skype/Viber/etc.

Vodafone internet connection has been excellent for me in Australia, and pretty good in Europe and the US.

You obviously do not live in Gippsland where Vodafail is useless :!:

Very true; I am a city-sleeker through and through... Voda has been great for me in Melbourne and in Canberra. I guess I must also qualify my earlier statement: by Europe, I meant Germany, and by the US, I meant California and Nevada.

Just to be clear here, I'm not bagging Skype or Viber...I use both and think they are both very valuable communication tools to help keep OS call costs reasonable. I'm just pointing out that both clearly have an Achilles heel, that being the quality of the internet connection and neither work well with private satellite internet.

On your second point, why not? Surely that would depend on the network the handset is connected to, wouldn't it? Here in Oz may be a different story (I don't know as I haven't used Voda for about 10 years and it was marginal back then), but take it OS and it's a different story I would think.
