Hi all,

I note that many forumites recently have been offered to upgrade O (ie discounted economy not normally eligible to upgrade) to J using points.

My questions are:

* how long before your scheduled departure were you offered (a week prior, days ,a month out)?
* was this in your case an emailed offer or by phone?
*if you gained an offer was is your status (ie WP, NB...QC Member etc)?

I would also be interested if you have flown recently tio the USA on an O ticket and where not offered to upgrade with points (assuming that you had a points balance large enough to do so).

I note that earlier in this year every QFF member was sent a group email witha general offer on this. I am talking rather of the individual offers after this and in particular to thios forumites who have flown over the last month or are about to fly.

My Details.

  • I am flying MEL to JFK via LAX..and would be keen to upgrade the MEL to LAx legs.
  • Departure is Oct 31
  • Travelling as a party ogf two. Both are QC NB.
  • J, PE and Y Cabins all currently have many empty seats and J is only lightly booked, thougha number of seats are blocked out.
Thanks.

As a WP, back in early March, two days before my Flight I was given the opportunity to spend 72K for a confirmed upgrade to Business class from O Class.

SG here and was called 2 days prior to departure offering points or cash upgrade (BNE-LAX 28th August 2009).

Was originally offered 72k for a J seat (O class booking) however after some negotiating (as I already had a Y+ seat allocated (with Y service)) and knowing that Y was totally full or overbooked, got a J seat with J service for 45k.

As it turned out, there were only 3 empty seats on the entire plane when the doors closed at BNE.

Normally I would have been more than happy in the Y+ seat with no additional point or cash outlay, however, I was only going to be away for 3 days returning from SFO on the Monday (left BNE Friday) so the added security of knowing I was in a J seat was worth the 45k points... plus the fare was just over $900 return, so overall a very good outcome IMO

I was offered an upgrade to business from an O class airfare JFK - SYD

USD 1000
or 96000 points

Qantas called my mobile in the US about 2 days before departure

Business was 1/3 full from JFK - LAX then Full to Sydney

Im Platinum by the way

So it would probably follow that a $$ upgrade from MEL-LAX would be sub-$1000. Sounds like excellent value to me! I hope I get one of those phone calls...

Not sure what they would charge you but for me USD 1000 was very good value because I got the points and the status credits too - This, on top of an op-up (upgrade) to business on the way over to NY and it makes for a very inexpensive SYD-JFK -SYD Business Class trip.

So this would count as a paid change in booking class - at a heavily reduced rate? The Op-Up was a bonus?
Is it true that QF (is more likely to) op up those who have taken a points or paid upgrade on one leg of their itinerary: SYD-LAX-JFK being the prime example. Probably just random pot luck....
It seems from reading that alot of flyers have had this happen. Lucky them!
Bargain...

As a matter of interest, what was the $$ figure quoted?

AU$500 but this was for an upgrade only, not a change of the fare basis (still credited Discount Y points and SC's)

I'm flying BNE > JFK via LAX on 13 October.... I'm sitting in row 35 but it seems they're going to be using a 2-class config that day...

I hope they contact me for a cash upgrade!!! O class for me too :(

For those of you who've had the call, does the price only give you an upgrade on a particular leg or is it a return journey thing?

Cheers

Thanks for the replies.

It sounds like is very mucha last minute thing then.

I had better make sure that my mobile is well charged two days prior......and that I leave it on at all times...

My upgrade offer was for one sector only, nothing mentioned or offered in regards to return SFO-SYD flight

I'm on QF11 on 13/10 also on an O class fare, and really hoping I get a phone call for one of these upgrades - I am Gold and DH is Silver. The plane seems very empty at the moment so am quietly confident - I was even going to call them to let them know that I am interested, but don't want to be blacklisted so will take my chances for a phone call I think. Fingers crossed.

At that price point it's a no-questions-asked purchase - points and SCs be damned! hehe

I'm looking on seatcounter for my flight on 13/10 - QF15 BNE>LAX and its showing every class as having 9 seats available....

does this mean the flight is completely empty ?

No, it means the airline is willing to sell at least 9 tickets in any fare bucket. Any interpretation beyond that is speculation.

I've booked a Premium Econ SYD/LAX forFriday 16th Oct and return SFO/SYD on 24th October. I noticed on the website yesterday that the allocated seats are in J on both sectors. I almost hyper-ventilated. BTW - am platinum. Three weeks is a long time to hold your breath and keep the fingers crossed.
