International Upgrades - the pecking order

Re: Disc Econ or Econ to Business Upgrade

Points upgrades are generally done in a central facility somewhere, not at the airport so it really does not matter how you are dressed.

Haha I wasn't referring to dress code, more along the lines of the a PS who puts in 6 months in advance should get the upgrade over another PS who puts their request in two weeks before the flight, where a WP who puts a request in a week before the flight will get preference over both.

From what I'm reading as well the fare class DOES? make a difference in terms of who is considered first. If there are two PS going for an upgrade and only one seat available to them, the person who has a flexi fare will get preference over a person on a red-e-deal fare regardless of who booked first, assuming both fares are upgradable.

AFAIK, fare class had a direct effect a few years ago - see this link: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....rades-the-pecking-order-14811.html#post194536

(I've quoted that post below)

These days I am fairly confident a passenger's PCV comes into play, in which case Fare class does have a role, but maybe not as significant as back at the time of MelUser's post four years ago.

For more on PCV, see here:

All in all, as posted by yohy?!, it would probably be cheaper to book into Premium Economy class than "Full" Y.

This is not what I meant. Time of being a QFF member ONLY is of relevance if while working through the status category and down the fare buckets ie W,T,Y,B etc etc down to lowest upgradeable fare class, there is a tie - For example:

Lets say the computer works through all the Chairmans Lounge upgrade requesters down the fare buckets and then repeats this for the Plats and then in turn for the Golds. Then it starts on the Silvers.

Lets say there is one silver member with a premium economy seat in "T" class - he/she gets an upgrade to J and there is 1 business upgrade seat left. Then for arguments sake the next 2 silver upgrade requests are at the "B" economy bucket. However, there happen to be 2 separate passengers, both in "B" economy seat buckets and both seeking an upgrade to business.

So there are 2 silver members both with "B" class economy seats and only 1 upgradeable seat left - in this instance the upgrade will go to the silver member with the lower QFF number (as they joined before the member with the higher QFF number).

To reiterate, time of joining only becomes relevant if there is a tie at a status level on the same fare bucket. If there is no "tie", time of joining never becomes an issue.

Re: Disc Econ or Econ to Business Upgrade

Ok that makes sense. I think I'll go for the flexible online economy fare, make sure it is upgradable and just see how I go I guess. Thanks for the feedback!

A9? - good chance of a points upgrade if requested.

Is there any I availability in business?

Upgrade request pecking order

Hi all,

I did a quick search and could not find answer, so please provide link to "shut me down"

could someone tell me if a Plat makes a request for QF silver , who are on the same flight, but a different booking, will the upgrade order be treated as the Silver requesting or the Plat ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Upgrade request pecking order

Silver - the perk you are referring to is a WP1 perk, not WP.

Re: Upgrade request pecking order

Isn't it only P1 who get to bestow their worthiness on others?

Re: Upgrade request pecking order

Most airlines are moving to a system where your status has zero factor in the upgrade process, but rather, your value to the airline as a whole over the past 12 months.
Therefore in some circumstances, it's possible for a Silver to be upgraded before a Platinum One.

Qantas is not transparent about their upgrade lottery. In fact, one could argue it's borderline gambling.

Re: Upgrade request pecking order

My understanding an experience is if a separate booking (PNR) then each treated on their own merit. If the same booking, treated as one request at the higher of the two levels.

Qantas FF T&C's basically state that those bookings with the higher "status" will be assessed first.

What is opaque is what is used to differentiate between bookings within the same status level.

With separate bookings and P1 not involved, all SG bookings will be assessed before any of PS (and after any WP).

Hi there

First post - apologies if I am not following etiquette or protocol. I have looked on this website and on google but cannot find the answer.

I have a query about upgrading my SYD-LAX-JFK flights in May.

I am flying Qantas Premium Economy (It is a discount premium economy ticket and I believe the fare class is T)

I have already requested an upgrade to business on the Qantas website which costs 66/- per person if successful.

I am a bronze member with only 10 status credit points and I have a qantas club membership (really cheap deal through work as I will be flying a lot more this year). My partner is also a bronze member with no status credits and no qantas club membership.

From what I have read the pecking order for international upgrade requests are

(1) Platinum One

(2) Platinum

(3) Gold

(4) Silver

(5) Bronze

I understand that I have lowly status and SYD to LA/NYK is a very busy route at a busy time of year. But I have one question please.

Where do I as a bronze member with a discount premium economy ticket and qantas club membership sit in the pecking order?

I understand I would obviously be below a silver member.

But the question is, am I above a bronze member who has a fully flexible economy ticket?

Thanks

You missed CL as number 1, then bump the other levels down 1.

An upgrade from Y+ to J should take priority over a Y to J request.
But where in the status order does Y+ take priority over Y upgrade?

Okay thanks.

Just to confirm you are saying my discount premium economy fare trumps a fully flexible economy fare even if that passenger has a higher status than me?

Unfortuantely not. The full list (status-wise) is:

(1) CL
(2) Platinum One
(3) Platinum
(4) Gold
(5) Silver + QC
(6) Silver
(7) Bronze + QC
(8) Bronze

Upgrades are evaluated in this order first. Within each "status", it's your fare class, as well as that date you requested the upgrade are then taken into consideration.

That certainly used to be the case in relation to fare class but there have been anecdotes that have contradicted this and have led me to believe something like PCV coming into it.

Since Qantas keep this commercial in confidence most is conjecture. The only thing published is the status criteria.

as well as that date you requested the upgrade are then taken into consideration.

The date has nothing to do with it unless you requested an upgrade after the system has already started processing them.

From what I've heard the top 3 are:

1: CLP1 (there's a seperate category for these ppl!)
