iPhone 4S from CA?

I would recommend against getting an iPhone in the UK. It's more expensive than buying them from the Apple stores here (UK is known for being one of their most expensive markets). They're £499 for the entry level one, which is $777.

Is that factoring recovering the VAT on exit from the UK?

It is also worth considering the impact of having a phone on a plan vs byo phone... I haven't done the sums in that myself yet.

I get £499*(5/6) = £415/0.63 = $660. Hopefully that's the correct way to do the VAT. Is it a full VAT refund or is there a handling fee?

As for outright versus a plan. I think outright will cost more :?: Assuming I recontract my current plan the monthly fee will be the same, call rates the same and I'll have to pay a small co-payment (~$100 to $200). That co-payment is the extra cost versus $660 (UK) to $729 (Oz price ex GST). At least that is my assessment, have I missed something?

With re-contracting I risk losing my free "family" calls currently running at about $600 per month. Overall I think outright is best.

BTW I checked iPad prices and Australia is better ex GST.

Having just seen the queue you need to join in T3 to claim the VAT back, I wouldn't bother. I wouldn't stand in that queue for $40 or so (it would have been an easy 20-30 minute wait in the queue; just like a bank, one teller on duty, and slow as a snail).

Buying phones on plans here in the UK are all locked, and you'll need to have a UK credit history to buy one too.

While I'm thinking the $69 saving is not greater than the benefits of buying in australia before leaving, the price you quoted is an unlocked price. I'm not talking about buying a phone on a plan!

As for the queue, good to know as it is likely I'll be buying a hand bag as well
