I have been lead to believe that the iPhone 4S sold in Canada is unlocked.

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions to purchasing one there? I don't want to jail break it, I just don't want to pay a stupid amount for it either.

Pricing is sketchy. But what I can confirm from apple's .au and .ca site is the 16GB iPhone 4S will be AU$799 from the .au site and only AU$641 from the .ca site. That is quite a saving!

I plan to be there in December.

Wait and see I guess. Buying one should be no problems, as if something breaks, a trip to the AU Apple Stores should be fine.

I believe Apple US are also starting to sell iPhones unlocked outright now as well.

Apple AU store is also preordering for delivery on 14 October at the moment - I know that isn't what you are seeking but just an FYI. Seems like the subdued launch and loss of Steve Jobs might impact the overwhelming demand.

An AT&T unlocked phone will work fine in Telstra. (They use the same band)

Other networks here or there, check frequency carefully.

Should work yes. iPhones that are unlocked will work on any network that supports GSM 800/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100. It also supports CDMA EVDO 800/1900, but you'd need to have purchased the phone from a CDMA provider for it to work (CDMA typically makes no use of a SIM, instead using a serial in the device to lock it to a network).

If you ever want to know about a mobile, a good site is GSMArena.com - GSM phone reviews, news, opinions, votes, manuals and more..., a very useful reference :)

drewbles does that hold true for the 4S as it is a world phone and if you buy from Apple directly you only get one phone.

According the the press releases. The CDMA radio is disabled on all 4s iPhones unless it is sold by a CDMA provider. Ie A GSM user can not roam onto a CDMA network. A slight disappointment for me.

That would make sense. CDMA is not nearly as flexible as GSM is (There's a reason GSM was implemented; to make it a Global System for Mobiles (GSM)).

Even more interesting is the chipset in the iPhone 4 (and i'll assume 4S) actually supports 1700mHz as well, but it's disabled. The iPhone 4 has a penta-band capable chipset. Apple crippled it for whatever reason.

Commercial reason? With out looking at what carriers (in the US??) use that frequency. Maybe it was part of the AT&T deal?

All iPhone 4's are quad band UMTS, will work on nextG (UMTS850), Optus Open Network(UMTS2100/900) and Voda's hodgepodge of 850, 900 and 2100mhz towers.

It can often be cheaper to get iPhones through carriers and all australian networks unlock them for free I think.

Telco's do 'subsidise' phones when you sign up to a contract, however (at least Telstra) charge to unlock phones. About $70 I think.

Sorry, but that's not the case with Telstra.

Telstra unlocked 2 for me. No charge. I wasn't even the account holder for one. It was 2nd hand and I knew it was locked to Telstra. No issue. No charge.

Business Rules - iPhone Unlocking

From 12 October 2010, if a customer wants to unlock their iPhone purchased from Telstra, an Unlocking Fee will no longer apply.
Important

The unlocking process remains the same:

  • The customer calls Telstra FOH on 125 111
  • The call will be transferred to the iPhone Unlocking Call Centre to unlock the handset (hours of operation 7.30am to 6.30pmEST)

Its free. The process is still a PITA

Ok, so Telstra's policy was obviously changed 12 months ago.

Prior to that (including when I needed mine unlocked in August last year, there was a fee payable.
